The new bis-triazole derivatives prepared by the method according to the invention have the general formula I, wherein R represents a phenyl group optionally substituted with 1 or 2 substituents, each of which is independently selected from the group consisting of fluorine and chlorine atoms. The compounds of formula I can be prepared by the method according to the invention in the form of pharmacologically acceptable and agriculturally acceptable salts. Preferred R substituents in formula I include the following groups: 4-fluorophenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 2-chlorophenyl, 2,4-dichlorophenyl, 2,4-difluorophenyl, 2-chloro-4-fluorophenyl, 2-fluoro-4-chlorophenyl and 2,5-difluorophenyl. The most preferred R substituents are 2,4-difluorophenyl, 2,4-dichlorophenyl, 4-fluorophenyl and 4-chlorophenyl. The most preferred compound is the compound of formula 1, wherein R is a 4-chlorophenyl group. According to the process of the invention, compounds of formula 1, wherein R has the meaning given above, are prepared by reacting a compound of general formula 2, wherein X and X1 each represent a leaving group, preferably a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, and R has the meaning given above, either with 1,2,4-triazole, preferably in the presence of a base, e.g. potassium carbonate, or with a salt of 1,2,4-triazole with a base, preferably an alkali metal salt. Preferably, the reaction uses a compound of formula 2, wherein X and X1 have the same meaning, and most preferably when they represent bromine atoms. Typically, the compound of formula 2, 1,2,4-triazole and potassium carbonate are heated together at a temperature of e.g. 40-120°C in a suitable solvent. in dimethylformamide, until the reaction is complete. The product can be isolated and purified in a known manner. The starting compounds of general formula II are obtained in a known manner, for example by the reaction shown in Scheme 1 (synthesis of compound V from compounds 3 and 4). They do not need to be isolated and can be used directly. Pharmacologically acceptable acid addition salts of compounds of formula I are salts formed with strong acids, giving non-toxic acid addition salts with acids such as hydrochloric, hydrobromic, sulfuric, oxalic, and methanesulfonic acids. These salts can be obtained in a known manner, for example by mixing solutions containing approximately equimolar amounts of the free base and the desired acid and filtering off the salt formed if it is insoluble, or by evaporating the solvent. It has been found that the compounds prepared by the process according to the invention have surprisingly good activity against infections caused by the clinically important Aspergillus fungi. The compounds of formula I and their pharmacologically acceptable salts have a fungicidal effect and are useful for combating fungal infections in animals, especially humans. They are, for example, useful for the local treatment of fungal infections in humans caused by, among others, the microorganisms Candida, Tripchophyton, Microosporum or Epidermophytophthora species, or mucosal infections caused by Candida albicans (e.g., vaginal yeast and thrush). They can also be used to treat systemic infections caused by fungi, e.g. Candida albicans, cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Coccidiodes, Paracoccidioides, Histoplasma or Blastomyces. The in vitro evaluation of antifungal activity of compounds can be performed by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the test compound in a suitable medium in which the growth of a specific microorganism is reduced. In practice, a series of agar plates, each containing the test compound at a defined concentration, are inoculated with a standard culture, e.g., Candida albicans, and each plate is then incubated for 48 hours at 37°C. The plates are then examined for the presence or absence of fungal growth and the corresponding m.i.c. value is recorded. Other microorganisms used in such assays may include Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Trichophytonspp., Microsporum spp., Epidermophyton floccosum, Coccidioides immitis, and Torulopsis glabrata. In vivo evaluation of compounds may be carried out at a range of dose levels, injected intraperitoneally or intravenously, or administered orally to mice infected with, e.g., a strain of Candida albicans or Aspergillus flavus. Activity is determined based on the number of surviving mice in groups treated with the test compound after the death of mice in the group that did not receive the test compound. The dose level at which the test compound provides 50% protection against death due to infection (PD50) is recorded. Table 1 gives the PD50 values (by oral administration) of compounds of formula 1 against C. albicans obtained in mice in the previously described assays. Table 1 Example product number I (diastereomeric pair 1) I (diastereomeric pair 2) II (diastereomeric pair 2) PD50 value (mg/kg) 0.1 0.3 0.5 In the assays for activity against systemic aspergillosis in mice, mice were infected with a strain of Aspergillus flavus maintained by Pfizer, injected intravenously into the tail vein. Mice were not treated with the test compound (control group) and usually died 5–10 days after A. flavus infection. Each test compound was administered to a group of infected mice at an oral dose of 20 mg/kg one and four hours after infection, and then twice daily for the next 4 days. The increase in the mean survival time (MST) of mice treated with the test compound was then determined in comparison with a control group of mice infected at the same time with the same strain. The compounds of formula 1 were found to be surprisingly active against an important strain of A. flavus and the results given in Table 2 compare the compounds of formula 6, obtained in Example I, with their analogue containing a -CH2- group (see the description of British patent application No. 2 078 719 A) in comparison with a compound containing a -CHCHa group in the chain. Table 2 Formula 6 R Formula 7 (diastereomer 1 of Example I) Formula 7 R2 CH3 H Increase in MST (days) + 18.6 + 2.4 The compounds of formula 1 and their fungicidal salts can be administered to humans alone, but are usually administered in admixture with a pharmaceutical carrier selected