Description
Process for the preparation of an ethylenediamine or a heterocyclic nitrogen compound.
The invention relates to a new method for the production of both new and known chemical compounds, which can be used as industrial chemicals and finer chemicals in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. More particularly, the invention relates to a method for reductive aminolysis, which can also be described as simultaneous hydration and aminolysis, whereby oxygen-containing organic compounds such as e.g. hydrocarbons and other polyhydroxy and polyoxygenated compounds are cleaved at some of the carbon-carbon bonds, hydrated and aminated by an efficient single-stage, commercially feasible process using specific conditions, so that new chemical derivatives of the starting materials are provided.
Det er et formål for oppfinnelsen å tilveiebringe en ny, enkelt-trinns prosess for It is an object of the invention to provide a new, single-step process for
å omdanne visse naturlig forekommende oksygenholdige organiske kjemikalier, som er tilgjengelige i rikelige mengder og relativt billige, til nitrogenholdige heterocykliske organiske kjemikalier, som er relativt kostbare og ikke så-lett tilgjengelige som utgangsmaterialene. to convert certain naturally occurring oxygen-containing organic chemicals, which are available in abundant quantities and relatively cheap, into nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic chemicals, which are relatively expensive and not as readily available as the starting materials.
According to the invention, the method for producing an ethylenediamine or a heterocyclic nitrogen compound is characterized in that a polyhydroxy alcohol material is subjected to reductive aminolysis by the simultaneous action of a nitrogen-containing compound and hydrogen gas under pressure in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of from 150 to 300° C., and said hydrogenation catalyst is present in a sufficient amount to provide hydrogen absorption at a rate of at least 1 mole of hydrogen per hour per kilograms of poly-hydroxy alcohol material.
The purpose of the invention will be clear to experts in the field with the help of the following description.
The current technique is familiar with hydrogenolytic processes, which make it possible to simultaneously hydrate certain polyoxygen-containing organic materials, such as e.g. sugars and polyhydroxyalcohols, and also to cleave or split the starting materials at some of the carbon-carbon bonds, whereby hydrogenated derivatives with a lower molecular weight are formed (i.e. the derivatives exhibit a smaller number of carbon atoms). These processes are denoted by the term "hydrogenolysis" and differ from simple hydration in that some of the carbon-carbon bonds are split apart in addition to the hydration itself.
The present invention relates to a one-step process, which simultaneously produces hydration, splitting of part of the carbon-carbon bonds in carbon chains, which contain more than 3 carbon atoms, and amination of the starting material, so that nitrogen-containing derivatives are formed, which previously could not is obtained by the known methods for hydrogenolysis. The method according to the invention also makes it possible to produce compounds which could not be produced in any other way from these starting materials. The method according to the invention shall in the following be referred to as a "reductive aminolysis" process.
Reductive aminolyses are not in themselves a new type of process, a previously known form of such a process is described in British patent no. 449,974 from 22 June 1936, taken out by I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G. In accordance with the method according to this patent, heating a saccharide in the presence of hydrogen and ammonia or an aliphatic amine in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. Not much is said about the relative amounts of amine or ammonia to be used, and in no case is the amount greater than 3.3 moles of ammonia or 2.3 moles of amine for each 100 g of saccharide. Little is mentioned regarding the nature or amount of the hydrogenation catalyst used. In a number of examples, it is proposed to use 10 percent of a nickel catalyst, based on the weight of the saccharide. Nothing is said about the reactivity of the catalyst, which at the time the patent appeared, was less active than the catalysts currently available. In accordance with the method according to the British patent, the products obtained are predominantly alkyl-substituted propylenediamines, where the 3-carbon atom fragment of the propylenediamine is produced from the saccharide. Apart from the fact that an undesired strong boiling occurs, materials with a high molecular weight are often obtained in large quantities. As far as the inventor knows, the method described in the British patent has never been used in practice.
