H.S.Weinheim, Germany). Method of manufacturing skins, sausage coatings* Filed on 28 November 1933. Priority: - 78 November i^y*. (HienM^ The subject of the invention is a method for producing artificial intestines from skin, tripe, and similar parts of animal organisms for the production of sausages and similar products. The invention consists in treating the skin with substances that have a swell-forming effect and then mechanically processing it into a fibrous plastic material with a water content of at least 75%, which comes from the swelling process. Afterwards, sleeves are formed from this mass, which provide the necessary resistance to mechanical or other stresses. In order to transform the skin into a fibrous mass, it is suitable for further processing. It is first subjected to the action of chemical substances that cause swelling of the skin, which causes the skin to become red. The starting material used in the process of this invention is primarily untanned hides and skins, optionally subjected to a calcification process. These hides are then additionally treated with reagents that act on them by scorching. Alkaline salts, such as milk of lime, sodium hydroxide, ammonia, or other acids, such as hydrochloric acid, sulfurous acid, formic acid, acetic acid, lactic acid, and other acids, as well as acids such as ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, and other acids, can be used as scorching agents. Swelling with special agents can be achieved in a single-stage or multi-stage process, or using various special agents. The conditions under which the swelling process is performed, i.e., the type of special agents, their concentration, processing time, and temperature, should be selected so as to produce a material with a high degree of swelling, which, after mechanical and fiberizing processing, would produce a fibrous mass similar to pulp with a water content of at least 75%, resulting from the swelling process. It is advantageous to work in such a way that the leather is swollen in such a way that the fibers and fiber bundles are loosened to the greatest extent possible. and as a result, it was possible to achieve fiberization into individual fibers by mechanical processing easily and as damage-free as possible. Leather treated with softening agents is subjected to a special mechanical processing for grinding and fiberization. The grinding and fiberization of leather previously treated with softening agents can be carried out in one operation or gradually in several operations, for example, by treating the leather substance with spiked rollers, shredders or similar machines, and the leather thus broken down (in the sense of its loosening and more or less advanced fragmentation) is subjected to a processing by which the fiber bundles or individual fibers are separated. The fibers are loosely coated in an appropriate manner. This can be achieved, for example, by the action of grinding, grating, and crushing devices, e.g., crushing rollers, grinding rollers, circular crushers, and similar machines. The fiberizing treatment can also be combined with the use of mixers and similar mixing devices, in order to transform the fibrous material into a suitable homogeneous mass, e.g., in the form of a fibrous pulp, suitable for producing the desired objects. It is also possible, for example, to introduce pieces of leather of appropriate size into mixers or similar devices, the kneading devices of which are equipped with teeth, spikes, etc. When using this type of device, mechanical processing can be carried out in one work step. To mechanically process leather previously treated with softening agents, it is also possible to press appropriately sized pieces of leather through sieve plates, tubes, or nozzles. It is also possible to divide the leather into smaller pieces of a desired fiber length and press them under high pressure, e.g., 1000 atm, through tubes that taper towards the outlet. The plastic tubes emerging from the outlet of the sausage-shaped device contain loosely arranged fibers. For this type of processing, In addition, processing with mixers or crushers can be added. Mechanical processing of the leather can optionally be carried out so that, in addition to loose fiber alignment, other goals are taken into account. For example, by forcing the fibrous material through pipes, slots, or nozzles, a certain fiber alignment (parallel fiber alignment) can be achieved in the direction of the fiber flow. Example 1. Dehaired and limed leather waste is treated with milk of lime for 2 to 3 weeks at normal temperature. The leather, cut into appropriately sized pieces (e.g., 20 x 20 cm), optionally after crushing them with spiked rollers, is fed to a circular crusher. and subjected to subsequent fiberization. Once the tibrable paint has been separated into fiber strips or individual fibers, it can be washed with similar methods to "clean" it with more lime. The paint can then be subjected to further fiberization in screw mixers, crushers, or similar devices. For example, one can proceed in this way:
