Abstract

En celle for elektroutvinning av aluminium omfatter en metallbasert anode (10) som inneholder minst en av nikkel, kobolt og jern, for eksempel en anode som består av en legering som består av 50 til 60 vekt % totalt av nikkel og/eller kobolt, 25 til 40 vekt % jern, 6 til 12 vekt % kopper, 0,5 til 2 vekt % aluminium og/eller niob; og 0,5 til 1,5 vekt % av andre komponenter. Anoden (10) kan ha et påført hematittbasert belegg, og valgfritt et ytre sjikt basert på cerium oksyfluorid. Cellen inneholder en fluoridholdig smeltet elektrolytt (5) ved en temperatur under 940 (C, i hvilken anoden blir nedsenket og som består av: 5 til 14 vekt % oppløst aluminiumoksid, 35 til 45 vekt % aluminiumfluorid, 30 til 45 vekt % natriumfluorid, 5 til 30 vekt % kaliumfluorid, 0 til 5 vekt % kalsiumfluorid, og 0 til 5 vekt % totalt av en eller flere andre komponenter. Et nikkelholdig anodeskaft (14b) kan brukes til å henge opp anoden (10) i elektrolytten, vendt mot en katode (21, 21A, 25) som har en overflate som fuktes av aluminium(20), spesielt en drenert horisontal eller hellende overflate.
