Description

Opis wynalazkuDescription of the invention

The invention concerns a thermal conductivity test stand for testing thermal conductivity using thermography, primarily for heterogeneous materials, such as layered polymer-based composite materials and porous materials characterized by low thermal conductivity. The stand is also designed for testing contact heat flow resistance.

The measuring system consists of two metal bodies, one of which is heated and the other cooled. These bodies are either rectangular or cylindrical in shape. A test sample is placed between these bodies, in contact with them. Due to the role the metal bodies play in the measurement system, they are often referred to as heat flow meter blocks/bars or heat flux meter blocks/bars. For simplicity, they are referred to hereinafter as measurement bodies or, for short, bodies. One of these bodies is mounted via a heating or cooling element on a lower mounting plate, which constitutes the stationary base of the test stand. The second body is attached to a heating or cooling element, which is attached to a movable upper mounting plate, which is moved relative to vertical guides or guide columns. The movable mounting plate allows the upper measuring body to be moved relative to the lower measuring body by a predetermined distance, allowing for the placement of a test sample between the two bodies and the subsequent application of a compressive load on the sample, enabling contact measurements of heat flow resistance for various pressure forces.

Another US patent, US 10775329 (B2), describes a device for determining thermal conductivity. Its measuring system consists of two metal measuring bodies (one heated and one cooled), between which a test sample is placed. The device is equipped with an axial correction system for the measuring bodies, ensuring uniform pressure on the test sample, which directly affects the accuracy of the measurement. This device allows for testing samples with only minor deviations in the plane-parallelism of the surfaces in contact with the measuring bodies.

Also known from Polish patent description PL 238631 (B1) is a station for testing contact heat flow resistance and thermal conductivity. The measuring system consists of two metal measuring bodies (one heated and one cooled), between which a test sample is placed. This station uses a system for precise temperature control of the measuring bodies, which consists of an adjacent thermoelectric module (Peltier) and a water cooler, mounted on springs located between the measuring body and a mounting plate and two lateral supports. This system ensures high precision and stability of the set temperature values during the measurement, which in turn increases the station's measurement accuracy.

Najczęściej stosowane laboratoryjne stanowiska do pomiaru przewodności cieplnej w warunkach ustalonego przepływu ciepła, których układ pomiarowy stanowią dwie metalowe bryły prostopadłościenne lub walcowe, umożliwiają wykonywanie badań zgodnie z wytycznymi przedstawionymi m.in. w amerykańskiej normie ASTM D5470-17 (Standard Test Method for Thermal Transmission Properties of Thermally Conductive Electrical Insulation Materials, ASTM International, West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA, 2017). The most commonly used laboratory stands for measuring thermal conductivity under steady-state heat flow conditions, which utilize two metal cuboidal or cylindrical bodies as the measuring system, enable testing according to the guidelines outlined in, among others, the American standard ASTM D5470-17 (Standard Test Method for Thermal Transmission Properties of Thermally Conductive Electrical Insulation Materials, ASTM International, West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA, 2017). Both bodies used in these stands are made of the same high-thermal-conductivity material, most often copper or aluminum alloys. These stands measure the heat flux (steady over time) needed to determine the thermal conductivity of the test sample. Furthermore, the temperature between the contacting surfaces is estimated, i.e., the sample with the heated body and the sample with the cooled body. Based on these measurements, the total heat flow resistance is determined, which is the sum of the (internal) resistance of the sample and the two resistances of the contacting surfaces, which in turn can be converted into the value of effective thermal conductivity.

W celu wyznaczenia strumienia ciepła, koniecznego do obliczenia przewodności cieplnej, dokonuje się pomiaru wartości (gradientu) temperatury wzdłuż wysokości/długości obu brył pomiarowych. To determine the heat flux required to calculate thermal conductivity, the temperature (gradient) is measured along the height/length of both measurement solids. To determine the heat flux as accurately as possible, which has a significant impact on the obtained result, temperature measurements are taken at several locations on each measurement solid. Contact temperature sensors (e.g., thermocouples) are used for this purpose, placed in blind holes, symmetrically drilled along the height of both measurement solids. The measuring tips of these sensors are mounted on or near the axis of each measurement solid. To estimate the temperature at the interface between the measurement solids and both sample surfaces, a typical procedure involves linear extrapolation of the measured temperature (gradient) values along the length of the measurement solids to the length corresponding to the ends of the measurement solids. The lack of actual (measured) temperature values at the interface between the measurement solids and both sample surfaces can lead to measurement uncertainty.

