A distal end of the tube is brought into alignment or flush with a guide tube string carried by a clamp and the tube is then screwed together with this tube string. The actuator may include options for driving the arm from the vertical orientation to a substantially horizontal orientation and also for attenuating the arm's movement as it moves from its substantially horizontal position or intermediate position and to the vertical orientation as soon as the tube elevator has taken hold. in the new pipe and the elevator holds the pipe so that it can be rotated.
