Abstract

The invention relates to a data processing system comprising at least one user unit, a memory unit, a link to at least one, especially external, electronic data base, and a search engine for carrying out data searches in the at least one data base. A plurality of search formulations for the search engine is stored in the form of search modules which form the nodes and edges of a semantic network and which for carrying out a data search can be assembled into search requests having any desired complexity. This distributed storage of search requests allows for the continued development of the network by the search action of the user if corresponding user-interactive processes are used. For automatically creating summaries of text documents using the data processing system provided for in the invention, text documents containing a given search word are detected in the data base and the textual content of each text document detected in this way is compared with search words contained in nodes close to the search node. When the textual contents of a text document coincides with a search word of a nearby node, a data file assigned to the text document is created and an abstract of the node containing the search word is written into said data file to serve as summary of the text document.