Praktyka laboratoryjna dowodzi, że brak powtarzalności jakości zakładanej izolacji pomiędzy poszczególnymi pomiarami uniemożliwia prowadzenie badań porównawczych, pomimo ustabilizowanych zadanych wartości te mperatury układu grzewczego i układu chłodzącego. Brak skutecznej izolacji układu pomiarowego wprowadza znaczny błąd do obliczanej wartości współczynnika przewodzenia ciepła. An accurate steady-state approach for characterizing the thermal conductivity of additively manufactured polymer composites, Case Studies in Thermal Engineering 31,2022 (doi: 10.1016/j.csite.2022.101829).To meet the requirement of one-dimensional heat flow in the measurement system, both metal measuring bodies must be thermally insulated with external insulation made of a material with very good insulating properties, which will allow for accurate heat flux determination. For some tested materials (e.g., those with low thermal conductivity or high heat flow resistance), it is necessary to perform measurements at high temperatures within the heating system of the heated body. This results in greater heat losses in the measurement system, and their minimization becomes necessary (to ensure one-dimensional heat flow). This presents a technical challenge, as in existing solutions, the insulation of the measurement system has a series of holes or a slot for the temperature sensor wires protruding from the measuring bodies. In practice, due to the presence of temperature sensors in the holes of the measuring bodies, it is impossible to use "tight" thermal insulation. Furthermore, ensuring the insulation adheres with the required accuracy to all lateral surfaces of the measuring bodies is difficult. Due to the local lack of adhesion of the insulation to the lateral surfaces of the measuring bodies, there is heterogeneity in the heat flux density, which consequently affects the measured value. Laboratory practice demonstrates that the lack of repeatability of the assumed insulation quality between individual measurements prevents comparative testing, despite stabilized setpoint temperatures for the heating and cooling systems. The lack of effective insulation of the measuring system introduces a significant error into the calculated thermal conductivity coefficient. Heat losses from the measuring system to the environment directly affect the one-dimensional heat flow assumption used in the calculations. The influence of the quality of insulation of the measuring system and other related factors on the measurement errors obtained when using the discussed test stands is described in the source literature, including: Ahmed Elkholy, Roger Kempers, An accurate steady-state approach for characterizing the thermal conductivity of additively manufactured polymer composites, Case Studies in Thermal Engineering 31, 2022 (doi: 10.1016/j.csite.2022.101829).

Dotychczasowe stanowiska do badań przewodności cieplnej nie umożliwiają rejestracji rzeczywistego rozkładu temperatury na powierzchni brył pomiarowych, stosując bezkontaktowe badania termograficzne, ze względu na obecność izolacji termicznej, przysłaniającej dostęp do brył pomiarowych. Typowe rozwiązania konstrukcyjne izolacji termicznej brył pomiarowych, uwzględniające obecność kontaktowych czujników temperatury, nie pozwalają na uzyskiwanie możliwie wysokiej dokładności pomiarowej stanowiska badawczego.Existing thermal conductivity test stands do not allow for the recording of actual temperature distribution on the surface of the measurement bodies using non-contact thermographic testing due to the presence of thermal insulation, which obscures access to the measurement bodies. Typical design solutions for thermal insulation of measurement bodies, which incorporate contact temperature sensors, do not allow for the highest possible measurement accuracy of the test stand.

The purpose of the invention and the technical issue that requires a solution is to develop a stand for testing thermal conductivity using the thermographic method, which enables the recording of the actual temperature distribution on the surface of the measuring bodies and the tested sample (in one-dimensional heat flow conditions), and at the same time the temperature values at the contact points of the measuring bodies and the tested sample, and on this basis, obtaining a high accuracy of the value of the measured parameter.