The reductive aminolysis process according to the present invention is carried out by treating polyoxygen-containing organic starting materials with hydrogen under superatmospheric pressure at elevated temperatures in the presence of a sufficient amount of a source of nitrogen including ammonia, an aliphatic primary or secondary amine, etc., as indicated hereinafter, and a sufficient amount of a relatively active hydrogenation catalyst. It should be noted that in the following description, the terms nitrogen and hydrogen will be used, which have now found their way into Norwegian terminology.
With the help of the present method, high yields of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds can be achieved, such as, for example piperazines and derivatives of piperazines, and of ethylenediamine having a 2-carbon atom chain. Only relatively insignificant amounts of unwanted high-boiling high-molecular by-products are obtained.
The method is preferably carried out at a temperature which is capable of producing a splitting of a part of the carbon-carbon bonds under the reaction conditions, such as e.g. between approx. 150 and 300° C and preferably between approx. 180 and 250° C. It is preferable to use a temperature that is as high as possible in practice, without producing an excessively strong degree of unwanted charring or darkening of the reaction components. It has been shown that temperatures higher than 150° C will cause a splitting of the carbon-carbon bonds, but when it is desired to achieve a higher degree of splitting or a faster splitting, it is advantageous to use higher temperatures. Thus, it is preferred to use a temperature within the range of from 180 to 250° C. Temperatures of the order of 300° C usually result in a rapid splitting of the carbon-carbon bonds, but when this temperature is exceeded to a significant extent, undesirable amounts of charring occur and gasification.
The pressure at which the reaction is carried out must be from 50 to 1055 kg/cm2, and pressure between approx. 70 and 350 kg/cm2. These pressures are those that are recorded during the course of the process itself and refer to the pressures obtained at the temperature at which the process is carried out. The pressure at the reaction can be allowed to decrease as the reaction progresses and the hydrogen gas reacts with the starting material. This can be achieved by using a closed system with constant volume, and starting with a pressure of a higher order of magnitude, which is then given the opportunity to decrease as the hydrogen gas which is supplied to the reaction vessel and which produces the majority of the pressure, is consumed during of the reaction. With certain device types and with certain volume sizes of these, the pressure can drop to a degree of approx. 70 kg or more per cm-' during the reductive aminolysis. The drop in pressure is largely dependent on the free space in the reaction vessel above the reacting substances. The larger the free space is in relation to the liquid and the solid starting materials, the lower the drop in pressure will be during the course of the reaction.
Alternatively, additional amounts of hydrogen gas can be introduced during the reaction to replace the gas consumed or absorbed during the process.
The method according to the invention can be carried out batchwise or continuously as desired. When it is desirable to use a continuous working method, a technique with which experts in the field of hydration are familiar can be used. The polyoxygenated organic compounds which can be subjected to the reductive aminolysis process according to the invention include many materials with which the organic chemist is familiar. Many of these materials are naturally occurring agricultural products, which are available in abundant quantities and for which agricultural chemists have long sought commercial use, so that the surplus of these materials can be used satisfactorily. Many of these materials are by-products, for which no industrial application is known, and in some cases there is no satisfactory agricultural, industrial or other application for these materials. Consequently, a greater number of these starting materials can be termed as unwanted by-products. The present method provides means for efficient utilization of these materials, so that highly usable and relatively cheap nitrogen-containing chemical compounds, particularly nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, such as e.g. piperazines.
Among the polyoxygen-containing organic materials which can be subjected to the reductive aminolysis process according to the invention are such materials which can be broadly classified as carbohydrates. Within this classification, polysaccharides include pentosans, such as e.g. arabans (anhydrides of arabinose) and xylans (anhydrides of xylose); hexosans, such as e.g. glucans comprising starch, cellulose, mannans, (anhydrides of mannose), fructans (anhydrides of fructose), polyuronides, such as pectins; di-saccharides and monosaccharides such as natural and synthetic including sucrose, xylose, arabinose, maltose, galactose, lactose, glucose and fructose. The monosaccharides can either fall under the hexose or pentose category as well as those that exhibit other numbers of carbon atoms, and they can also be of the aldose or ketose type. Polyhydroxy derivatives of coal-hydrogen compounds such as e.g. glycerol; glycols such as propylene glycol and ethylene glycol; Glycols with four carbon atoms, including diethylene glycol; aldol; the higher polyhydroxy alcohols, such as erythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, etc. can be used. Mixtures of these materials can also be used in a satisfactory manner. So far, the best results have been achieved using glucose, sucrose and starch as starting material. Sucrose is preferred.
