Description
The present invention relates to a method for increasing the yield of wood pulp from wood chips while maintaining good pulp quality, by pre-treating the wood chips with oxygen before chemical cooking. More particularly, the invention relates to a method for pre-treating wood chips with oxygen under regulated conditions with regard to temperature and pressure for a sufficiently long period of time to increase the utilization of wood pulp in the subsequent chemical cooking.
Chemical boiling of wood chips to remove grease and other compounds and then recover wood pulp can be carried out by chemical boiling, e.g. by the so-called sulphate and sulphite method, which is well known in the paper industry. Although some mechanical processes have a higher pulp yield than chemical pulp cooking, they provide pulp from which paper with relatively poor strength can be produced. This poor strength greatly limits the use of such paper. Chemical boiling is consequently far more widely used.
Sulfittmetod- Of the chemical processes, the so-called kraft process or sulphate process is most preferred, because it gives an acceptable pulp yield at a competitive price, while at the same time such a kraft pulp produces high-quality paper with excellent strength. The biggest disadvantage of the power process is the accompanying air and water pollution problems associated with the sulphur-containing chemicals that are used. sulfite method-
en er langt mindre forurensende enn kraftmetoden, men sulfittmetoden når den utføres slik at man får et masseutbytte som lar seg sammenligne med det man oppnår under kraftprosessen, one is far less polluting than the kraft method, but the sulphite method when it is carried out in such a way that you get a mass yield that can be compared to what is achieved during the kraft process,
gir en masse fra hvilken man bare kan fremstille lavkvalitet-papir med lav styrke. gives a pulp from which only low-quality, low-strength paper can be produced.
As a result, the sulphite process is relatively little used today, compared to the sulphate process. Due to the pollution problems, however, much research has been done to develop and improve the sulphite process, not only with regard to paper quality, but also with regard to yield.
Yields from chemical pulping are far below what is theoretically possible. Usually only approx. 60% of the carbohydrates in the wood end up as pulp during normal commercial cooking. There are consequently very large opportunities for increasing the mass yield by chemical boiling, and especially in the so-called sulphate and sulphite process. That only very small improvements can be of very great economic importance can be illustrated by the fact that by increasing the mass yield from 48 to 50%, it would be possible to save more than 2 million tonnes per year only in the USA. However, it is obvious that one can only accept methods by new methods to increase the pulp yield if these methods also provide high-quality pulp at a competitive price.
Som et middel foråå øke masseutbyttet erAs a means of increasing the mass yield is
E.g. a pretreatment with hydrogen sulphide has been proposed to modify the carbohydrate end units and thereby achieve an increased mass yield. A use that hydrogen sulphide is, however, highly polluting and expensive, and reserving wood chips with hydrogen sulphide has consequently not been particularly used in industry.
Foreliggende oppfinnelse tilveiebringer imidlertid The use of oxygen during the sulphite process is also well known. Although this method avoids the sulfur contamination problem, the process is however inferior to the kraft process or the sulphate process with regard to pulp yield and/or paper quality. However, the present invention provides
Den fremstilte masse inneholder ikke et overskudd av lignin og kan opparbeides til papir med en kvali-tet som lar seg sammenligne med det man oppnår fra ubehandlet tre ved å bruke samme kjemiske kokemetode. a non-polluting, relatively cheap method of increasing the pulp yield from wood by pre-treating the wood chips with oxygen in the absence of sodium hydroxide before the subsequent chemical cooking step, which can be either by sulphite or the sulphate process. The pulp produced does not contain an excess of lignin and can be processed into paper with a quality that can be compared to that obtained from untreated wood by using the same chemical cooking method.
The oxygen pre-treatment according to the present invention can be applied to the wood chips as they are now used in the normal paper industry, and is carried out under regulated conditions with regard to temperature, pressure and treatment time. However, the parameter limit itself is not very narrow, and optimal conditions with regard to treatment can vary according to the natural variation in the wood chips being treated and variations that can be found in the specific treatment equipment and the method used.
Med hensyn til temperatur har man funnetWith regard to temperature, it has been found
70 - 120°C is effective. Significantly lower temperatures are not effective in terms of providing an increased pulp yield, while significantly higher temperatures are undesirable because they thereby increase the chances of greater oxidation of the wood pulp without obtaining corresponding benefits. It should be noted that the present method does not depend on an oxidation of the wood mass, and in reality the consumption of oxygen in the wood chips is so small that it can be difficult to measure. The chemical mechanism by which the oxygen treatment occurs in the wood chips and thereby gives a higher mass yield in the subsequent cooking is not known, and this is not essential for the present invention, the fact that little oxygen is consumed and that the effect is due to an oxidation of the end groups suggests in the cellulose molecules.
