Abstract

En grafittelektrode for en elektrotermisk reduksjonsovn hvor aluminium produseres med karbotermisk reduksjon av alumina, gjøres i hovedsaken gassugjennomtrengelig. Grafittelektroden konsumeres under driften av ovnen, og elektrodesøyler forbundne med grafittapper blir kontinuerlig matet inn i ovnen ovenfra. Belegget på elektroden tåler en temperatur på opptil 300°C og mer over en periode på flere timer uten oksidering. Fordi belegget i det minste delvis går inn i ovnsrommet, er det utformet slik at det ikke vil kontaminere den varme smeiten. Det vil si at kjemien til beleggmaterialene er lik ingrediensene i reaksjonen eller at i det minste mengden av fremmedelementer er meget lav. Belegget tilveiebringes slik at det ikke vil øke den elektriske kontaktmotstanden i forbindelsen mellom elektrodesøylene og elektrodeholdeklemmene. Når elektrodeinnløpsarealet er vannkjølt, er belegget ikke-løselig i vann.
