Description
Biologisch afbreekbare schuimvormstukken van thermoplastisch zetmeel
De uitvinding heeft betrekking op schuimvormstukken van een thermoplastisch polymeer, in het bijzonder een biopolymeer zoals zetmeel, dat als biologisch afbreekbaar verpakkings- en vulmateriaal kan worden gebruikt.
5 Schuimmaterialen voor eenmalige verpakkings- en vuldoeleinden hebben het imago milieubelastend te zijn. Recycling van dergelijke materialen komt slechts zeer langzaam op gang door de lage dichtheid (en dus hoge transportkosten) van deze materialen. Het gebruik van biologisch afbreekbare schuimmaterialen in deze toepassingen is daarom een zinvol alternatief.
10 In WO 92/02559 wordt een werkwijze voor het extruderen en spuitgieten van thermoplastisch zetmeel beschreven. De aldus verkregen vormstukken hebben een hoge dichtheid, nl. meer dan 1000 kg/m3, terwijl voor schuimproducten voor verpakkingen o 10-100 kg/m gewenst is, en hoge productiekosten (lange cyclustijden) bij dikwandigc producten.
15 Uit WO 96/07693 is een zetmeelschuim bekend, dat wordt verkregen door extrusie van zetmeel, waarna de verkregen geschuimde halffabrikaten tot platen worden verlijmd. Dit is een arbeidsintensieve methode, die bovendien geen volledige vrijheid in vormgeving biedt.
Volgens WO 95/15894 vervaardigt men dunwandige vormstukken zoals wafels, 20 bekers en dergelijke uit thermoplastisch zetmeel door verhitten van een mengsel van 15-40 gew.% zetmeel, 48-65 gew.% water en ander bestanddelen zoals lossings-middelen en plantaardige vezels op 155-200 °C. Deze werkwijze leent zich niet voor het produceren van dikwandige vormstukken zoals bij voorbeeld gewenst voor verpakkings- en vultoepassingen.
25 Volgens EP-A-707034 verkrijgt men schuimvormstukken uit een mengsel van zetmeel, rubberlatex of polyvinylalcohol, en water, dat eerst wordt geëxtrudeerd, vervolgens wordt gegranuleerd en tenslotte in een mal onder verwarmen tot 150-250°C in de gewenste vorm wordt gebracht. Deze hoge temperaturen zijn, zeker voor dikwandige producten, een nadeel. Daarnaast leidt het toevoeren van thermische energie 30 (warmte) leidt tot niet-homogenc opwarming, wanneer grotere op te schuimen deeltjes (pellets c.d.) worden verwerkt.

Er is derhalve behoefte aan schuimvormstukken die volledig biologisch afbreekbaar zijn en onder milde omstandigheden in elke gewenste vorm kunnen worden gebracht, alsmede aan een werkwijze voor de vervaardiging daarvan.
Gevonden is een werkwijze die aan deze behoefte voldoet waarbij men in een 5 snel, semi-continu proces schuimvormstukken van een biologisch afbreekbaar thermoplastisch polymeer vervaardigt, doordat men het polymeer in aanwezigheid van een stof met een permanente dipool (zoals water of een alcohol) bij verhoogde temperatuur opsmelt en in de vorm van thermoplastische korrels of pellets brengt, de korrels of pellets in een mal brengt en deze opschuimt, welke werkwijze wordt gekenmerkt doordat 10 men de korrels opschuimt door toediening van elektromagnetische stralingsenergie. Deze manier van opschuimen blijkt een snelle homogene manier van opwarming te geven.
Als biologisch afbreekbaar thermoplastisch polymeer komt in het bijzonder thermoplastisch zetmeel (TPS) in aanmerking, d.w.z. opsmeltbaar zetmeel. Het zetmeel is bij voorbeeld afkomstig van aardappelen, erwten, tarwe, rijst, maïs of tapioca, en 15 wordt als zodanig gebruikt of gemengd met andere biologisch afbreekbare polymeren zoals cellulose(derivaten), andere polysachariden zoals guargom, johannesbroodmeel, dragant, pectine, Arabische gom of andere gommen, natuurrubber, polyesters zoals polycaprolacton en polymelkzuur, eiwitten zoals gluten en caseïne. Eiwitten en zetmeel kunnen ook tezamen worden toegevoegd in de vorm van bloem. De andere polymeren 20 kunnen tot 75 gew.% van het mengsel uitmaken. Het thermoplastische zetmeel kan gebaseerd zijn op natief zetmeel ofwel op fysisch of chemisch gemodificeerd zetmeel. Chemisch gemodificeerd zetmeel en zetmeel derivaten omvatten geoxideerd, gecarboxy-methylcerd, gehydroxyalkyleerd en anderszins gederivatiseerd zetmeel.