Med hensyn til trykk har man funnet detWith regard to pressure, it has been found
best å utføre oksygenforbehandlingen i en trykkreaktor for åbest to carry out the oxygen pretreatment in a pressure reactor in order to
Ettersom temperaturen varierer fra 70 - 120°C provide too high an oxygen pressure, and more importantly, to retain water that may evaporate from the wood chip. Any technique that would lead to excessive dehydration of the wood chips is undesirable. It is of course advantageous for economic reasons to use the lowest pressure that gives the desired effect. It has been found that a total reactor pressure of from f4 - 30 atmospheres is effective. As the temperature varies from 70 - 120°C
0.3 - 2.0 atmospheres and the calculated oxygen partial pressure will vary from approx. 2.0 atmospheres to approx. 29.7 atmospheres. Commercial pure oxygen has been found to be effective. Although the lower limit for the oxygen purity has not been experimentally determined, on the basis of previous experiments at lower temperatures, it can be assumed
En slik gass vil i tillegg til oksygen normalt inneholde inerte gasser så that the low-quality oxygen containing a minimum of approx. 40 volume percent oxygen, and which will be effective. Such a gas will normally contain inert gases in addition to oxygen
som nitrogen og / eller argon.such as nitrogen and/or argon.
With regard to treatment time, i.e. the time the wood chips are kept in oxygen at the selected pressure and the selected temperature, the preferred time is of course the minimum time necessary to achieve the desired effect. It has been found that treatment times from approx. 10 - 60 minutes are effective. It is also assumed that slightly shorter or longer times can be effective.
It has been found advantageous to heat the wood chips to a desired reaction temperature relatively quickly. It has been found that heating times that exceed approx. 2 0 minutes are less effective in increasing mass yield. Warm-up times of less than 10 minutes are not easily available with the processing equipment and methods used per Today. Consequently, it has been found that the preferred heating times are between 10 and 20 minutes. Shorter times can be achieved to be effective with other types of equipment and methods. However, it does not seem clear that very short heating times, e.g. less than 10 minutes, will probably increase the economic competitiveness of the process. It has also been found that the heating step can be carried out in oxygen or in an inert gas, such as nitrogen.
It should be obvious that the present method can be carried out on a commercial scale by using different types of process equipment and method. A method can e.g. include continuously moving the tiles through a reactor where the heating takes place in a first zone, while the tiles in another zone are kept at the aforementioned desirable temperature. The tiles can be moved through the reactor using a screw. The front part of the screw can be equipped with devices for indirect steam heating, so that. the tiles are quickly brought to the desired temperature, while the middle and rear part of the reactor can be equipped with heating devices, so that the tiles are kept at the desired temperature. Oxygen is supplied to the reactor to provide pressure, and a series of pressure valves can be used to feed the chips into and out of the pressure reactor with acceptably low gas losses. The reaction time can be regulated by regulating the speed of rotation of the screw, while temperature and pressure can be measured and regulated by well-known methods. Only a small flow of oxygen will be required, as only very small amounts of oxygen are consumed, and the supply of oxygen will primarily be due to two things: (1) leakage, (2) need to eliminate non-condensable gases.
After the oxygen pretreatment method, the wood chips can be subjected to a chemical boiling, e.g. by a so-called power process or by the sulphite process or the like.
The oxygen pre-treatment according to the present invention can be used to increase the mass yield from both løwed and barwood.
De følgende prøveresultater og eksempler illustrerer oppfinnelsen. The following test results and examples illustrate the invention.
Furufliser, ca 18 mm lange ble tromletPine tiles, approx. 18 mm long, were rolled
10 hours to obtain a uniform water content. The wood chips were then weighed in standard packages of approx.
300 g. 300 g., packed in bags and stored in a refrigerator that had a temperature of 5°C until they were to be used. Storing the wood chips under refrigeration slows down or prevents biological degradation.
Femten prøver av trefliser hvor hver prøve veide ca. 50 g, fra den del som hadde vært tromlet i trommel-valsen i 10 timer, ble veiet og tørket i en ovn ved 105°@ Fifteen samples of wood tiles where each sample weighed approx. 50 g, from the part that had been tumbled in the drum roll for 10 hours, was weighed and dried in an oven at 105°@

Denne fremgangsmåte var nødvendig for å få en meget presis måling av masseutbyttet. in each case the weight of the 50 g sample after oven drying was approx. half of the original weight. The average of these<*>results gave the precise content of solids in whole portions, and was used to calculate the amount of solids in each sample of approx. 300 g of the wood chips, which were then oxygenated and boiled. This procedure was necessary to obtain a very precise measurement of the mass yield.
