The invention relates to a packaging for use vhen transporting, palletizing, storing, displaying, and selling small, box-shaped articles such as cartons with tubes, said packaging with the box-shaped arti- gles being formed as a substantially right-angled boxe. i i
It is known to pack small, bbx-shaped articles into greater cardboard boxes in connection with transe- port and storing. llowever, the usually used packag- ings make heavy demands on storing space as well as on consumption of material, and they are therefore expensive in use. Ihe prepacked box can be diffi=- cult to unpack and be unsuited for use when presente ing the small, box-shaped articles with a view to sale thereof. Furtherwore, it does not appear imme- ’ diately what the closed box contains nor how said contents should be handled and turned so as to avoid damage thereof during the transport and the storing.
Furtheruore, it is known to puck buall, box~shaped articles into a busket- ov tray-shaped packaging of cardboard or the like material, in which the emall, box-shaped articles are retained by & plastic film such as for instance shrinking plustice. However, this type of packaging does not provide a sufficient protection of the part of the packed articles pro=- oot jecting above the basket, especiunlly the outermost articles being easily subjected to bumps during the handling, the transport, and the storing of such ready packed baskels.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive packaging, which is applicable both for transport, atoring, display, and solling pur- posed, buth at large purchases, i.e. so-called bulk purchases, and within the retail distribution.10 The present invention relates to a packaging for use when transporting palletizing, storing, displaye= : ing, and selling snall, box-shaped articles such as cartbnas with tubes, said packaging with the boxe shaped articles being formed as a substantially ’ right-angled box end furthermore being characterized in that the packaging box only comprises a rsar wall, a bottom, and two side walls, which together with the contents of the small, box-shaped articles are surrounded by a transparent, sheect-shaped material,
In this manner a surprisingly simple solution of the previous problens in connection with existing packe agings is obtained, since the packaging according to the invention reduces the expenses for packing materials, simplifies the manner of pucking in con=-
Lo nection with a continuous assembly production, and halves the demand on th. . spaciousness of the pack=- aging store at the sane time as the packaging is easy to unpack, price-mark, display, and sell irom. ~The packaging is preferably intended for small, oblong, box-shaped articles such as cargons with : “tubed toothpaste. When the width of the packaging is called W, the height thercof ie called Hy, and the length thereof is called L, VW usually corresponds almost to the length of the oblong article, Ill is an integer, preferably 3 to 5 times the height of the articles, and L is an integer, preferably 5 to 20 times the width of the oblong article. Usually, the articles are placed in parallel layers above the bottom surface thereby measuring W multiplied by Le. The dimensions ¥, H, and 1. of the packaging should preferably be chosen such that the packaging may rest reliably on the bottom surface measuring .

The stability on the rear wall is important since the box with the preferably oblong, box-shaped articles possesses the highest capacity of resisting downwardly directed compressive strengths when reste ing on its rear wall in such a manner that the oblong articles are substantially vertically bosttioned and can co-operate in reinforcing the packaging. During the transport and storing, the box should therefore be placed and piled with its rear surface turning downwards in such a manner that the oblong articles are substantially vertically positioned. However, when displaying and selling the articles, the box : may advantageously be placed with its bottom surface turning downwards in such a manner that the oblong articles are horizontally positioned. In this posi- tion, the protecting £i1m can be removed without ime plying that the articles fall out of the packaging.

Figs 1 illustrates a preferred embodivent of a box for a packaging according to the invention. The packaging box 10 only comprises a rear wall 11, a . | f bottom 12, and two partially double side walls 13, 1h.
The packaging box is preferably made of corrugated paper, «Be type Ay B OT 5, but it may also be made of another rigid, bump-absorbing material such as for instance plastics or laminate comprising one or several various materials. ro
For the sake of clarity, the thickness of the mate~- rial is greatly exaggerated ip the drawings. All the end rims of the material, e<8- the corrugated paper, are indicated bY double lines.

Thus no waste appears at the cutting and the processing of the packeginge
Figs. 1 and 2 illustrated that the inner side wall 14 preferably jg an extension of the rear wall ll, and it is therefore culled the rear well panel too.

