Abstract

The present invention discloses a storage system comprises a grid storage structure (10) having a plurality of container storage columns (13) for a plurality of containers (21, 22) to be stored in vertical stacks; a horizontal rail system (30), located at a top section of the grid storage structure (10), having a plurality of tracks (31, 32) arranged in a grid pattern that includes a plurality of grid spaces (33), each grid space (33) is aligned with a container storage column (13) that is positioned beneath the corresponding grid space (33); and at least one container-handling device (40) operated on the horizontal rail system (30) for lifting and transporting the containers (21, 22) across the grid storage structure (10); characterised in that each container storage column (13) is configured to store two or more stacks of containers (21, 22) in such a way that the two or more stacks of containers (21, 22) substantially occupy a footprint of a single grid space (33).