Stanowisko pomiarowe według wynalazku cechuje się uzyskiwaniem mniejszych błędów pomiarowych w stosunku do znanych rozwiązań, i w efekcie pozwala wyznaczyć z dużą dokładnością wartość wielkości mierzonej. The station according to the invention completely eliminates temperature (gradient) measurement using contact temperature sensors, thus enabling the use of high-precision insulation, which has been difficult or previously impossible to achieve using known solutions. This high-precision insulation allows for high accuracy in adherence to the surfaces of the measuring bodies and the accuracy of adhesion between individual insulation components. The insulation design according to the invention results in highly uniform heat flux density, which ultimately leads to reduced measurement error. Furthermore, the station according to the invention enables visualization of heat flow through the test sample, which in turn provides an additional source of knowledge needed for, among other things, numerical simulations of heat flow, e.g., in the case of testing heterogeneous layered materials, primarily composite materials with a polymer matrix and porous materials. An additional benefit of the solution according to the invention is the lack of additional peripheral devices necessary when using contact temperature sensors, such as a multi-channel temperature recorder or a system for thermostating (or temperature compensation) the cold ends of thermal vapor heaters. Thanks to the solution according to the invention, there are no additional steps required to calibrate thermocouples, for example, after their periodic replacement. Furthermore, the absence of temperature sensors protruding from holes in the measuring bodies eliminates the phenomenon of thermal bridges. A benefit of using the station according to the invention is the complete repeatability of the measurement system insulation between individual measurements, which enables comparative analyses and estimation of the dispersion of results when testing samples from a single population. The measurement station according to the invention is characterized by smaller measurement errors compared to known solutions, and as a result, allows for the determination of the measured value with high accuracy.

