Det beskrives en fremgangsmåte for å generere et akustisk signal for å måle relativ hastighet for et medium, kjennetegnet ved å omfatte én eller flere av de følgende trinn: å generere minst to unike sinusformede signaler, å mikse de minst to sinusformede signalene sammen til ett enkelt akustisk signal, å sende ut de akustiske signalet i mediet, å motta det reflekterte akustiske signalet fra mediet, å separere frekvenskomponentene fra hverandre i det mottatte signalet, å sammenligne henholdsvis hver mottatte komponent med den tilhørende utsendte komponenten for å bestemme den relative hastigheten for mediet. Et system for å utføre fremgangsmåten er også beskrevet.
