Źródło prądowe o kształtowanej charakterystyce składa się z "n" pojedynczych źródeł prądowych (1) regulowanych bądź nieregulowanych, diod (D) i ze sterowanych zaworów energoelektronicznych (V), gdzie "n" oznacza liczbę naturalną. Pojedyncze źródła prądowe (1) połączone są równolegle, a każde pojedyncze źródło prądowe (1) ma, bezpośrednio na wyjściu, równolegle włączony sterowany zawór energoelektroniczny (V), a za zaworem (V), szeregowo włączoną diodę (D). Połączenie jest następujące: do bieguna dodatniego źródła prądowego (1) dołączony jest biegun dodatni zaworu (V) i anoda diody (D), a biegun ujemny zaworu (V) jest połączony z biegunem ujemnym źródła prądowego (1).
