Abstract

A pharmaceutical composition for oral administration which comprises a swellable hydrogel matrix and a labile protein contained therein. The hydrogel matrix comprises a crosslinked co-polymer of methacrylic acid and poly(alkylene glycol) monomethacrylate. Also described is a method of administering a therapeutically effective amount of a protein to a non-human vertebrate which comprises orally administering the abovementioned composition. Further described is the use of the abovementioned composition in the preparation of a pharmaceutical composition formulated for oral administration.
