Description
The present invention relates to a method for removing dissolved gases, e.g. oxygen, from liquids.
Følgelig må ubehandlet sjøvann behandles, dvs. avluftes, for å fjerne oppløst oksygen deri før vannet injiseres i formasjonen. It has long been known that water can have certain gases dissolved in it which can cause corrosion problems. In the production of hydrocarbons, for example, it is common to inject water into a producing formation while hydrocarbons are removed to maintain production pressure in the formation. At offshore locations, untreated seawater is routinely used for this purpose. As is well known, seawater normally contains dissolved gases, including oxygen, which lead to serious corrosion of the injection system, which can further possibly seal the production formation itself. Consequently, untreated seawater must be treated, i.e. deaerated, to remove dissolved oxygen therein before the water is injected into the formation.
A number of different techniques are known for the removal of dissolved corrosive gases from water. For example, there are chemical deaeration systems where reducing agents are combined with the dissolved corrosive gases to chemically reduce them. Due to the large volume of seawater that must be treated in a routine injection operation, the transport and cost of such chemical deaeration techniques make them unattractive for most offshore applications.
Several mechanical deaeration techniques have been proposed as an effective alternative to chemical deaeration. These include vacuum stripping, thermal stripping and gas stripping, the latter being the most commonly used at offshore locations. In gas stripping, the partial pressure of the dissolved oxygen in the seawater is reduced by replacing the surrounding atmosphere around the water with an oxygen-free gas, for example methane or nitrogen, whereby the oxygen is allowed to come out of solution and is carried away with the stripping gas. The gas stripping systems used successfully at offshore sites normally require less and less expensive equipment compared to both thermal or vacuum deaeration. Furthermore, given a rapid supply of stripping gas, the daily operating costs are lower than with other known deaeration systems.
In the known gas stripping systems for deaeration, however, the stripping gas is always led in countercurrent to the flow of the water being treated. This counterflow usually takes place in a large column that contains column bottoms, filling material, and spray devices which in turn represent significant additions to the construction and make the installation more expensive. A column used in a typical offshore deaeration operation can, for example, have a height of up to 21 m and a diameter of more than 4.3 m.
Due to the size and weight of the column required for counterflow deaeration, the column is usually placed near the outer edge of the production platform and occupies significant space thereon. In many cases, additional deck structures actually protrude from the side of the platform on which the column is mounted. Furthermore, even in still or calm waters, one or more floating cranes with booms up to 49 meters are required to mount one of these columns at its offshore location.
For en mer fullstendig beskrivelse og omtale av motstrøms-kolonner for avlufting vises det til "Recommended Practice-Design and Operation of Stripping Columns for Removal of Oxygen from Water", NACE Standard RP-02-78, National Associa-tion of Corrosion Engineer, Houston, Texas 1978; "Deaeration and its adaption to water flood systems," THE CHEMICAL ENGINEER, Nov. 1984, s. 44-48; "The Forties Field Sea Water Injection System", 0E-77.1.SPE 2.6677.5, Offshore Europe 77 Conference, Aberdeen, Skottland September 1977; og "Desorp-tion of Oxygen from Water using Natural Gas for Counter-current Stripping"; Journal of Petroleum Technology, Mai 1963, fra side 51. For a more complete description and discussion of counter-flow stripping columns, reference is made to "Recommended Practice-Design and Operation of Stripping Columns for Removal of Oxygen from Water", NACE Standard RP-02-78, National Associa-tion of Corrosion Engineer, Houston, Texas 1978; "Deaeration and its adaptation to water flood systems," THE CHEMICAL ENGINEER, Nov. 1984, pp. 44-48; "The Forties Field Sea Water Injection System", 0E-77.1.SPE 2.6677.5, Offshore Europe 77 Conference, Aberdeen, Scotland September 1977; and "Desorp-tion of Oxygen from Water using Natural Gas for Counter-current Stripping"; Journal of Petroleum Technology, May 1963, from page 51.
From the above it appears that while known gas stripping systems for deaeration are generally smaller and not as expensive as other known deaeration systems, they are nevertheless rather large and expensive to construct and install at offshore locations.
The present invention provides a parallel flow gas stripping process which reduces the amount of dissolved gases, e.g. oxygen, in liquids, such as water, to a level comparable to that achieved by known countercurrent stripping processes, but carried out using equipment that is much smaller and easier to assemble.