The oxygen pretreatment of the wood chips was carried out in a 3-liter cylindrical stainless steel reactor. The reactor could be very accurately regulated to a preselected temperature by means of external heating coils, an electronic regulation mechanism and a thermodome which was inserted into the reactor wall. The reactor was also equipped with an additional electric heating rod which entered along the axis of the reactor and which could be used to accelerate the heating of the grid tiles. The power supply to this heating rod could be very precisely set at a preselected level by means of a variable transformer. The reactor was connected to a gas jacket which made it possible to purge the reactor and pressurize it with a gas of the desired composition at the desired pressure. The temperature of the gas inside the reactor was measured by means of a thermocouple inserted into the gas space of the reactor above the level of the wood chips. The cylindrical reactor was mounted horizontally along its axis and shaken to promote heat equalization among the wood chips, with the gas phase in the reactor with the reactor walls and with the aforementioned heating rod. Heat equalization was further facilitated by having spheres of stainless steel inside the reactor together with the wood chips to thereby improve the stirring.
Each of the four "experimental variable" factors defined as indicated below could be precisely controlled to a preselected value.
Tg R k Reaction temperature is the equalized temperature of gas and tiles during the oxygen treatment.

t_ R = den temperatur under hvilken flisene ble eksponert overfor oksygen ved T^ og P^ t_ R = the temperature at which the tiles were exposed to oxygen at T^ and P^
Hver prøve besto av følgende trinn."" CPrinn 1. Each test consisted of the following steps."" CStep 1.
The reactor was preheated to a gas temperature equal to the desired T .
Trinn 2.Step 2.
A sample of wood chips of approx. 300 g 0.1 g, was fed into the reactor. De fuktede fliser ble så lagret under kjøling<*>The tiles were cooled, reweighed to determine moisture loss and any losses were supplemented by adding water. The moistened tiles were then stored under refrigeration<*>
i inntil koking kunne utføres. Dette ble vanligvis utført samme dag. i until boiling could be carried out. This was usually carried out on the same day.
As the tiles typically contained approx. 50% water and only small amounts of purge gas were used in steps 2 and 3, so the water loss was very small, usually less than 20% by weight of the original water content. As excess water was always present, the oxygen treatment could always be carried out in an atmosphere saturated with water vapour. By subtracting the vapor pressure of water at TR from PR, one could easily calculate the partial pressure of the oxygen.
In order to determine the mass yield for each of the pre-treated tiles, these were subjected to sulphite boiling or sulphate boiling in an externally heated reactor with circulating liquid. Control samples of tiles that had not been pretreated with oxygen, but were otherwise identical, were boiled
på nøyaktig samme måte.in exactly the same way.
Kokebetingel ser er angitt nedenfor.Cooking conditions are listed below.
Sulfi ttkoking.Sulfite boiling.
Koking ble utført ved å bruke 0.32 g NaOH pr. g tre-(på basis av faste stoffer), med hensyn til vandig NaOH, 5,62 g av 1,51 molar vandig NaOH The temperature of the reactor was programmed from 20 - 170°C for 1 hour and held at the latter (temperature for 2 hours while the wood chips were boiled. Boiling was carried out using 0.32 g of NaOH per g of wood (on a solids basis) , with respect to aqueous NaOH, 5.62 g of 1.51 molar aqueous NaOH
pr. g tre (på basis av faste stoffer).per g wood (on a solids basis).
Sulfatkoking.Sulfate boiling.
Koking ble utført ved å bruke 0,196 g NaOH pr. g tre (på basis av faste stoffer) 0.082 g~ NagS pr. g tre (på basis av faste stoffer) og totalt 0.222 The temperature for the reactor was programmed from 20 - 170°C for 1 hour and held at the latter temperature in Intime while the chips were cooked. Boiling was carried out using 0.196 g of NaOH per g wood (on solids basis) 0.082 g~ NagS per g three (on a solids basis) and a total of 0.222
This corresponds to a sulphidity of 30 and an active alkali content of 0.28 g NaOH per g three.
After boiling was finished, the mass was quantitatively removed from the reactor, washed with distilled water, partially dried by pressing and then weighed. The water content and permanganate number of the pulp were then determined. For some samples, the content of acid-insoluble lignin was also determined.
The water content of the pulp was measured by weighing two parallel high samples, drying these samples in an oven at 105°C for 18 hours and then weighing the sample again. Knowing the dry weight of the pulp that had been produced in relation to a known dry weight of the wood, the mass yield could easily be obtained by simple calculation.
The permanganate number was determined by TAPPI standard method T2lk m-50, and the content of acid-soluble lignin by TAPPI standard method T222 m-5^. The curve in Figure 1 shows the expected linear relationship between permanganate number and lignin content, and justifies the use of the much easier to measure permanganate number as an indication of lignin content.
