Abstract
Biologisk vev på et levende individ bestråles med optisk energi ved en bølgelengde og ved et energidissipasjonsnivå som forårsaker at den mengde optisk energi absorberes og omdannes til varme i vevet innen et område avgrenset av en minimumsabsorpsjonsmengde tilstrekkelig til å øke middeltemperaturen i det bestrålte vev til et nivå over basiskroppstemperaturen, men som er mindre enn den absorpsjonsmengde ved hvilken vevet omdannes til et kollagent substans. I henhold til denne metode produseres det en terapeutisk, oppvarmende effekt i det bestrålte vev, men uten at det forårsakes vevskade ved termisk overheting. Metoden med å benytte et lavnivå-reaktivt lasersystem fra 100 til 1000 milliwatt pr. cm2, enten pulset eller kontinuerlig, med optisk energi produsert av en Nd:YAG-laser ved en fundamental bølgelengde på 1064 nanometer er funnet å redusere smerte i mykt vev, å redusere inflammasjon og forbedre helbredelsen av vev ved stimulering av mikrosirkulering uten å underkaste det levende vev noen skadelige termiske effekter. Energidensiteten for det bestrålte vev er begrenset til området fra rundt O, l til rundt 15 joule/cm2. En alternativ mengde gir en optisk energi ved hjelp av en Nd:YLF-laser ved en bølgelengde på 1055 nanometer. Andre lasere kan benyttes som også vil gi optisk energi i et foretrukket område fra rundt 950 til rundt 1200 nanometer ved det ønskede energiområdet.