For economic reasons, it is often desirable to use crude and impure forms of the polyoxygenated starting materials as they occur in nature or as they are obtained as by-products from industrial processes. When sucrose or dextrose is the selected starting material for the application of the method according to the invention, such raw and impure forms of these products as corn syrup, hydrol syrup, citrus molasses, beet and cane sugar syrup and invert sugar solutions can thus be used. When starch is chosen as the starting material, impure forms of starch that occur in nature can be used, such as potatoes in finely divided form, finely divided maize and other cereals, as well as some purified starch produced from cereal products. In addition to the above-mentioned materials, many of the naturally occurring forms of cellulose can be used, such as e.g. sugar cane bagasse, bagasse pith, sugar beet pulp, other agricultural waste products, such as corn stalks, corn cobs, straw, oat husks and cottonseed husks, waste products from the cellulose and paper industry, such as e.g. hemicellulose and lignin, and also bark and sawdust from the plywood industry.
It is advantageous to reduce the insoluble starting materials to a finely divided state for use in the method according to the invention. This provides a maximum surface area and consequently enables a fast and efficient reductive aminolysis.
The amount of water that can be present in the reaction mixture can vary widely, from an initial water-free state to more dilute reaction mixtures. The best results are obtained when some water is present. It is preferred that there is present an amount of water equal to the amount of the polyhydroxy starting material and up to three times as much water when the nitrogen source is a low-boiling substance, such as e.g. ammonia or methyl amines.
The ammonia used as a source of nitrogen in the method according to the invention can be in liquid anhydrous form or in the form of reasonably concentrated aqueous solutions. It is assumed that the ammonia can serve as the liquid medium for the reaction mixture. Concentrated aqueous ammonia which is commercially available as a solution with a specific gravity of approx. 0.90 and which contains approx. 26 percent ammonia is satisfactory. Gaseous ammonia can also be used, and in this case the ammonia will be concentrated into liquid form when the reaction mixture is exposed to pressure. The more concentrated aqueous forms of ammonia are preferred. Although ammonia has a critical temperature of 133°C, the presence of water, molten sucrose, hydrogenolysis products including those from a previous hydration process, etc., can serve to maintain a liquid phase under the reaction conditions.
Instead of or in addition to ammonia as a nitrogen source, a primary or secondary amine, and preferably an aliphatic amine, can be used when carrying out the reductive aminolysis according to the invention. Thus, e.g. such alkylamines as methyleneamine, dimethylamine, ethylamine, n-propylamine etc., alkanoamines such as e.g. ethanolamine and propanolamine, and other of the primary or secondary amines, such as e.g. morpholine, and also including polybasic amines such as ethylenediamine, propylenediamine, tetraethylenepentamine, etc. Aral-cylamines, such as e.g. benzylamine, can be used. Cyclic amines can also be used, such as cyclohexylamine, pyrrolidine and piperidine. Aromatic amines can also be used, such as aniline, and substituted aniline, such as N-methyl-aniline, as these materials are usually converted to the corresponding cycloaliphatic amine, which e.g. cyclohexylamine, during the process. In addition, neutral, acidic or basic substances can be used, which will form amines under the conditions of the process, such as e.g. nitriles and amides, such as urea, formamide, acetamide, etc.
It is not necessary that the amine reagents are of particularly high purity, and these can therefore be introduced in the form of industrial by-products. In some cases, it may be appropriate to introduce these reagents as crude mixtures of amines.
