Domenenavnserveren er anordnet for identifisering av et navn i en sesjonsanmodning som en internettadresse relatert til en bestemt tjeneste, og tilordning av nettverkselementnavnet til en bestemt IP-adresse for managementdomenet i et annet nettverk, idet IP-adressen svarer til aksesstedet for tjenesten. Oppfinnelsen muliggjør levering av en tjeneste til flere separat drevne nettverk ved hjelp av ett tjenestesubsystem, hvorved den arbeidsmengden som er nødvendig for etablering og driving av hardware som nødvendig for levering av tjenesten, minimeres.
