Description
Opis wynalazkuDescription of the invention
Wynalazek dotyczy sposobu usuwania jonów fluorkowych z zanieczyszczonych nimi wód, szczególnie ścieków, w którym do roztworów wodnych dodaje się związki wapnia. The invention relates to a method for removing fluoride ions from water contaminated therewith, particularly sewage, in which calcium compounds are added to the aqueous solutions.
Przemysł odprowadzający ścieki zawierające jony fluorkowe do wód powierzchniowych, zwiększa stężenie fluorków w wodach i zanieczyszcza środowisko. Fluoride is one of the few trace elements that are under special supervision due to its harmful effects on the environment and human and animal health. Industries that discharge wastewater containing fluoride ions into surface waters increase the concentration of fluorides in waters and pollute the environment. Therefore, the development of effective technologies for removing excess fluoride from the aquatic environment is extremely important.
Znane chemiczne metody usuwania fluorków polegają głównie na wytrącaniu zanieczyszczeń w postaci trudno rozpuszczalnego fluorku wapnia (rozpuszczalność fluorku wapnia w wodzie to 16-17 mg/l w 18°C), na przykład poprzez dodanie związków wapnia do zanieczyszczonego fluorkami roztworu, przy czym na efektywność tych procesów silnie wpływa rodzaj i forma stosowanych źródeł wapnia [B. Bartkiewicz, K. Umiejewska, Oczyszczanie ścieków przemysłowych, Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN, Warszawa 2010].Known chemical methods of fluoride removal mainly consist in precipitating pollutants in the form of sparingly soluble calcium fluoride (solubility of calcium fluoride in water is 16-17 mg/l at 18°C), for example by adding calcium compounds to a solution contaminated with fluorides, and the effectiveness of these processes is strongly influenced by the type and form of the calcium sources used [B. Bartkiewicz, K. Umiejewska, Cleaning of industrial wastewater, PWN Scientific Publishing House, Warsaw 2010].
Calcium compounds commonly used for this purpose, such as ground limestone, ground chalk or slaked lime, are usually ineffective because the layer of insoluble calcium fluoride that forms on the limestone surface limits the possibility of further reaction [Turner B. D., Binning P., Stipp S. L. S., ‘Fluoride Removal by Calcite: Evidence for Fluorite Precipitation and Surface Adsorption’, Environmental Science and Technology, 39.24 (2005), 9561-68 <https://doi.org/10.1021/es0505090>]. Therefore, they must be used in large excesses because only part of the calcium present on the grain surface reacts.
From the patent description PL237455 concerning the method of obtaining fluoride fluxes, calcium reactions with fluoride ions are known, using the high reactivity of soda lime, especially from clarifiers, which is characterized by significantly smaller particle sizes compared to technical, ground calcium carbonate. This increases the reaction surface, reducing the problem of calcium carbonate grains sticking together by calcium fluoride deposited on the surface. In addition, soda lime contains calcium chloride, which is advantageous due to the presence of soluble, and therefore easily accessible calcium ions. However, direct use of very fine soda lime generates other problems. In wet form, it is difficult to dose due to its "smear" form, and after adding to water or sewage, it is difficult to remove, e.g. by sedimentation. It also cannot be used in the form of a layer, which, due to its fine grain size, is poorly permeable to liquids and has a tendency to "stick together".
The above problems are solved by the method according to the invention, where very fine soda lime, preferably originating from clarifiers, is applied to a fibrous cellulose carrier, for example in the form of paper sludge. A composite is created that is highly permeable to liquids and very effectively removes fluoride ions, and this effectiveness, with the same mass of added fluoride precipitating agent, is even twice as high as in the case of traditional materials used for fluoride removal (ground limestone, chalk).
The method according to the invention consists in using as a calcium compound for precipitating fluoride ions a sorbent in the form of a mineral-organic composite in the form of crushed limestone with a grain size of less than 0.1 mm, preferably with a grain size of less than 2 μm, with a fibrous cellulose carrier, preferably containing cellulose fibers with a length of 0.1 to 10 mm, mainly with a length of about 2 to 5 mm, wherein the weight ratio of limestone to cellulose carrier, calculated on a dry mass basis, is 0.1 : 1 to 2 : 1, preferably 1 : 1 calculated on a dry mass basis, furthermore the sorbent is optionally used in the form of granules or membranes.