Mer spesielt angår foreliggende oppfinnelse en fremgangsmåte for fjerning av oppløst gass fra en væske, innbefattende: føring av en strøm av en væske inneholdende en oppløst gass gjennom en statisk blandeanordning; More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for removing dissolved gas from a liquid, including: passing a stream of a liquid containing a dissolved gas through a static mixing device;
injeksjon av en strippingsgass som er inert overfor nevnte væske i nevnte væskestrøm slik at strippingsgassen strømmer parallelt med væskestrømmen gjennom den statiske blandeanordningen for å redusere partialtrykket til den oppløste gass og derved la i det minste en del av den oppløste gassen få anledning til å frigjøres fra oppløsning; injecting a stripping gas which is inert to said liquid into said liquid flow so that the stripping gas flows parallel to the liquid flow through the static mixing device to reduce the partial pressure of the dissolved gas and thereby allow at least part of the dissolved gas to be released from resolution;
føring av nevnte væske fra den statiske blandeanordningen inn i en separeringstank; feeding said liquid from the static mixing device into a separation tank;
la væsken få oppholde seg i separeringstanken for derved å la nevnte gasser skille seg fra væsken; og allowing the liquid to remain in the separation tank to thereby allow said gases to separate from the liquid; and
fjerning av nevnte gasser og nevnte væske fra tanken gjennom separate utløp. removing said gases and said liquid from the tank through separate outlets.
In a modification of the present invention, another step is added to further reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. This involves the connection of another static mixing device and another separation tank to the water outlet of the first separation tank.
In the present parallel flow process, a relatively small static mixing device and separation tank replaces the large stripping column in the previously known counterflow processes. The static mixing device and the separation tank according to the invention are easier and much cheaper to construct and assemble than the previously known columns.
The invention will now be more specifically described with reference to the accompanying drawings where: Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a typical previously known deaeration system that uses a stripping gas that flows in countercurrent to the flow of water being treated; Figure 2 is a schematic view of the parallel flow deaeration system according to the present invention; and Figure 3 is a side view of a modification of the system of Figure 2.
With reference to fig. 1; in the prior art deaeration system shown therein flows water containing a corrosive gas, e.g. oxygen, into a countercurrent column 10 through a water inlet 11 and flows down through bottoms, packing material, and/or spray devices 12 in the column 10. An oxygen-free stripping gas that is inert to water, e.g. natural gas or nitrogen, is supplied through a gas inlet 13 and flows upwards through the column 10 in countercurrent to the downward flowing water flow. As absolutely understood in the art, the stripping gas reduces the partial pressure of the oxygen in the water and thereby allows a significant part of the dissolved gas to come out of solution and is carried by the stripping gas from the column 10 through a gas outlet 14. The water from which most of the dissolved gas now is removed, flows from the column 10 through the water outlet 15. An oxygen scavenger, e.g. uncatalyzed ammonium bisulfite is added to the treated water in column 10 through inlet 16 to further reduce the dissolved oxygen in the water. The process of Figure 1 is well known and for a more detailed description of a typical counterflow column 10 reference is made to "Deaeration and its adaptation to water flood systems", Mangnall, The Chemical Engineer, November 1984, from page 44.
With reference to fig. 2; the parallel flow deaeration system 20 according to the invention is illustrated as it would be used to deaerate seawater at an offshore location. The lifting pump 21 is immersed in a body of water 22 to a depth, e.g. 21 m or more, below which solids and animal matter, such as plankton, are normally present in significant quantities. Untreated seawater is lifted by the pump 21 through the line 23 and chlorinated to combat bacteria, etc., by injecting a chlorinating chemical or by passing the water through an electrochemical chlorination device 24.
The chlorinated water is then passed through one or more filters 25 to reduce the solids in the water. The filtered water then passes to and through static mixing device 26 comprising an elongated housing containing a material which provides a meandering path for water flowing therethrough to form turbulent flow in device 26. The static mixing material may be a permeable granular filler material or the like , but preferably comprises one or more sections of a commercially available, static mixing element assembled by stacking and fastening corrugated sheets to form open, intersecting channels therethrough; e.g. Static Mixing Element, model SMV, which is commercially available from Sulzer Brothers Limited, Winterhur, Switzerland.
