Description
The present invention relates to a method for removing salts or water-soluble substances from a non-aqueous, water-miscible washing liquid in gas washers.
The use of organic solvents for the removal of unwanted acidic constituents, such as H2S and SO2 as well as CO2 from natural, synthesis and flue gases is known. This method constitutes an important component in keeping the environment clean by the retention of harmful substances from industrial processes. Many such gas cleaning methods are based on the use of solvents derived from glycol - in this context referred to as washing liquids - such as e.g. pure substances or mixtures of polyglycol dialkyl ethers, respectively polyethylene glycol compounds, with 2-12 [CH2-CH2-0] units or corresponding mono- and diether compounds with up to 16 [CH2-CH2-0] units. These washing liquids offer a number of advantages. Consequently, they have a high and often specific dissolving capacity for gases such as H2S, SO2 and CO2, especially in the case of longer-chain compounds only have low vapor pressures and have low viscosities, which also makes them usable in washers or absorption devices. The commission "Reinhaltung der Luft" in the German VDI and DIN regularly reports on the state of the art, the substitutes are to be shown to VDI-Bericht 1034 from March 1993.
In the literature, numerous method variants are mentioned for such washing processes, which generally consist of an absorber step for settling unwanted substances from the gas stream and a desorption or regeneration step for removing substances from the loaded solvent and transferring these in a usable or depositable form. As an example, the "Solinox" process from the German Linde AG for the removal of SO2 can be mentioned.
Other methods utilize chemical reactions for the dissolved gases in the washing liquid, whereby catalytically active substances or oxidizing agents are added. Examples of this are a method according to DOS 2158072, which utilizes a catalytic, in the solvent phase proceeding Claus reaction between H2S and SO2 to sulphur, and a method according to EP-OS 0066306, whereby Fe(III) chelates are used for the oxidation of H2S to sulphur. , with a subsequent oxidation of the formed Fe(II) chelates by atmospheric oxygen.
Further methods also rely on the specific action of certain glycol compounds. Accordingly, methyl isopropyl ethers of ethylene glycols are known to have the advantage of a particularly high dissolution rate for H2S and CO2 for gas scrubbers (DOS 2611613).
Common to all these methods is a circuit management of the washing liquids used, which already takes place almost quantitatively due to economic considerations. This entails a decisive disadvantage. Heavily volatile compounds such as sulphur, hydrocarbons, glycols or inorganic salts are not removed in certain circumstances in the regeneration step and are enriched in the washing liquid. This can have negative consequences for the performance of the absorption device and requires a frequent exchange of the washing liquid. To meet this circumstance, methods have been developed for the removal of sulfur from the washing liquid using carbon disulphide (USP 3915674) or the removal of glycols from dialkyl ether polyglycol washing solutions (USP 4962238) and liquid hydrocarbon polyether solvents (USP 4334102). The enrichment of salts is particularly problematic, as the salts, after the saturation limit has been reached, begin to deposit in the equipment and affect the operation. The origin of such salts is explained e.g. by the introduction in the form of flying dust or from catalyst and buffer additives, but above all by the absorption of trace pollutants such as SO3 and reactions such as the formation of sulphate by S02 oxidation with traces of NOx. An additional effort must therefore often be used to avoid trace gases such as NOx. A typical example of this problem is provided by the method according to DOS 2158072, whereby the plant must be closed for several weeks for cleaning after several months of operation.
The invention was therefore based on the task of providing a method which enables the desalination of the washing liquid in order to thereby avoid the stated disadvantages.
It is known that alkyl ether compounds of polyglycols in the composition, which are used as washing liquids in gas scrubbers, are completely, or at least within a very wide range, compounds which are miscible with water. However, it was surprisingly established that various alkyl ether polyglycols, which were loaded with salts in concentrations close to or above the saturation limit, upon addition of only a little water or moderately concentrated aqueous salt solution at certain temperatures form two liquid phases that can be easily separated. One of the two phases is therefore aqueous and contains a large part of the salts from the washing liquid dissolved. The second phase contains the washing liquid separated from the salts and only small amounts of water. The aqueous phase contains, next to the salts, only small proportions of solvent and is specifically heavier than the non-aqueous. Conventional non-alkylated polyglycols, which have hitherto been predominantly used for gas scrubbers in absorption devices, on the other hand, do not show this property of a phase separation.
The task is therefore solved by a method of the kind mentioned at the outset, which is characterized by adding water to the washing liquid until an aqueous phase separates from the washing liquid and drawing off this aqueous phase.
The object of the invention is therefore a method for removing salts or water-soluble substances from a non-aqueous, water-miscible washing liquid in gas washers, characterized by adding water to the washing liquid until an aqueous phase separates from the washing liquid and drawing off this aqueous phase .
Further embodiments appear from claims 2 to 6. Also some or more of the individual features mentioned in the claims can in themselves constitute separate solutions according to the invention and further features from the embodiments can be combined in any way.
The advantages of the method according to the invention are essentially to be seen in the fact that it bypasses the salinization of washing media by constantly removing salts from such washing processes.
