Description
The subject of the invention is a process for the production of aryl glycolic acid ethers used as herbicides and intermediates in the chemical industry.
A known method of producing glycolic acid ethers, or phenoxyacetic acids, is based on the reaction of phenates with chloroacetic acid in an alkaline medium. While the process of condensation of phenate with chloroacetic acid does not cause problems, the production of chloroacetic acid is associated with the generation of a large amount of waste difficult to utilize, and therefore carrying out this process, especially on a technical scale, is uneconomical.
Another method known from German patent specification No. 2,936,123 for the preparation of aryl glycolic acid ethers consists in the oxidation of 2-aryloxyethanol with oxygen in the presence of modified platinum or palladium catalysts.
This method is very expensive due to the high cost of the catalyst, and moreover, the obtained product is heavily contaminated with metals that are difficult to remove.
Wynalazek dotyczy sposobu wytwarzania arylowych eterów kwasu glikolowego, polegającego na utlenianiu hydroksyetylenowych fenoli w obecności katalizatora. The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aryl glycolic acid ethers which comprises the oxidation of hydroxyethylene phenols in the presence of a catalyst.
The essence of the invention is that 2-aryloxyethyl alcohols are used, which are oxidized with sodium hypochlorite in an aqueous solution containing sodium bicarbonate, potassium bromide, and the catalyst is tetrabutylamine chloride or other quaternary ammonium salt and the radical 2,2,6, 6-tetramethylpiperidinoxy. 2-aryloxyethyl alcohol is used in a stoichiometric amount with respect to the sodium hypochlorite.
Podchloryn sodu uaktywniony katalitycznymi ilościami bromku potasu, rodnikiem 2,2,6,6-tetrametylopiperydynoksylowym i czwartorzędową solą amoniową spełnia rolę utleniacza, a kwaśny węglan sodu utrzymuje odpowiednie pH środowiska. Sodium hypochlorite, activated with catalytic amounts of potassium bromide, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinoxy radical and a quaternary ammonium salt, acts as an oxidant, and sodium bicarbonate maintains the appropriate pH of the environment. During the process, the product may precipitate in the form of a sodium salt or the product remains in solution in the form of a sodium salt. In the first case, the precipitated salt is isolated by filtration, dissolved in water and the corresponding acid is precipitated by the addition of a mineral acid. It is a product separation and purification method. In the second case, when the sodium salt is soluble in the reaction medium, it is preferable to separate the unreacted hydroxyethylate from the medium, e.g. by extraction of the solution with methylene chloride, and then acidification of the separated water phase with mineral acid, which causes the product to be separated from the reaction medium. When used as an oxidant, sodium hypochlorite, in relation to aryloxyethylates, e.g. 2-phenoxyethanol, not only acts as an oxidant but also as a ring chlorinating agent. The effect of this action is the preparation of p-chiorophenoxyacetic acid as the main component in the product.
The advantage of the proposed method is that the oxidation process is carried out in the presence of a system of organic catalysts that has not been used in the art so far, thanks to which the obtained product is free of metallic impurities and the entire process is carried out under mild conditions.

The advantage of this method is also the use of uncomplicated equipment, simplicity of technological operations, work with water solutions and the use of materials accepted by the natural environment.