with regard to the intended route of administration and in accordance with standard pharmaceutical practice. For example, they may be administered orally in the form of tablets containing excipients such as starch or lactose, or in the form of capsules or ova, either alone or in admixture with excipients, or in the form of elixirs or suspensions containing flavoring or coloring agents. They may be injected parenterally, e.g., intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously. For parenteral administration, they are best used in the form of sterile, aqueous solutions which may contain other substances, e.g., sufficient salts or glucose to render the solution isotonic with blood. The daily dose of a compound of formula I or a salt thereof administered orally or parenterally to humans is 0.1 to 10 mg/kg (in fractional doses). Thus, tablets and capsules contain from 5 mg to 0.5 g of active ingredient, for single administration or two or three doses simultaneously, depending on the patient's needs. In each case, the physician will determine the current dose most appropriate for the individual patient, which varies depending on the age, weight, and response of each patient. The doses given above are examples for the average case, and there may, of course, be individual cases where higher or lower doses are appropriate. Alternatively, the fungicidal compounds of formula 1 can be administered in the form of suppositories or pessaries, or applied topically in the form of a liquid, solution, cream, ointment, or powder. They may, for example, be incorporated into a cream consisting of an aqueous emulsion of polyethylene glycols or liquid paraffin, or they may be incorporated, at a concentration of 1-10%, into an ointment consisting of white wax or white soft paraffin, together with any stabilizing and preservative agents that may be required. The compounds of formula I and their salts also exhibit activity against various plant disease-causing fungi, including various species of rusts, molds and mildews, and these compounds are therefore useful for treating plants and seeds to combat or prevent such diseases. The in vitro activity of the compounds of formula I against plant disease-causing fungi can be assessed by measuring their minimum inhibitory concentration in the same manner as previously described with this method. the difference being that the plates are incubated at 30°C for 48 hours or longer before testing for the presence or absence of growth. Microorganisms used in such tests include Cochliobolus carbonum, Pyricularis oryzae, Glomerella cinguata, Penicillium digitatum, Botrytis cinerea, and Rhizoctonia solani. In agriculture and horticulture, the compounds of formula 1 and their agriculturally acceptable salts are preferably used in the form of compositions formulated for the particular uses and desired purposes. Thus, the compounds can be used in the form of dusts or granules, seed dressings, aqueous solutions, dispersions or emulsions, disinfectants, sprays, aerosols, or fumes. These compositions may also be in the form of dispersible powders, granules, or grains, or concentrates for dilution before use. Such compositions may also contain conventional carriers, diluents, or adjuvants known and accepted in agriculture and horticulture. Such formulations are prepared in a manner known per se. These compositions may also contain other active ingredients, e.g., herbicidal, insecticidal, or other fungicidal compounds. The compounds and agents can be used in various ways, e.g., they can be applied directly to the leaves, stems, branches, seeds, or roots of plants or to the soil or other growth medium, and can be used not only for disease control but also for preventing fungal attack. The invention is further illustrated in the following examples. Example I. Preparation of 1,3-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazolyl-1)-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-butanol. The course of the subsequent reactions is shown in Scheme 2. Under a nitrogen atmosphere, for 30 minutes, using a double-ended needle, a solution of 1,3-dibromobutanone-2 (9.2 g) (Org. Synthesis, 53, 123), in dry ether (150 ml), at room temperature was added. At -78°C, 4-chlorophenylmagnesium bromide in ether (80 ml) [prepared from 4-chlorobenzene (15.2 g) and magnesium turnings (2.8 g)] was added. After stirring for one hour at -78°C, the resulting mixture was treated with saturated ammonium chloride solution and allowed to reach room temperature. The ether layer was separated, the aqueous layer was extracted with ether (3 x 20 ml), and the combined ether extracts were washed with brine and dried (MgSO4). The residue obtained after removal of the ether was added under nitrogen to a mixture of 1,2,4-triazole (8 g), potassium carbonate (20 g), and dimethylformamide (50 ml) and the mixture was heated overnight at 70°C. The cooled solution was dried, the solid residue was washed with xylene (50 ml), and the combined filtrates were evaporated under reduced pressure. The last traces of dimethylformamide were removed by azeotropic distillation from xylene (2 x 30 ml). The crude residue was partitioned between methylene chloride (200 ml) and water (100 ml), and the methylene chloride extract was washed with water and dried (MgSO4). After removal of the methylene chloride in vacuo, the residue was subjected to flash chromatography on silica (150 g), eluting with methylene chloride containing 8% by volume of methanol. The appropriate fractions (i.e., 29-30, each 50 ml) were combined and evaporated to give 1.1 g of a mixture of diastereomeric pairs. The isomeric pairs were separated by flash chromatography on silica (100 g), eluting with ethyl acetate and dimethylamine:methanol (80:20:2, by volume). Fractions 13-16 (each 25 ml) were combined and evaporated to give the isomeric pair 1 (114 mg), melting at 112-113°C after crystallization from ethyl acetate/hexane. (Mass spectroscopy: m/e 318 (M+); calculated for C^hisClNeO: M+ = 318). After evaporation of fractions 31-49 (also 25 ml each) followed by crystallization from ethyl acetate/hexane, an isomeric pair (246 g) with a melting point of 50-51°C is obtained. (Mass spectrometry results m/e 318 /M+/; calculated for C14H15CIN6O: M+ = 318). Isomeric pair 1. Results N. m. r.
