Przedmiotem wynalazku są związki ciekłokrystaliczne przedstawione wzorem ogólnym I, w którym R3 oznacza niezależnie grupę alkilową (H2n+1Cn) lub alkenylową (H2n-1Cn) zawierające od 1 do 12 atomów węgla, pierścień A oznacza niepodstawiony pierścień benzenowy, pirydynowy lub pirymidynowy lub pierścień cykloheksanowy w konfiguracji trans, r oznacza liczbę 0 lub 1, 2; X2, X3, X4, X5 oznaczają niezależnie atom wodoru lub fluoru lub chloru, X1 oznacza atom wodoru lub także atom fluoru, gdy równocześnie X2 lub X2 i X3 lub X2, X3 i X4 oznaczają atom lub atomy fluoru, Y oznacza grupę alkilową (H2m+1Cm) lub alkenylową (H2m-1Cm) alkoksylową (H2m+1CmO) lub alkenyloksylową (H2m-1CmO), zawierającą od 1 do 12 atomów węgla lub oznacza niezależnie atom wodoru, fluoru, chloru lub grupę NCS oraz media ciekłokrystaliczne zwierające tylko związki I lub związki I i inne związki. Media te mogą wykazywać ujemną lub dodatnią anizotropię dielektryczną lub zmieniać znak anizotropii dielektrycznej z dodatniej na ujemną ze zmianą częstotliwości.