Aan het zetmeel wordt bij voorkeur een weekmaker zoals een polyol (glycol, 25 diethyleenglycol of een ander alkyleenglycol of polyalkyleenglycol, glycerol, glycerol-monoester, e.d.), citrocnzuurester of ureum toegevoegd, maar water alleen kan ook volstaan. De hoeveelheid water is bij voorkeur 3-35 gew.% ten opzichte van het totaal aan afbreekbaar polymeer. De hoeveelheid extra weekmaker zoals glycerol is hij voorkeur 0-25 gew.%. Verder kan aan het polymeer een emulgator zoals lccithine of 3Q een monoglyceride, een lossingsmiddel zoals een olie (bij voorbeeld ricinusolie), vetzuur of metaalzout daarvan (bijv. calciumstearaat), een natuurlijke vezel zoals vlas of cellulose cn/of een vulstof zoals kalk of krijt worden toegevoegd. Andere mogclijkc *1006079 3 toevoegsels zijn kleurstoffen, conserveermiddelen, en in het bijzonder zwel- of blaasmiddelen zoals natriumbicarbonaat en kiemvormende stoffen zoals talk.
Het polymeer kan in korrel/pelletvorm worden gebracht volgens op zichzelf bekende granulerings- resp. pelletiseringsprocessen, bij voorbeeld door extrusie in een 5 dubbelschroefextruder bij verhoogde temperatuur (60-180°C in het bijzonder 100-150 °C). De grootte van de korrels wordt bepaald door de snelheid van granuleren en eventuele maalstappen na het granuleren. Afhankelijk van de aanwezigheid van andere weekmakers kan het watergehalte tijdens extrusie variëren van 3 tot 35 gew.%. Tijdens deze extrusiestap gaat zetmeel over van een hoog geordende structuur naar een 10 ongeordende, amorfe structuur (destructurering).
De verkregen korrels/pellets kunnen worden geconditioneerd op een voor het proces optimaal vochtgehalte. Afhankelijk van het gehalte aan overige weekmakers varieert het vochtgehalte na conditioneren tussen 4 en 30%, en in het bijzonder tussen 5 en 25 %. Vervolgens worden de korrels/pellets in een matrijs gebracht met de vorm 15 van het uiteindelijk te vervaardigen schuimproduct. Aan de korrels kan een hoeveelheid hechtmiddel (bijvoorbeeld een mengsel van een natief zetmeel en glycerol) worden toegevoegd om de hechting tussen de korrels/pellets tijdens het opschuimen te bevorderen.
Het opschuimen vindt plaats onder gebruikmaking van elektromagnetische 20 straling, in het bijzonder die in het microgolfgebied (frequentie tussen 20 MHz en 10 GHz en in het bijzonder tussen 50 MHz en 5 GHz). Hierbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van de stralingsenergieopname van de stof met de permanente dipool zoals water of glycerol, waarbij deze stof in zeer korte tijd opwarmt en in dampvorm overgaat. Hierbij spelen zich in het geval van water twee processen af: 25 - De afzonderlijke korrels/pellets worden opgeschuimd als gevolg van het verdampen van water of de andere dipool bevattende stof. Voordeel hierbij is dat geen thermische energie van buitenaf behoeft te worden toegevoerd. De exacte kooktemperatuur van de dipolairc stof is afhankelijk van de ter plaatse aanwezige luchtdruk. Eventueel kan het schuimproces worden bevorderd door 30 aanwezigheid van blaasmiddelen.