Obie bryły pomiarowe, górna (6) i dolna (7), mają postać prostopadłościanów o powierzchni podstawy 40 x 40 mm2 i wysokości 115 mm. Pomiędzy bryłą pomiarową górną (6) a dolną (7) znajduje się próbka do badań (8) z warstwowego materiału kompozytowego epoksydowo-węglowego (typu CFRP) o grubości 4,6 mm i powierzchni 40 x 40 mm2. Stanowisko posiada zewnętrzną izolację termiczną obu brył pomiarowych, górnej (6) i dolnej (7), wytworzoną z pianki poliuretanowej (PUR), która składa się z części nieruchomej górnej (11 a) i części nieruchomej dolnej (11b) oraz czterech części przesuwnych, górnej lewej (12a), górnej prawej (12b), dolnej lewej (12c), dolnej prawej (12d). Obie Części nieruchome (11a) i (11b) izolacji w przekroju poprzecznym posiadają kształt litery „U” z wewnętrznym wybraniem wytworzonym na wymiar brył pomiarowych. Ponadto, część nieruchoma górna (11 a) zakrywa jednocześnie trzy z czterech ścian bocznych bryły pomiarowej górnej (6), a część nieruchoma dolna (11 b) zakrywa jednocześnie trzy z czterech ścian bocznych bryły pomiarowej dolnej (7). Każda część przesuwna (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) izolacji posiada otwory (12.1) o średnicy nieznacznie większej w stosunku do średnicy trzpieni (13.1), umożliwiając tym samym wypełnienie pozostałej przestrzeni klejem montażowym. Aby uzyskać prawidłowe wyniki potrzebne do obliczeń wartości wielkości mierzonej należy dokonać kilku pomiarów wstępnych (rejestracji gradientu temperatury) w różnych odstępach czasu i porównać zarejestrowane gradienty temperatury celem stwierdzenia ustabilizowania się temperatury układu. Po wykonanym pomiarze, celem wyj ęcia i zmiany próbki do badań (8), wysuwa się dociskacze (20a) i (20b) z prowadnic i zdejmuje się części nieruchome (11a) i (11b) izolacji, przemieszcza się części przesuwne (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) izolacji do pozycji otwartej (B) i kolejno podnosi się bryłę pomiarową górną (6) na zadaną odległość względem bryły pomiarowej dolnej (7) za pośrednictwem układu napędowego (5).The thermal conductivity test stand consists of a lower mounting plate (1), an upper mounting plate (2), a resistance plate (3), a heating element (9), a cooler (10), and a measuring system in the form of two measuring bodies: upper (6) and lower (7), where one of these bodies is heated and the other is cooled. The upper mounting plate (2) is movable and is moved (in the direction of movement rz) on linear bearings relative to four guide columns (4) via a drive system (5) mounted on the resistance plate (3). The drive system (5), which allows for the adjustment of the pressure force on the tested samples, consists of an actuator with a clutch or a stepper motor with a clutch and a lead screw. The lower support plate (1.1) is mounted on the lower mounting plate (1) via four identical lower flexible elements (1.2) located in the corners of the lower support plate (1.1). Similarly, the upper support plate (2.1) is attached to the upper mounting plate (2) via four identical upper flexible elements (2.2) located in the corners of the upper support plate (2.1). A cooler (10) in the form of a metal block with internal water channels is indirectly attached to the lower support plate (1.1) (through an insulating spacer), on which the lower measuring body (7) is permanently mounted. In turn, an electrofusion heating element (9) is indirectly attached to the upper support plate (2.1) (through an insulating spacer), to which the upper measuring body (6) is attached. Both measuring bodies, the upper (6) and the lower (7), are in the form of cuboids with a base area of 40 x 40 mm2 and a height of 115 mm. The upper (6) and lower (7) measuring bodies are made of a metal alloy with high thermal conductivity, preferably aluminum. The upper base of the upper measuring body (6) is heated by contact with a heating element (9), and the lower base of the lower measuring body (7) is cooled by contact with a cooler (10). Between the upper (6) and lower (7) measuring bodies there is a test sample (8) made of a layered epoxy-carbon composite material (CFRP type) with a thickness of 4.6 mm and an area of 40 x 40 mm 2 . The station has external thermal insulation of both measuring bodies, the upper (6) and lower (7), made of polyurethane foam (PUR), which consists of a fixed upper part (11a) and a fixed lower part (11b), as well as four sliding parts: upper left (12a), upper right (12b), lower left (12c), and lower right (12d). Both fixed insulation parts (11a) and (11b) have a U-shaped cross-section with an internal recess manufactured to the dimensions of the measuring bodies. Furthermore, the fixed upper part (11a) simultaneously covers three of the four side walls of the upper measuring body (6), and the fixed lower part (11b) simultaneously covers three of the four side walls of the lower measuring body (7). Both fixed parts (11a) and (11b) of the insulation are attached separately to the measuring bodies (6) and (7) and are held in the desired position by upper (20a) and lower (20b) hold-down clamps, slidably mounted in self-locking guides. The front wall of the upper measuring body (6) is symmetrically covered (while the temperature of the measuring system stabilizes) by two sliding parts (12a) and (12b) of the insulation. Similarly, the front wall of the lower measuring body (7) is symmetrically covered (while the temperature of the measuring system stabilizes) by two sliding parts (12c) and (12d) of the insulation. Each of the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) of the insulation is permanently mounted (through an adhesive connection) on a stiffening metal support bracket (13), equipped with pins (13.1), ensuring a stable mounting of the foam insulation. Each sliding part (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) of the insulation has holes (12.1) with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the pins (13.1), thus enabling the remaining space to be filled with assembly adhesive. The support bracket (13) is made of a flat bar, e.g., aluminum, 5 mm thick, on which three pins (13.1) are permanently mounted in a row, using any joining technique, preferably by pressing tightly fitted pins into holes in the flat bar not shown in the drawings. The