Oppfinnelsen vedrører et kornforfiningsmiddel for støpte aluminium- eller magnesiumprodukter, omfattende partikler som har en gjennomsnittelig partikkelstørrelse på 0,1-30 \ im og som hver er dannet av et agglomerat av korn, hvor hvert korn omfatter et nanokrystall av et overgangsmetallborid eller -karbid av formelen: MeX(I), hvor Me er et overgangsmetall, X er bor eller karbon, a varierer fra 1 -10 og b varierer fra 1 -20. Kornforfiningsmidlet ifølge oppfinnelsen behøver ikke å dannes til en forlegering før den tilføres til den smeltede aluminium eller magnesium som skal støpes.