An oxygen-free stripping gas that is inert to water, e.g. natural gas (mainly methane) or nitrogen, is injected through the gas inlet line 27 into the water flow in line 23 just upstream of the static mixing material in the housing 26. As the water and gas flow in parallel through the tortuous paths of the static mixing device 26, the stripping gas replaces the atmosphere around the water and thereby reducing the partial pressure of the oxygen dissolved in the water. This causes the dissolved oxygen to come out of solution. The water, the stripping gas and free oxygen then flow from the static mixing device 26 to the separator tank 30 through the water-gas inlet 29. The stripping gas and the free oxygen are only separated under the influence of gravity from the water in the tank 30 and vented through the gas outlet 31. If natural gas is used as stripping gas, the vented gas can be used as fuel gas on board the offshore platform or for similar use, which supplements the efficiency of the venting process.
A chemical oxygen scavenger, for example ammonium bisulphite, is added to the water in the tank 30 through the line 32 to further reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water before the water flows out through the outlet 33 to the injection pump 34 which in turn pumps the deaerated seawater into a producing formation for maintaining the pressure therein.
In order to better understand the advantages achieved by the present parallel-flow deaeration process in relation to the known counter-flow process, a short example will be given in the following which compares the size of the equipment required to treat 238.5 x IO<4> liters of seawater per day containing 8-10 ppm dissolved oxygen.
In the earlier countercurrent process of FIG. 1, column 10 would have an approximate height of 18 m and a diameter of 1.2 m and would include several edge-to-center and center-to-edge flow troughs therein. The column would be constructed of carbon steel with a corrosion resistant liner inside.
In the present method in fig. 2, the static mixing device 26 has a housing with a length of only 2.6 m and an outer diameter of only 15 cm and is filled with commercially available static mixing elements as described above. Stripping gas, for example natural gas, flows parallel to the seawater to the extent of 0.7 Nm<3>/m<3>seawater. The separator tank 30 is 4.6 m and 1.8 m in diameter. The tank 30 serves three functions: to allow separation of the stripping gas and free oxygen from the water; providing a 5 minute residence time for chemical reaction between the remaining dissolved oxygen in the water and the oxygen scavenger; and to ensure that sufficient water is always available for the injection pump 34. Due to the nature of these functions, the tank is made of fiberglass or equivalent material which significantly reduces costs compared to a counterflow column 10 of carbon steel.
The other associated equipment, e.g. pumps, filters, etc., is identical for both processes. The content of dissolved oxygen in the water after initial deaeration in the present parallel flow deaeration is somewhat higher than that in the water deaerated in column 10, e.g. 1000 compared to 50 parts per billion. However, with a slight increase in the oxygen cleaning agent in the present parallel flow deaeration process, the final content of dissolved oxygen in the deaerated water will be substantially similar to that in the previously known process. The significant savings in construction and installation costs achieved through the present invention more than offset any slightly increased operating costs that may occur due to the use of the additional chemicals.
Strippingsgass Injiseres i vannet like oppstrøms for anordningen 26a. 2). Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the process in fig. 2 and includes a further step of parallel flow deaeration which is used when the dissolved oxygen in the water coming out of the outlet 33 in the tank 30 is too high. In fig. 3, the water flows from the tank 30 through another static mixing device 26a which is of the same construction as the static mixing device 26. Stripping gas is injected into the water just upstream of the device 26a. Again, the stripping gas flows in the same direction as the water through the static mixing device 26a and both parts flow into the second separation tank 30a where they are separated. The gas and the free oxygen flow from the tank 30a through the outlet 31a. Additional oxygen cleaning agent can be added through line 32a, if this is desired. The deaerated water flows from the tank 30a through the outlet 33b to the injection pump 34 (fig. 2).
It appears from the above that the present invention provides an efficient gas stripping deaeration process for water that requires much less and less expensive equipment than previously known stripping deaeration processes. The equipment requires less space and is much easier to mount, especially in an offshore installation.
Although the present invention has been described in connection with the deaeration of untreated seawater at an offshore installation, it will be understood that the present parallel flow deaeration method can be used just as well when stripping gases or other volatile substances from other water streams, e.g. treatment of injection water at installations on land, treatment of waste water before discharge, treatment of water for restitution of aquifers, treatment of cooling water, etc. for refinery operations and the like and treatment of acidic water for removal of hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, etc. for oil fields -, refinery and similar operations.