De losse korrels/pellets worden tegelijkertijd tot een driedimensionaal schuimvormstuk aan elkaar "gelast". Hiervoor is het van belang dat de buiten- »1 0 06 07 9 4 zijde van de korrels smeltbaar is, waarvoor een tenminste gedeeltelijk thermoplastisch gedrag van het polymeer een vereiste is.
Het is van belang gebleken dat het opschuimproces snel, d.w.z. binnen enkele seconden geschiedt. Dit kan worden bewerkstelligd door een microgolfbron met hoog 5 vermogen (tot bij voorbeeld 50 kW) te gebruiken of door een combinatie van microgolf-generator en matrijs te gebruiken waarin de druk snel kan worden gevarieerd.
Nadat het polymeer aldus in de gewenste schuimvorm is gebracht, wordt de matrijs geopend en het product uitgenomen.
De met de werkwijze volgens de uitvinding verkregen schuimproducten kunnen 10 elke gewenste vorm hebben. Een belangrijke toepassing is die als verpakkingsmiddel, bijvoorbeeld voor kwetsbare apparaten, glaswerk, poststukken, c.d. Ook kan het schuimproduct de vorm hebben van bolletjes, schijfjes e.d., die als vulmiddel in verpakkingen kunnen worden gebruikt. De dichtheid van het verkregen product ligt in het algemeen tussen 5 en 200 kg/m , in het bijzonder tussen 10 en 100 kg/m . Verdere 15 voordelen van dit geschuimde materiaal zijn het van nature antistatische gedrag, het feit dat er in water oplosbare varianten mogelijk zijn en de biologische afbreekbaarheid en composteerbaarheid.
Voorbeeld
Een mengsel van 100 gew.dclcn droog maïszetmeel (75% naticf zetmeel, 25% 20 gemodificeerd maïszetmeel), 3 gew.dclcn lecithine en 12 gew.dclcn kalk wordt in een tegendraaiende dubbelschroefextruder bij 140°C na toevoeging van water tot een totaal vochtgehalte van 30 gew.% geëxtrudeerd. De daarbij verkregen korrels (doorsnede 2 mm) worden in een conditioneerstap op een vochtgehalte van 15-16 gew.% gebracht. De korrels worden met een hoeveelheid van 10 gew.% (ten opzichte van de korrels) van 25 een 50/50-mengsel van naticf zetmeel en glycerol in een matrijs gebracht. De matrijs wordt in een microgolfoven met een frequentie van 2,45 GHz gebracht. Na 30 seconden bestraling is een met de matrijs overeenkomend schuimproduct verkregen dat vervolgens wordt uitgenomen.

Claims (9)
1. Werkwijze voor het vervaardigen van schuimvormstukken van een biologisch afbreekbaar thermoplastisch polymeer, waarbij men het polymeer in aanwezigheid van een stof met een permanente dipool bij verhoogde temperatuur opsmelt en in de vorm 5 van thermoplastische korrels/pellets brengt, de korrels/pellets in een mal brengt en deze opschuimt, met het kenmerk dat de korrels/pellets een weekmaker en/of een hechtmiddel bevatten en men de korrels/pellets in één stap tot een driedimensionaal product opschuimt door toediening van elektromagnetische stralingsenergie.
2. Werkwijze volgens conclusie 1, waarbij het thermoplastische polymeer zetmeel, 10 eventueel gecombineerd met een natuurrubber, polyester, ander polysacharide of eiwit, is.
3. Werkwijze volgens conclusie 1 of 2, waarbij de elektromagnetische straling een frequentie tussen 20 MHz en 10 GHz heeft.
4. Werkwijze volgens een der conclusies 1-3, waarbij men het polymeer door 15 extrusie in de vorm van de korrels/pellets brengt.
5. Werkwijze volgens een der conclusies 1-4, waarbij de korrels/pellets vlak voor het opschuimen 5-25 gew.% water bevatten.
6. Werkwijze volgens een der conclusies 1-5, waarbij de korrels/pellets tevens een blaasmiddel zoals een bicarbonaat bevatten.
7. Werkwijze volgens een der conclusies 1 -6, waarbij de korrels/pellets tevens een weekmaker zoals glycerol of ureum bevatten.
8. Werkwijze volgens een der conclusies 1 -7, waarbij de stof met een permanente dipool water omvat.