The nature of the amine used will naturally have an impact on the nature of the finally obtained nitrogen-containing organic chemicals. When ammonia is used as a source of nitrogen, the products obtained are predominantly piperazine and 2-methylpiperazine. When a primary amine is used, the product is predominantly an N,N'-disubstituted piperazine, where the substituents are the residue of the amine used. A secondary amine primarily produces N,N,N',N'-tetrasubstituted ethylenediamines with the two residues from the secondary amine substituted on each of the nitrogen atoms in the ethylenediamine. An alkanol amine predominantly forms piperrazines. Significant yields of ethylenediamine are also obtained.
In order to achieve the conversion of polyhydroxy compounds so that substantial quantities of piperazine and its substituted derivatives are formed, it is desirable that ammonia is used in an amount of at least approx. 4 mol for every 100 g of the polyhydroxy compound. For substituted ammonia, i.e. primary and secondary aliphatic amines, approx. 3 moles are used. It is preferable to use between approx. 6 and 12 moles of ammonia or amine for every 100 g of the polyhydroxy compound. The maximum amount of ammonia or amine that can be used is not of decisive importance, but considerations of the economy speak against the use of large surpluses.
It is of great importance that the method according to the invention should be carried out in the presence of a sufficient amount of a relatively active hydrogenation catalyst. The hydration catalyst can be of the type familiar to those skilled in the field of hydration, such as e.g. hydrogenation catalyst is made of nickel including Raney nickel, sponge-shaped nickel, nickel catalysts which are placed on a support substrate, such as e.g. nickel on aluminum oxide, nickel
på kiselgur osv. Katalysatorer av krom, on diatomaceous earth etc. Catalysts of chromium,
Videre copper and cobalt in various forms can also be used, such as copper-alumina and copper-chromium oxide. Further
En slik katalysator er Spongy-nikkel som forhand-les av Davison Chemical Corp., som er et merke for Raney-nikkel, eller andre kjente former for Raney-nikkel, som fremstilles ved hjelp av kjente fremgangsmåter fra nikkel-aluminiumlegeringer. can other known hydrogenation catalysts, such as e.g. platinum, rhodium etc. are used, if this should be desired, although these rare metal catalysts are very expensive. So far, the best results have been achieved with nickel catalysts. One such catalyst is Spongy nickel sold by Davison Chemical Corp., which is a brand name for Raney nickel, or other known forms of Raney nickel, which are produced by known methods from nickel-aluminum alloys.
In the event that the raw material has a significant sulfur content (such as, for example, concentrated waste sulphite liquor), this must first be removed to avoid the catalyst being poisoned, or alternatively a catalyst such as molybdenum sulphide can be used, which is not damaged of such compounds.
In order to produce high yields of piperazines, it is important that a sufficient amount of a relatively active hydrogenation catalyst is used. A sufficient amount of the catalyst must be used to provide an initial hydrogen absorption rate of at least 1, and preferably at least 5 gram moles of hydrogen per hour per kilo of the polyhydroxy compound used. Lower hydrogen absorption rates form relatively little piperazines and larger amounts of unwanted higher boiling, high molecular weight materials. The initial hydrogen absorption rate is that which takes place during the initial stages of the reaction. In a closed system with constant volume and with batch operation, the hydrogen absorption rate will decrease significantly during the reaction. Accordingly, it is assumed that the initial hydrogen absorption rate is measured during the first 10 percent of the time required to substantially complete the hydrogen absorption. In continuous mode of operation, the hydrogen absorption rate must be maintained at a level above the lower limit.
The hydrogen absorption rate can be calculated from the pressure drop in a closed system of constant volume or by other means familiar to those skilled in the art.