support bracket (13) has a 2.5 mm deep rectangular socket (13.2) with dimensions of 70.2 mm x 30.2 mm, which is matched to the shape and dimensions of the rectangular mounting plate of the movable member (14) of the actuator module (15). The socket (13.2) contains four identical holes (13.3) in which tightly fitted permanent magnets are mounted, holding the steel mounting plate in a preset position. It is also possible to use a screw connection between the mounting plate and the support bracket (13), in which the holes (13.3) are threaded. This type of detachable mounting method (using permanent magnets or screws) allows for easy and quick removal of the sliding parts of the insulation. In the example embodiment, the diameter of the pin (13.1) is 7 mm, and the diameter of the blind hole (12.1) is 9 mm. The number of blind holes (12.1) is equal to the number of pins (13.1) and is at least two. The space between the blind holes (12.1) and the pins (13.1) is filled with assembly glue. For effective thermal insulation of the measuring bodies (6) and (7), it is advantageous for the curing process of the assembly glue to be carried out on the target testing stand, ensuring adhesion of the surfaces of the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) to the surfaces of the measuring bodies (6) and (7), which in turn ensures precise adhesion of these surfaces during the measurement. The movable member (14) has a double guide on linear bearings built into the body of the actuator module (15). The actuator module (15) is an electric (or optionally pneumatic) linear drive with a programmable stroke length in the range of 0 to 20 mm. The upper actuator modules (15) are attached via supports (19) to the upper support plate (2.1), and the lower actuator modules (15) are attached via supports (19) to the lower support plate (1.1). The actuator modules (15) enable the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) of the insulation to move back and forth (in the direction of movement rx) by means of forces Fx and -Fx (movement from the closed position A to the open position B and return movement). The station according to the invention enables testing of samples having a slight deviation of the plane-parallelism of the surfaces that are in contact with the measuring bodies (6) and (7), which results from the use of lower (1.2) and upper (2.2) flexible elements for attaching the lower (1.1) and upper (2.1) support plates. Hence, it should be noted that the identical designation of the direction of movement (rx) for the movable members (14) of the lower and upper actuator modules (15) is simplified (conventional) and true only in the case of testing flat-parallel samples, which do not cause a change in the mutual position of the axes of the measuring solids and the directions of movement of the movable members of the lower and upper actuator modules coincide. The station has an arm (18) for stable mounting of the thermal imaging camera (16), preferably via a linear guide (17). The shape of the arm (18) is designed so that the optical axis of the thermal imaging camera (16) is preferably located at the height of the tested sample (8). The use of the arm (18) with the guide (17) enables positioning of the thermal imaging camera (16) and precise setting of its distance from the measuring solids (6) and (7), which in turn ensures repeatability of image recording for the assigned number of pixels on the defined length of the measurement lines on the surface of both solids. In order to record a thermographic image on the surface of the measuring bodies, upper (6) and lower (7), and the tested sample (8), the PC (21) or the PLC programmable controller (22) triggers the movement of the movable members (14) of the actuator modules (15) over a programmed distance (i.e. from the closed position A to the open position B, e.g. by a stroke value of 15 mm and in less than 2 s). Then, after the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c) and (12d) of the insulation move to the open position (B), a signal is automatically sent from the linear drive (equipped with an internal encoder-type position sensor) to the PC (21), which immediately starts recording (registration of thermographic images) with the thermal imaging camera (16) via dedicated software. During the heat flow stabilization stage in the measuring system, the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) of the insulation are pushed together in pairs until they are in contact (closed position A), ensuring precise ("tight") thermal insulation of both measuring bodies (6) and (7). The surface fragment of both measuring bodies (6) and (7), on which thermographic images are recorded, is covered with a thin layer of matte black paint with an emissivity coefficient of approximately 0.9. Optionally, to achieve greater accuracy in measuring the temperature distribution across the thickness of the tested sample (8), the thermal imaging camera (16) is moved on a linear guide (17) towards the measuring bodies (6) and (7) and an additional thermographic image is recorded. Based on the recorded temperature gradients on both measuring bodies (6) and (7) and on the thickness of the tested sample (8), the heat flux value required for calculating thermal conductivity or heat flow resistance is determined. To obtain correct results needed for calculating the measured value, several initial measurements (temperature gradient recordings) should be performed at different time intervals and the recorded temperature gradients should be compared to determine whether the system temperature has stabilized. Each temperature gradient recording takes place immediately (and at the same time) after the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) of the insulation have moved to the open position (B). After the measurement, to remove and change the test sample (8), the hold-down clamps (20a) and (20b) are extended from the guides and the fixed parts (11a) and (11b) of the insulation are removed, the sliding parts (12a), (12b), (12c), (12d) of the insulation are moved to the open position (B), and the upper measuring body (6) is raised to a predetermined distance relative to the lower measuring body (7) via the drive system (5).