Alkyl ethers particularly suitable for the method are, for example, The polyethylene glycol dimethyl ethers with an average molecular weight between 200 to 700, preferably 250 to 550. Corresponding compounds are sold, e.g. by Hoechst AG (D-65926 Frankfurt am Main) under the trade name "Genosorb".
Because alkylated polyglycol compounds compared to non-alkylated polyglycols with comparable fluid dynamic properties have improved dissolution and absorption properties for the exhaust gases in question, common plants operated with polyethylene glycols can often even with the advantage of a higher degree of efficiency be converted to alkyl ether polyglycols, respectively to the method according to the invention.
The method according to the invention can be used in such a way that the washing liquid carried in the circuit is removed from the process at a suitable place and at a temperature between 20 and 100°C, preferably between 60 and 100°C, particularly preferably between 80 and 100° C, and particularly preferably between 90 and 100°C, is mixed with a suitable amount of water. When the salt content in the washing liquid is not sufficient for a phase separation, it is beneficial to add additional salt. After sedimentation and separation of the phases, the aqueous and organic phase are separated. The organic phase can optionally be returned to the washing process after passing through a drying step to evaporate unwanted water moisture. The aqueous salt solution is sluiced out.
The method according to the invention can be carried out with the entire washing liquid, but preferably with partial streams, e.g. via a bypass current. The method according to the invention can be carried out discontinuously or continuously. For the discontinuous implementation, e.g. a single temperable stirrer, which simultaneously serves as a mixer and as a sedimentation tank. Continuous processes can be operated with Mixer-Settler devices, decanters, or separator centrifuges.
In the following, a possible embodiment of the method is described using the method flow chart indicated in the figure.
An exhaust gas is supplied via a pipeline 1 to a vertically standing gas scrubber 3 in the lower third part and is washed on the way up to exit 4 with a solvent originating from glycol. The solvent is introduced by means of pumps 7, 9 via pipelines 5, 11, 12 into the gas scrubber 3 at the top, and then collects in the lower part of the gas scrubber 3 as a liquid column 2 on a sulfur melt 17, which is to be returned to the initially mentioned Claus- the reaction. From there, it can be supplied in whole or in part via a pump 8 and pipelines 5, 6, 19 to a container 10, where it is then mixed with water via a supply 16. whereupon an aqueous phase 15 is separated, which is enriched with salts, and which is drawn off via an outlet 13. The desalted solvent phase 14 can be drawn off discontinuously or continuously via outlets 20 with the pump 9 and returned to the gas scrubber 3. The sulfur slag 17 can be drawn off via a pipe 18 from the bottom of the gas washer 3.
The following examples serve to further clarify the procedure.
Eksempel 1Example 1
Den nedre fasen (35 g) besto av en konsentrert saltoppløsning av sammensetningen 74 % vann og 26 % salt (9,1 g). 500 g of polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether with an average molecular weight of 500 kg/kmol were mixed with 15 g of sodium chloride and 100 ml of water and dissolved at 90°C. The water was then completely drawn off by means of a water jet vacuum and thus a supersaturation of the solvent with salt was induced. Water was then gradually added and the behavior was observed. After the addition of 105 g of water, a phase separation occurred. The upper and lower phases were separated. The upper phase (545 g) consisted of the polyglycol ether and, in addition to 15% water, contained only 1% NaCl (5.5 g). The lower phase (35 g) consisted of a concentrated salt solution of the composition 74% water and 26% salt (9.1 g).
Sammenligningseksempel 1Comparative example 1
The same experiment as in example 1 was carried out with 500 g of polyethylene glycol with an average molecular weight of 400 kg/kmol instead of the polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether. With the stepwise addition of water, instead of a phase separation after the addition of 65 g of water, a complete solubility was observed. A phase separation did not occur.
Eksempel 2Example 2
Den nedre fasen (68 g) besto av en konsentrert saltoppløsning av sammensetningen 74,5 % vann og 25,5 % salt (17,3 g). 500 g of polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether with an average molecular weight of 500 kg/kmol was mixed with 25 g of sodium chloride and 100 ml of water and dissolved at 90°C. The water was then completely drawn off by means of a water jet vacuum and a supersaturation of the solvent with salt was thus induced. Water was then gradually added and the behavior was observed. After the addition of 125 g of water, a phase separation occurred. The upper and lower phases were separated from each other. The upper phase (570 g) consisted of the polyglycol ether and, in addition to 13% water, contained only 1% NaCl (5.5 g). The lower phase (68 g) consisted of a concentrated salt solution of the composition 74.5% water and 25.5% salt (17.3 g).
Sammenligningseksempel 2Comparative example 2
The same experiment as in example 2 was carried out with 500 g of polyethylene glycol with an average molecular weight of 400 kg/kmol instead of the polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether. In the stepwise addition of water, instead of a phase separation after the addition of 95 g of water, a complete solubility was observed. A phase separation did not occur.