In general, the reductive aminolysis process according to the present invention is carried out by heating together at "cracking" temperature and under pressure the polyoxygenated compound, ammonia or a primary or secondary amine, hydrogen and the hydrogenation catalyst in an apparatus which is suitable for a pressure reaction. The heating of the reaction mixture is suitably carried out for a period during which a significant drop in pressure can be observed, until the pressure has attained a practically constant value. When a substantially constant pressure is reached, this is a sign that the hydrogen gas has been utilized as a result of the reductive aminolysis, and this therefore shows that the reaction has been completed. The reaction mixture is cooled to essentially room temperature, and the pressure is released. The reaction products are isolated from each other by fractional distillation and initially at atmospheric pressure and then under vacuum as the boiling points of the fractions increase. The composition of the reaction products obtained by the method according to the present invention will depend to some extent on the nature of the polyoxygenated starting material, and further depends on the extent to which ammonia or an amine is used as the nitrogen compound. The particular nature and concentration of the reaction products will also depend to some extent on the temperature and pressure conditions used during the reaction. The higher the temperature and pressure, the lower the average molecular weight of the resulting products will be. If desired, the reaction products and especially the higher-boiling fractions can be recycled to the process to obtain further quantities of the lower-boiling products.
The exact mechanism or principle underlying the reductive aminolysis process according to the invention is not known to us. It is, however, clear that the method combines in a single-step process a splitting at certain of the carbon-carbon bonds in the starting material and a hydration and amination. Possibly in some cases a molecular rearrangement also takes place. The method according to the invention makes it possible to start from polyoxygenated organic compounds and obtain from such compounds substances which predominantly consist of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, and preferably a piperazine, with some of the ethylene diamines. Thus, it is possible to produce nitrogen compounds which do not have any oxygen atoms in the molecule. Such compounds are ethylenediamine, piperazine, 2-methylpiperazine, dimethylpiperazines, tetramethylethylenediamine, 1,2-dimorpholineethane, etc. If the reduction or hydration phase in the method according to the invention is thus carried out to a sufficient extent, all the oxygen atoms will be removed from the polyoxygenated starting material. End products of this kind are extremely useful as chemical intermediates and reagents in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, and are produced by the method according to the invention at relatively low costs. Besides these end products, it is possible to obtain a larger number of other nitrogen compounds, which are also extremely useful.
In order to clarify the invention, it will be described in the following in connection with special examples for carrying out the method.
Unless otherwise stated, quantities of the materials refer to parts by weight.
Eksempel 1: Example 1:
About. 150 g of sucrose, 150 ml of water, 350 g of liquid anhydrous ammonia and 23 g of spongy nickel catalyst (a form of Raney nickel) were charged into a pressure reaction vessel lined with stainless steel and having a capacity of 2.3 liters and with a free room above the level of the liquid reaction mixture of approx. 1.7 litres, and the vessel was equipped with stirring devices. Hydrogen gas was introduced into the reaction vessel until the pressure in the system was approx. 76 kg/cm2 measured at 18° C. Heat was added until the temperature of the reaction mixture was approx. 192° C. At this temperature the pressure first rose to approx. 228 kg/cm2, but by measuring the change of pressure with temperature at lower temperatures, it could be calculated that the pressure would have been 238 kg/cm2 at 203° C, if no reaction had taken place during the time necessary to reach this temperature. Five minutes later the temperature was 203° C, and the pressure had dropped to 229 kg/cm2. The initial hydrogen absorption rate was limited to approx. 32 moles per hour per kilo of sucrose. The temperature was maintained at approx. 200° C and the mixture stirred for approx. % hour, and during this time the pressure gradually decreased, and it finally became almost constant at approx. 169 kg/cm2. The relatively constant pressure showed that the reaction was essentially complete. The reaction product was cooled to room temperature (18° C.), at which point the pressure was 48 kg/cm 2 , and the pressure was released. The suspended nickel catalyst was removed by centrifugation and filtration. The reaction product, after the catalyst had been removed, was then subjected to fractional distillation. Low-boiling products of water were the first fractions of the distillate. The fraction distilling above between 110 and 120°C consisted of 13 g of ethylenediamine, the fraction distilling above between 140 and 167°C consisted of 48 g of a mixture of piperazine, 2-methylpiperazine and dimethylpiperazines, which were separated and identified by using usual analytical methods, and the fraction which distilled above between 167 and 175° C, consisted of 3.0 g of ethanolamine and 2-aminopropanol. The residue (27 g) was distilled over at increasing temperatures and at reduced pressures. These high-boiling fractions can be subjected to further isolation treatment, or advantageously recycled to the process, as will be described in example 6.
