Abstract

A cigarette filter consists of fibres (12), each made up of a core (20) and a sleeve (21) of two different types of fibre e.g. polyethylene and polyester. The length of the fibres is less than that of the length of the filter. The fibres are 0.5 to 30 mm long pref. 3mm to 6 mm. The sleeve has a lower melting point than the core. At least one part of each fibre (12) has a cruciform contact point with another fibre (12). The fibres (12) adhere or bond to each other at contact points (18). Also claimed is a process to manufacture the cigarette filter in which the bi-component fibre is manufactured and chopped to a length less than that of the filter. The fibres (12) are heated to a temperature above that of the fibre sleeve (21) and then allowed to cool. The fibres are surrendered to a conveyer belt on which a powder additive is admixed prior to final conversion to filter form.
