Description

PLThe present invention relates to a method for producing a uniformly carved outer layer of a metal wire or strips. The invention consists in first oxidizing and then reducing the metal before exposing it to hydrocarbon gas. * For a better understanding of the invention, a description of the carburizing method is provided below by title of an example. The figure shows a partial front view and partly a sectional view of an apparatus for uniform carburizing of wire or metal strips. The example shown in the figure is provided with a carbonation tube 1, heated from the outside, which can be made e.g. of glass, metal or silica. The tube chamber 1 is provided with a plug 2 at one end and a cover 3 at the other end, both the plug and the cover having an opening through which it can pass through. - carbon wire or strip 4. Adjacent to chamber 1 is a reduction chamber 6, again adjacent to an oxidation chamber 8. The reduction chamber 6 is at each end provided with a cover 7, one of which may be attached to the cover 3 of the chamber 1 and the second to the cover 15 of the oxidation chamber 8. The motor 9 drives a suitable mechanical device which pulls the wire or tape 4 from the drum 10 through the oxidation chambers 8 and reduction chamber 6 and through the carbonizing chamber 1, then May I on the appropriate drum 12. All chambers may be heated by any suitable heaters, eg gas heaters 11, provided with burners IV, located under the chambers. A branch 13 extends from the oxidation chamber 8 by means of which air or another oxidizing gas can be passed through the chamber. The oxidizing gas which could escape through the opening in the cover 15 can be blown back using a suitable inert or reducing gas passed through the tube 14. Branches 16 and 16 ', similar to the above-mentioned, are arranged for passing reducing gas, e.g. hydrogen or natural gas, through chamber 6. A suitable tube 18 'is used to remove the gas passing through the opening in the cover 7, but it is understood that when using hydrocarbons, e.g. natural gas, the said tube may be superfluous, as the presence of such gases in the carburizing chamber is not harmful. When the wire or ribbon passes through the oxidation and reduction chambers, these chambers are usually heated by a suitable apparatus for the purpose of accelerating the oxidation of the wire and then reducing the oxidized surface. It is understood that if a carbon containing gas, such as natural gas, is used as the reducing gas, the temperature of the reducing chamber cannot be raised sufficiently to carve the metal. When the wire or ribbon is passed through the carburizing chamber. ,. this chamber is kept at a temperature of 700 to 1000 ° C by gas burners 11 '; the carburizing chamber may also be heated from the inside or outside by means of electric heaters, or it may be possible to directly heat a carbonized wire or strip by passing an electric current through it as the wire or tape is passed through the chamber. As the wire or ribbon is passed through the chamber and has a predetermined temperature, the wire or ribbon is exposed to a hydrocarbon gas, for example acetylene, mixed with kerosene or gasoline. The gas is forced into the carburizing chamber through the tube 18 'and exits the chamber through the tube 18. After even carburizing, the wire or tape is wound onto the drum 12. As a result of the treatment at such high temperatures, the outer layer of the wire or the metal strip becomes permanently carburized, possibly due to the formation of a metal carbonate or the formation of a solid solution of carbon in the metal. The wire or ribbon is then heated - 2 - in a vacuum, after which you can knead the zen nets or plates. It should be noted that the wire or ribbon is oxidized first and then reduced before passing it through the carburizing chamber. Freshly reduced metal has been found to be more sensitive to carburizing gases than non-oxidized and non-reduced metal. The thickness of the formed carburized metal layer can be controlled by mixing a pair of hydrocarbons with an inert gas such as nitrogen. If an inert gas is mixed with a pair of hydrocarbons, the carbon will not penetrate that deeply into the metal for the same period of time, but an evenly carburized layer is formed, and the carbon oxidizes or fuses with the metal, leaving no significant residue. excess free carbon, which, without coming into contact with nickel, cannot form a solution with it or combine with it. Although theoretically it cannot be conclusively stated that the presence of free hydrogen in hydrocarbon gases has a detrimental effect on the formation of an evenly carbonized layer. however, experience shows the truth of this assumption. It is therefore desirable to use a hydrocarbon gas free of unbound hydrogen, although gases containing some free hydrogen, such as natural gas, have produced very good results. hence the essence of the invention. For example, other inert gases, such as ethylene or ethane, or a mixture of two or more hydrocarbon gases may be used, and other inert gases, such as argon or helium, may also be used instead of nitrogen. Objects made of other metals, such as cobalt or iron, or alloys of these metals, can be nailed in a similar manner. The method according to the invention may also be performed intermittently. For example, the wire or tape may first be oxidized, then reduced, and then placed or passed through a carburizing chamber. PL