In the above example and in the other examples, the initial hydrogen absorption rate was calculated using the following formula: (Volume of the free space above the liquid reaction mixture [1.7] x (calculated pressure at approximate reaction temperature [3385] pressure after a short time interval [2350]) x (factor to convert time interval to hours [12])
1.2 x (temperatur i grader Kelvin) x 1.2 x (temperature in degrees Kelvin) x
(kilo av polyhydroksyalkohol [0.150]) (kilogram of polyhydroxyalcohol [0.150])
Eksempel 2: Example 2:
About. 100 g of corn starch, 50 g of water, 314 g of liquid anhydrous ammonia and 10 g of sponge nickel catalyst were charged into a pressure regulator with a headspace above the liquid reaction mixture of 1.9 liters and which was equipped with stirring devices. Hydrogen gas was introduced into the reactor, after which the pressure in the system was approx. 64 kg/cm2. Heat was added continuously, until the reaction mixture showed a temperature of approx. 246° C. At this temperature the pressure first rose to approx. 221 kg/cm2, but if no reaction had taken place during the time required to reach the temperature of 252°C, it was calculated that the pressure would have been 237 kg/cm2. Five minutes later the temperature was 252° C, and the pressure 225 kg/cm2. This represented an initial hydrogen uptake rate of 12 mol hydrogen per hour per kilo of starch. The temperature was maintained at approx. 240 to 250 °C, and the mixture stirred for six hours. During this time the pressure gradually decreased and finally became constant at approx. 193 kg/cm2 at 242° C. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the pressure was then 38.5 kg/cm2, and the pressure was released. The reaction product was subjected to a fractional distillation in accordance with example 1, starting at atmospheric pressure, and when the higher-boiling fractions were collected, the distillation was continued under vacuum. The different fractions obtained were analyzed and among the important fractions of the distillate, ethylenediamine, piperazine and 2-methylpiperazine were found.
Eksempel 3: Example 3:
The procedure was as described in example 1, but approx. 50 g of bagasse pith, 200 g of liquid ammonia, 270 g of concentrated aqueous ammonia, 310 g of liquid anhydrous ammonia, 30 g of spongy nickel catalyst and hydrogen gas in a pressure reactor with a headspace of 1.9 liters above the liquid reaction mixture, and the reaction was carried out at a temperature of 245° C for approx. 7 hours. The initial pressure inside the reactor when a temperature of 248° C had been reached was 215 kg/cm2 (no reaction had taken place), and five minutes later the pressure was 214 kg/cm2 at 248° C. The initial hydrogen uptake rate was 14 mol hydrogen per kilos of bagasse pith. The final pressure at 245°C was 194 kg/cm 2 . The reaction products turned out to be essentially the same as those obtained in Example 1, and they were isolated in essentially the same way.
Eksempel 4: Example 4:
Det endelige trykk var 100 kg/ cm2 ved 200° C. They proceeded in accordance with the method described in example 1, but only 100 parts of sucrose were used, and by replacing the ammonia with 300 parts of dimethylamine, approx. 58 shares N,N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, and its hydrate as well as small amounts of dimethylethanolamine. In this example, the reaction was carried out for 30 minutes at approx. 200° C with an initial pressure in the system of 160 kg/cm2 at 192° C. If no reaction had taken place during the heating of the reaction mixture to bring it to 202° C, it was calculated that the pressure would have been 168 kg /cm^. Five minutes later the pressure was 150 kg/cm2 at 202° C. The initial hydrogen uptake rate was 41 mol hydrogen per kilo of sucrose. The final pressure was 100 kg/cm2 at 200°C.
