Abstract

Provided is a method for producing a solid fuel. The solid fuel is from woody biomass as a starting material, has pulverizability comparable to coal, and thus can be mixed and pulverized with coal to use as a fuel for a pulverized coal-fired boiler, and the generation of dust in molding treatment of solid fuel is reduced to thereby improve the operability. The solid fuel is produced by the method comprising: torrefying a pulverized product of woody biomass having a size of 5 mm or more and 50 mm or less under conditions of an oxygen concentration of 10% or less and a material temperature of 250 to 350C; pulverizing the torrefied product obtained to a size of 10 mm or less; adding tapioca starch in an amount of 0.2 to 10 mass% to the resulting torrefied product; and making the resultant into a molded product having a bulk density of 500 kg/m or more (as measured in accordance with JIS K 2151, 6. "Test Method for Bulk Density").
