Description
Opis wynalazkuDescription of the invention
Przedmiotem wynalazku jest sposób aktywnej redukcji tła detektora scyntylacyjnego i separacji impulsów w pomiarach niskich radioaktywności.The subject of the invention is a method of active reduction of the background of a scintillation detector and separation of pulses in measurements of low radioactivity.
In the currently used scintillation detectors for the measurement of low radioactivity of nuclear radiation, active shields are used to detect signals in coincidence. This allows you to reject the so-called detector background, which is not related to the radioactivity of the tested material. To a large extent, the background signal comes from electromagnetic disturbances, secondary cosmic rays, mainly μ particles, and from radioisotopes contained in the detector material and its surroundings.
Stosowane dotychczas rozwiązania polegają na wykrywaniu sygnału z osłony aktywnej, a następnie usuwanie sygnału, który jest w koincydencji czasowej (Pall Theodórsson, “Measurement of Weak Radioactivity” rozdział 11.8 “Guard counters and their background reduction”, World Scientific, 1996). Takie rozwiązania wymagają oddzielnych torów pomiarowych co zwiększa skomplikowanie detektora. The solutions used so far consist in detecting the signal from the active shield, and then removing the signal that is in time coincidence (Pall Theodórsson, “Measurement of Weak Radioactivity” chapter 11.8 “Guard counters and their background reduction”, World Scientific, 1996). Such solutions require separate measurement paths, which increases the complexity of the detector.
From the American patent description US 4651006 (A) there is known a method using specialized electronics that counts the number of secondary pulses, which complicates the construction of the detector and does not allow the full potential of the device to be used, which results from the analysis of the time course.
Celem wynalazku jest opracowanie sposobu aktywnej redukcji tła detektora scyntylacyjnego i separacji impulsów w pomiarach niskich radioaktywności, który wyeliminuje potrzebę wykorzystania oddzielnych detektorów i układów elektronicznych. The aim of the invention is to develop a method of active reduction of the background of the scintillation detector and separation of pulses in the measurements of low radioactivity, which will eliminate the need to use separate detectors and electronic systems.
Cel ten osiągnięto stosując fotopowielacz rejestrujący równocześnie fotony z co najmniej trzech scyntylatorów o różnych czasach zaniku scyntylacji. This goal was achieved using a photomultiplier recording simultaneously photons from at least three scintillators with different scintillation decay times.
The method of active reduction of the background of the scintillation detector and separation of pulses in measurements of low radioactivity consists in placing a measuring container containing the radioactive material under the photomultiplier, over which there is a scintillator for detecting α particles with a thickness of not more than 100 μm and a scintillator for detection of β particles with a thickness of not more than 2 mm, with a layer of transparent plastic with a thickness of not less than 0.01 mm above the scintillators, over which there is another layer of scintillator, while the scintillators have different scintillation decay times, of which the signal, after being registered by the analog-to-digital converter, in at least three time intervals not exceeding 100 ns, transmits a series of measurement data during the measurement of the background and α and β radioactive sources, which are used for supervised machine learning and the creation of classifiers to distinguish pulses from particles α, β and background.
Preferably, the method of active background reduction according to the invention consists in that the background detection scintillator is formed in such a way that any line intersecting the α and β particle detection scintillators intersects the background detection scintillator.
The advantage of the solution of the invention is lowering the detection threshold of radioactive α and β radionuclides by integrating the shield with the α and β particle detection system. By classifying the signal using machine learning techniques, the background from ionizing radiation and electromagnetic disturbances is reduced, and it enables the separation of pulses caused by α, β and background radiation.
The subject of the invention has been presented in an example embodiment in the drawing, which shows the system of active background reduction of the scintillation detector and separation of pulses in the measurements of low radioactivity, and an enlarged section of the cross-section of the active shield.
Under the photomultiplier (1) a measuring container (2) is placed, inside which there is 2.0 g of the tested radioactive material (3) containing the radioactive series 238 U, 235 U, 232 Th. The α particles emitted from the radioactive material, due to their maximum range, reach the first layer of the scintillator (4) ZnS:Ag with a thickness of not more than 40 μm and cause scintillations with a decay time of about 230 ns. β radiation, due to its much greater range, loses energy and causes scintillations mainly in the second layer of the plastic scintillator (5) with a scintillation decay time of 5 ns and a thickness of 2 mm. Secondary cosmic rays, including high-energy μ particles, due to the geometry of the system, cause scintillations in the third layer of a plastic scintillator (6) with a scintillation decay time of 200 ns and a thickness of 1 mm, which is additionally separated by a layer of acrylic glass (7) with a thickness of 0.5 mm. The three scintillator layers (4), (5) and (7) are made of materials with different scintillation decay constants. The scintillator (7) is formed in the shape of a combined cylindrical tube and disc as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 1A. The signal caused by scintillations at the output of the photomultiplier tube (1) by particles α, β and background pulses, including μ, has different time courses. This signal is recorded by the analog-to-digital converter in at least three 30 ns time intervals. After analyzing the response, the signal from α, β and μ can be used to build classifiers using machine learning algorithms that allow the classification of time waveforms to α, β or background radiation.
The method of active background reduction of the scintillation detector for the measurement of low radioactivity will be used in the measurement of radioactive series 238 U, 235 U, 232 Th and other naturally occurring radionuclides in the environment, such as 87 Rb, 40 K, 14 C, 3 H.