As a source of calcium, it is advantageous to use soda lime, which is formed in large quantities during the production of soda by the Solvay method, preferably from clarifiers or brine purification processes, and which is characterized by very fine grain size, well below 0.1 mm, even below 2 μm.
Główne składniki szlamu papierniczego to mineralne napełniacze - kalcyt, kaolinit oraz w niewielkich ilościach mika, talk itp., oraz duża zawartość materii organicznej - na poziomie 50-60% - składającej się głównie z włókien celulozowych [M. Frias, et al. „Calcination of art papersludge waste for the use as a supplementarycementingmaterial”, Appl. Clay Sci. 42 (1-2) (2008), 189-193, doi.org/10.1016/j.clay.2008.01.013.]As a source of cellulose fibers, it is advantageous to use paper sludge generated as industrial waste during the processing of waste paper. The main components of paper sludge are mineral fillers - calcite, kaolinite and in small amounts mica, talc, etc., and a high content of organic matter - at the level of 50-60% - consisting mainly of cellulose fibers [M. Frias, et al. "Calcination of art papersludge waste for the use as a supplementarycementingmaterial", Appl. Clay Sci. 42 (1-2) (2008), 189-193, doi.org/10.1016/j.clay.2008.01.013.]
Zastosowanie szlamu papierniczego jako nośnika wapna posodowego, pozwala zwiększyć dostępną powierzchnię reakcyjną wapna. Ponadto kompozyty takie wykazują znacznie wyższą wodoprzepuszczalność oraz znacznie lepsze właściwości przerobowe i mechaniczne w porównaniu do samego wapna posodowego. The use of paper sludge as a carrier for soda lime allows for increasing the available reaction surface of the lime. In addition, such composites exhibit significantly higher water permeability and significantly better processing and mechanical properties compared to soda lime alone.
[O. Kizinievic et al. Application of papersludge and clay in manufacture of compositematerials: Properties and biologicalsusceptibility Journal of Building Engineering 48 (2022) 104003, doi.org/10.1016/j.jobe.2022.104003].The content of cellulose fibers in the composite allows it to be shaped in virtually any way, e.g. into granules, pellets, flat membranes, plates, cylinders, etc., depending on the user's needs. It can also be placed in filter bags that are permeable to solutions, so they can be used repeatedly until the calcium compounds have completely reacted. After use, they are easy to remove from the purified solution. The used sorbent can be used, for example, as an additive/filler for building materials, similarly to paper sludge. [O. Kizinievic et al. Application of papersludge and clay in manufacture of composite materials: Properties and biologicalsusceptibility Journal of Building Engineering 48 (2022) 104003, doi.org/10.1016/j.jobe.2022.104003].
The composite used in the invention is highly permeable to liquids and removes fluoride ions very effectively, and this efficiency, with the same mass of the added fluoride precipitating agent, is even twice as high as in the case of traditional materials used to remove fluorides (ground limestone, chalk).