ee ————————— EE —————————— ees called the bottom panel too. when the height of the packaging almost corresponds to the width thereof , the rear wall panel and the bottom panel are almost square and almost cover each other and consequently reinforce each other agroas the major portion of the side surfaces.
Usually, the width Ww of the box corresponds subs - tantially to the length of the preferably oblong articles. Furthermore, the height Hf, the width W, and the length L of the box may ve such that said box can rest reliably on the rear wall 11 too. Buch a stability is ensured when the width W of the bot= tom 12 is not greater than twice the height H, a8 well as it should not be greater than twice the . length Le. Usually, L is greater than both the - width and the height, L may for instance be 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 550 or 600 mm. The height
H should preferably be greater than or equal to a quarter of the length L in such a manner that the supporting surface, i.e. the rear wall 11, is not disproportionately narrow compared to the length Le. when the box is positioned with its rear wall 11 turning downwards, the narrow, oblong, box=shaped articles ure substantially vertically positioned, -8 = a and through their rigidity they increase the capa- city if the packaging of resisting a downwardly directed pressure, e.g. from other packagings piled thereon. when the box is positioned with its bottom surface 12 turning downwards, it is, however, less resistant © to downwardly directed pressures. In this position, jt is in return well suited for display and sale of the packed articles since said articles are imme- diately visible and since the plastic film may be removed completely or partially without implying that the articles fall out. ’ “ The exact proportion of the height, the width, and . the length of the box depends on the sizes of the - articles to be packed therein, and therefore, the side surfaces 13, 14 usually are not completely square. Therefore either the bottom panel 13 or the rear panel lh are the largest surface, and it is ob~ vious that the most bump=-absorbiug packaging is ob- tained by placing the largest panel outermost.
According to a particular embodiment, the blank may be cut in such a manner that the smallest panel of the panels 13, 1k is sufficiently large to cover the entire side wall, whereas the largest panel be- J)
Lr - 9 = h ing greater than the side wall in the present em= bodiment, is folded to form an addit fonally rein- forced rim by means of an additional folding line 28, cf. Figs. 4 and 5. The large panel 13 may be folded inwards about itself, cf. Fig. 4, and out- wards about itself (not shown) or be folded on the small panel, cf. Fig. ha. Lon when the packaging is to be used, a predetermined number of articles are piled side by side on the bottom of the flat packaging, the rear wall and side surfaces of which are simultaneously folded upwards about the articles. Subsequently, the pack aging and the articles are wound with or surrounded by a transparent, sheet-shaped material 30 auch aa shrinking plastics, cf. Figs 3.
During the transport and the storing, the packaging is advuntageously oriented in such a manner that the oblong articles ure substantially vertically posi- tioned. As a result, the oblong, box-shaped arti- cles co-operate in improving the resistance of the puckaglng againat pressures from above.

Compared to the above embodiments, the packaging co may be additionally simplified by the rear wall 11 and/or the side walls 13, 1h only purtially covering the packed articles, cf. Fig. 7, wherein the side walls are obliquely cut, and Fig. 8, wherein the height h of the rear wall 11 and the side walls 13, 14 are substantially smaller than the height H of the box with the ready pucked articles, These em- bodiments imply an additional saving of material, and the weight of the packaging is additionally re~ duced. Furthermore, the contents of the packaging appear from the side.
The packaging may be opened in one of the sur faces above the bottom or the rear wall, cf. Fige 35, @¢8o by cutting between two layers of articles and sube sequently by removing the plastic layer from the end surfaces of the articles. In this manner the individual articles may be price-marked in an easy vo 11 - oo a.
manner. The entire packaging may subsequently be placed on a sales shelf, and a buyer may easily take one or several articles out of the packaging.
One side surface or end wall may optionally be com= pletely removed by means of a tear-off strip 25, of. Fig. 2, in the rear wall and/or the bottom. ro,

Claims (17)

CLAIMS:
1. A packaging for use when transporting, palletizing, storing, displaying, and selling small, box-shaped articles such as cartons with tubes, said packaging with the box-shaped articles being formed as a substantially right-angled box (10), leery Soy characterized in that the packaging box (10) only comprises a rear wall (11), a bottom (12), and two side walls (13, 14), which together with the contents of the small, box-shaped articles are surrounded by a transparent, sheet-shaped material,

A packaging as claimed in ¢laim 1, cha- racterized by the bottom (12) broader than the height of the rear wall (11), by the outer side walls (13) being connected at folding lines (21, 22) to the bottom (12), and by the inner side walls (1h) be- ing connected to the rear wall (11) through folding lines (21, 22).

11. A cut and scored blank as claimed in ' Claim 11, characterized by the first folding line (26) being substantially parallel to the long sides of the rectangle, and by the two remaining folding lines (21, 22) being substantially parallel to the short sides of the rectangle.

A out and scored blank as claimed in Claim 11, characterized in that the length (Y) of the side panel (14) of the rear wall almost corresponds to the width (Y!') of the bottom (12), and that the bottom panel (13) comprises a folding line (28) located at a distance (X) substantially correspond= ing to the height (X') of the packaging from the two symmetrical folding lines (21, 22).

A method of placing a packaging about small articles such as cartons with tubes, as well as of transporting and storing the same, characterized in that a cut blank according to one of the Claime:: 11-15 at the bottom (12) is provided with a pile of . the small, box-shaped articles, that the rear wall (11) is folded upwards, and the side panels (13, 14) . of the rear wall and the bottom are folded inwards towards the end surfaces, as well as that the folded - packaging with articles ia surrounded by a trans- parent, sheet-shaped material, preferably shrinking plastics (30), whereafter the packaging with the articles are oriented in such a manner during the transport and the storing, that the longest dimen- sion, i.e. the long side of the box-shaped articles, is substantially vertically positioned.