Eksempel 5: Example 5:
Det endelige trykk var 196 kg/cm2 ved 244° C. By proceeding in accordance with the procedure described in example 1, but using 227 g of glucose, 227 ml of water, 320 g of liquid anhydrous ammonia and 23 g of spongy nickel and hydrogen gas, essentially the same reaction products were obtained. In this example, the process was carried out in a pressure reaction vessel with a free space of 1.9 liters above the liquid reaction mixture for 3 hours at a temperature of 244° C and with an initial pressure of 214 kg/cm^ at the reaction temperature, and if there had not been found place some reaction during the heating of the reaction mixture to the temperature of 246° C, it could be calculated that the pressure would have been 215 kg/cm^. Five minutes later the pressure was 213 kg/cm2 at 246° C. This represented an initial hydrogen uptake rate of 8.5 mol hydrogen per hour for each kilogram of glucose. The final pressure was 196 kg/cm2 at 244°C.
Eksempel 6: Example 6:
The high-boiling fraction with a boiling point above 175°C obtained by the method of Example 1 was subjected to a repeated reductive aminolysis process according to Example 1 using an equal weight of this material to replace it in this Example used sucrose, and treated for 9 hours at a temperature of 220° C and at an initial pressure of 208 kg/cm<2>. This method thus represented a recycling of this material by the method according to the invention. As a result of this recycling, additional amounts of ethylenediamine, piperazine, 2-methylpiperazine, dimethylpiperazines, ethanolamine and a small amount of 2-amino-propanol were obtained.
Eksempel 7: Example 7:
The procedure was as described in example 1, but approx. 227 parts of sucrose, 609 parts of morpholine and 23 parts of a spongy nickel catalyst, and hydrogen gas was introduced until an initial pressure of approx. 122 kg/cm-' had been achieved, when the reaction vessel and its contents were heated to a temperature of 200° C. It was calculated that if no reaction had taken place, the pressure would have been 126 kg/cm2 at 208° C. Five minutes later the pressure was 116 kg/cm2 at 208° C. The initial hydrogen uptake rate was 19 mol hydrogen per hour per kilo of sucrose. The pressure reaction vessel had a headspace of 1.9 liters above the liquid reaction mixture. After heating and stirring the reaction mixture at 200°C for 1 hour (at which time the final pressure was 56 kg/cm 2 at the reaction temperature), a resulting reaction mixture was obtained, which on vacuum distillation provided a fraction boiling at 140 to 141° C at 9 mm pressure and comprising 242 parts of 1,2-dimorpholineethane.

After heating and stirring the mixture at 178° C for two hours (at which time the final pressure was 65 kg/cm2 at the reaction temperature), there obtained a resulting reaction mixture which, when subjected to distillation at atmospheric pressure, and when the distillate was subjected to removal of water by the addition of solid potassium hydroxide and then redistilled, gave 24 parts of N.N'-dimethylethylenediamine, which boiled at 117-119° C., and 62 parts of N,N'-dimethylpiperazine, which boiled at 128-131° C. The initial hydrogen uptake rate in this example was 18 moles of hydrogen per hour per kilo of sucrose.

If there had no reaction taken place, it was calculated that the pressure would have been 203 kg/cm-' at 203°. Five minutes later the pressure was 183 kg/cm2 at 203° C. The initial hydrogen uptake rate was 43 mol hydrogen per ti-me per kg of sucrose. After heating and stirring the mixture at 200° C. for 1 hour (at which time the pressure was 94 kg/cm 2 at the reaction temperature), a resulting reaction mixture was obtained which, when subjected to distillation at atmospheric pressure, gave 96 parts of a mixture of 2-methylpiperazine, 2,5-dimethylpiperazine and 2,6-dimethylpiperazine, with a boiling point range of from 147-162°C.