Wynalazek ilustrują poniższe przykładyThe invention is illustrated by the following examples
Przykład IExample I
520 g szlamu papierniczego pochodzącego z instalacji oczyszczania makulatury, o wilgotności 18% i 49% zawartości składników organicznych w postaci włókien celulozowych o długości 0,1-10 mm, głównie o długości około 2-5 mm oraz 700 cm3 wody, wymieszano w automatycznej mieszarce do sporządzania zapraw według wymagań PN-EN 196-1 o pojemności misy 5 l (firmy Mutliserw Morek), przy stałej prędkości mieszania - 62 obr/min., aż do uzyskania jednorodnej pasty, bez widocznych aglomeratów włókien celulozowych. Dodatek wody pomaga w rozbiciu aglomeratów włóknistych zawartych w szlamie papierniczym. Po uzyskaniu konsystencji pasty dodano 300 g wapna posodowego z klarownika o następującej charakterystyce: zawartość suchej masy - 34%, pH wyciągu wodnego - 9,75, zawartość części rozpuszczalnych - 15,1%, zawartość Ca: rozpuszczalnego 47,3 g/kg, całkowitego 293 g/kg, zawartość chlorków - 59 g/kg i uziarnieniu poniżej 2 μm. Mieszanie kontynuowano do całkowitego połączenia się komponentów.520 g of paper sludge from a waste paper treatment plant, with a moisture content of 18% and 49% of organic components in the form of cellulose fibers of 0.1-10 mm in length, mainly of about 2-5 mm in length, and 700 cm 3 of water, were mixed in an automatic mixer for preparing mortars according to the requirements of PN-EN 196-1 with a bowl capacity of 5 l (Mutliserw Morek), at a constant mixing speed of 62 rpm, until a homogeneous paste was obtained, without visible agglomerates of cellulose fibers. The addition of water helps to break down the fibrous agglomerates contained in the paper sludge. After obtaining the consistency of the paste, 300 g of soda lime from the clarifier were added with the following characteristics: dry matter content - 34%, pH of the water extract - 9.75, soluble parts content - 15.1%, Ca content: soluble 47.3 g/kg, total 293 g/kg, chloride content - 59 g/kg and grain size below 2 μm. Mixing was continued until the components were completely combined.
Otrzymano kompozyt o pH wyciągu wodnego 8,86 i zawartości wapnia: rozpuszczalnego 22,3 g/kg, całkowitego 242,4 g/kg, i w którym stosunek wapna posodowego do szlamu papierniczego wynosił 1:1 w przeliczeniu na suchą masę.A composite was obtained with a pH of the aqueous extract of 8.86 and a calcium content of soluble 22.3 g/kg and total 242.4 g/kg, and in which the ratio of soda lime to paper sludge was 1:1 on a dry mass basis.
Stosunek dodanego wapna posodowego do szlamu papierniczego wynosił 0,5 : 1,0 (w przeliczeniu na suchą masę), a pozostałe właściwości kompozytu były podobne jak w przykładzie I.The procedure was as in Example I, except that the mass of the wet paper sludge was 600 g at 81% moisture content, and the mass of lime from the clarifier with 64% moisture content was 111 g. The ratio of added post-soda lime to paper sludge was 0.5 : 1.0 (on a dry mass basis), and the remaining properties of the composite were similar to those in Example I.
A mixture was prepared analogously to Example I, using 973 g of wet paper sludge with a moisture content of 62%, which was mixed without the addition of water, and then 1500 g of wet lime from a clarifier with a moisture content of 66% was added. After drying to a moisture content of about 5%, a composite was obtained with a water extract pH of 8.7, lime content: soluble lime of about 24 g/kg, total lime of about 230 g/kg, and in which the ratio of post-soda lime to paper sludge was 1.5:1.0 on a dry mass basis.
The water permeability of the composites thus obtained was tested in the following manner: on the perforated bottom of a plexiglass tube with a diameter of 7.1 cm and a height of 55 cm, a layer of approximately 4.0 cm of the composite obtained according to Example I was placed. The height of the layer was stabilized by lightly tamping it and removing air bubbles, and then the tube was filled with water to a height of 45 cm. Then the change in the height of the water column was measured as a function of time. On this basis, the water flow through the composite layer was calculated as a function of time. The measurement was repeated 10 times, obtaining an average permeability of 471 +/- 50 cm 3 /h.
The permeability measurement for clean paper sludge performed in analogous conditions showed a permeability of 932 +/- 14 cm3 / h, and for the soda lime used in Example I alone a result of 79 +/- 20 cm3/ h was obtained, however, when a fluoride solution with a concentration of 500 mg/ dcm3 was used instead of water, the flow was almost half as slow, and after some time it was blocked almost completely.
Similarly to Example IV, permeability measurements were performed for the composite from Example II and Example III and the permeability values obtained were: 433 +/- 13 cm 3 /h and 330 +/- 20 cm 3 /h, respectively.