Data obtained in said reactor tests are shown in tables I and II. Table I shows a statistical comparison between 7 samples of oxygen-pretreated wood chips and 7 samples of untreated wood chips, all samples being boiled with soda under identical conditions. Great efforts were made to ensure that data from the two sets of samples were very precisely comparable. The average yield from wood chips that had been oxygen pretreated was $51.6, while untreated chips gave a yield of $49.6 This increase is sufficiently large to be of significant commercial importance. The quality of these masses, as indicated by the permanganate numbers, are not significantly different. An oxygen treatment according to the present invention can thus increase the subsequent yield of a sulphite mass without weakening the mass quality.
Eks-periment 15 indikerer at 65°C er for lav temperatur, mens 17 Table II shows individual experiments that indicate the effect of the specific process variables. Experiment 15 indicates that 65°C is too low a temperature, while 17
Experiments 19 - 21 show that a certain range of processing times can result in increased yields. Experiments 22 - 2k indicate that a slow heating is undesirable. Experiments 25 and 26 show that the oxygen pre-treatment increases the subsequent mass yield in the power process, and that the real increase is approximately the same as that obtained for the sulphite method.
Pine chipboard was packed in bags weighing approx. 600 g and stored in a refrigerator at approx. 5°C. Just before use, two 25 g samples were weighed from the bag to determine the water content and the weight of the sample was determined.
Oksygenforbehandling ble utført i et" Oxygen pretreatment was performed in a "
A copper plate for supplying heat surrounded the reactor and was in good contact with the bottom of it, and a water-cooled copper tube was laid around the top. The copper plate was surrounded by an electric band heater which could be supplied with electrical energy by means of a variable transformer. Heating was achieved by supplying a regulated amount of electrical energy for a given period of time.
This energy would quickly penetrate the reactor and heat the tiles causing the temperature to rise to a peak and then fall. A typical time-temperature curve is shown in Figure 2.
During the operation of this reactor, there are large temperature gradients as the reactor is heated and cooled. Water evaporates from the tiles and condenses on the cooled upper wall and then flows down into the lower part of the reactor.
A gas supply pipe made it possible to pressurize the reactor using oxygen and measure the pressure during all experiments. There were thermocouples in the center of the tiles, along the copper surface and on top of the reactor, so that the temperatures could be measured during the experiment.
Tests in this reactor were made based on the following four parameters.
Tj^j = Maksimum temperatur som ble nådd i sentrum Tj^j = Maximum temperature reached in the centre
av flislaget.of the tile layer.
Is equal to the pressure under which the reactor was initially set,
Dette parameter er lik men ikke identisk til den opprinnelige oppvarmingstid i den tidligere reaktor (^jj)*tj^ = The time that was necessary after energy was added to achieve the maximum layer temperature. This parameter is similar but not identical to the original heating time in the previous reactor (^jj)*
Dette parameter t^ = The time during which the center of the wood layer had a temperature of over 70°C. This parameter
er lik, men ikke identisk med reaksjonstiden i forannevnte reaktor (tj^)- is similar, but not identical, to the reaction time in the aforementioned reactor (tj^)-
Hver prøve besto av følgende trinn:Each test consisted of the following steps:
Trinn 1.Step 1.
A sample of approx. 550 g of wood chips were placed in the reactor. The reactor was then closed and after purging of air it was then pressurized with oxygen to the desired value of P-j..
Trinn 2.Step 2.
A voltage sufficient to give the desired TM was applied to the heating element for approx. 8-10 minutes and then switched off. The reactor temperature then passed through a maximum and then cooled to near room temperature. Pressure and temperature were controlled through step 2 and measured as a function of time.
Trinn 3.Step 3.
After the temperature had once again reached close to room temperature, the chips were removed from the reactor, usually approx. 90 min. after they had been introduced into the reactor. The tiles were stored under refrigeration until chemical boiling could be carried out.
In order to determine the mass yield in each sample, the chips were subjected to forced boiling or boiling by the so-called sulfate method, as previously indicated. The temperature of the reactor was set at from 20 - 165°C for 1 hour and then held at the latter temperature for the period indicated in Table III. Boiling was carried out using the amounts of liquid indicated in Table III. All other treatment of the pulp was carried out as in the previous experiments.
Disse data viser ingen signifikante styrkeforskjeller mellom papirer fremstilt fra ubehandlete<*>Data obtained in this static reactor are shown in Table III. These data show that the yield in coking was raised by oxygen pretreatment to approximately the same level as that achieved in the moving reactor. Results of tests on paper made from some of the pulps in Table III are shown in Table IV. These data show no significant differences in strength between papers produced from untreated<*>
og forbehandlete fliser. Følgelig vil en oksygenforbehandling ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelsenkunne øke utbyttet i sulfat- and pre-treated tiles. Consequently, an oxygen pretreatment according to the present invention will be able to increase the yield in sulphate
prosessen uten at man svekker styrkeegenskapene på papir fremstilt fra denne masse. process without weakening the strength properties of paper produced from this pulp.
