Abstract

Modified cellulose fibres having increased absorbency are obtd. by saturating cellulose pulp fibres (esp. wood pulp) with aqs. phosphorylating soln. (e.g. urea and H2PO4), reacting the pulp at elevated temps. (e.g. 130-195 degrees C) to obtd. phosphorylated fibres, washing in water, converting to salt form with alkali (e.g. NaOH) while the fibres are dispersed in water, mechanically refining the dispersed fibres and drying by removing water in a way that avoids inter-fibre bonding (e.g. by solvent drying or freeze drying). The product fibres when formed into mats are useful in construction of sanitary napkins, catamenial tampons, diapers, surgical sponges, etc.