The composite obtained according to Example I was spread on a flat surface in the form of a layer about 0.5 cm thick and lightly compressed. After drying to a moisture content of about 3 to 6%, a mechanically durable board of the type of fibreboard or cardboard about 3-4 mm thick was obtained. After immersion in water, the board did not disintegrate and retained its original shape. Analogous effects were obtained with composites obtained according to Examples II and III. The composites dried in the form of a board were crushed into fragments of 2 to 5 mm in size, which were used to test the ability to bind fluoride ions.
Otrzymany granulat wykorzystano do badania zdolności wiązania jonów fluorkowych. The composite from Example I was dried to a moisture content of about 20-30% and then granulated using a two-stage granulation described in Polish application P.437277, consisting in pressing through a screw granulator with a matrix of 8 to 25 mm thick, preferably 15 mm thick and holes of 3-8 mm diameter, preferably 4-5 mm. The resulting short rolls of constant diameter are directed to a rotating drum equipped with elements causing further breaking of the rolls and their gradual transformation into a material containing grains in the form of regular balls or ovals with a diameter determined by the size of the holes in the screw granulator matrix. The thickness of the matrix can also be used to regulate the compressive force, and thus the hardness of the granules. The obtained granules were characterized by high mechanical strength (compression resistance above 100 kN) and did not disintegrate in water. The obtained granulate was used to test the ability to bind fluoride ions.
Przykład VIIIExample VIII
W celu oceny efektywności neutralizacji jonów fluorkowych przez kompozyty uformowane i rozdrobnione według przykładu VI, przeprowadzono badanie, w którym ilość materiału sorpcyjnego była stała i wynosiła 1 g. Naważkę zalewano 50 ml roztworu fluorku potasu o stężeniu jonów fluorkowych 500 mg/dcm3. Stężenie jonów fluorkowych określano za pomocą elektrody jonoselektywnej z dodatkiem roztworu buforowego TISAB.In order to assess the effectiveness of fluoride ion neutralization by composites formed and crushed according to Example VI, a test was carried out in which the amount of sorption material was constant and amounted to 1 g. The sample was poured with 50 ml of potassium fluoride solution with a fluoride ion concentration of 500 mg/dcm 3 . The fluoride ion concentration was determined using an ion-selective electrode with the addition of TISAB buffer solution.
W przypadku kompozytu z przykładu I po 2 godzinach z roztworu ubyło 25% początkowej ilości jonów fluorkowych. Dla porównania techniczny węglan wapnia (mielony, uziarnienie ok. 20 +/- 15 μm w tych samych warunkach usunął jedynie 2% początkowej ilości jonów fluorkowych. In the case of the composite from Example I, after 2 hours, 25% of the initial amount of fluoride ions had disappeared from the solution. For comparison, technical calcium carbonate (ground, grain size approx. 20 +/- 15 μm) in the same conditions removed only 2% of the initial amount of fluoride ions.
Podobne zależności stwierdzono w przypadku pozostałych kompozytów (z przykładu II i III). Similar relationships were found for the remaining composites (from Examples II and III). Where, despite the formally lower calcium content (compared to ground lime), the efficiency of fluoride ion binding by the composites was clearly higher.
Przykład IXExample IX
Granulat kompozytu wykonany według przykładu VII (7 g) umieszczono w kolumnie 10 mm i długości 25 cm, a następnie przez kolumnę przepuszczono 500 ml roztworu fluorku sodu o stężeniu 120 mg/l. Composite granulate prepared according to Example VII (7 g) was placed in a 10 mm and 25 cm long column, and then 500 ml of sodium fluoride solution with a concentration of 120 mg/l was passed through the column. The fluoride content in the effluent after passing through the column was tested (in 50 ml portions) at different flow rates - from 1.6 to 24 ml/min. Based on the tests, it was determined that the sorbent retains 3.4-4.9 mg of fluorine per 1 g of sorbent, and even at the maximum applied flow rates, the fluoride binding efficiency was very high.
