Abstract
The subject of the invention is a method of modifying diaphragms made of technical nonwovens (WT). As shown by research conducted at OBRGSChem Chemkop, the features that distinguish them from classic diaphragms include: high mechanical strength, chemical resistance, high homogeneity of structure, stability of characteristics, flexibility, no need for energy-consuming vacuum deposition on a cathode grid. A serious drawback of diaphragms made of WT is their excessively high hydrodynamic permeability, which prevents the achievement of technical and economic indicators of the electrolysis process comparable to those obtained with the participation of classic diaphragm materials. The essence of the invention is a method of chemical modification of WT diaphragms, which consists in embedding in the pores, i.e. ("inter-fiber space") of WT a chemical substance resistant to restrictive physicochemical conditions prevailing in the inter-electrode zone of the electrolyzer. As a result of embedding the modifier in the pores of the diaphragm ("inter-fiber space"), the diameter of the pores (r) transferring ions is significantly reduced, and also due to the porous structure of the introduced substance, their number (n), length (l) and pore tortuosity coefficient (k) are significantly increased. The effect of the above actions is a significant improvement in the separation properties of WT diaphragms in the separation of dissimilar electrode cells, and consequently a significant reduction in the mass exchange unfavorable for the electrolysis process associated with the diffusion and migration of OH- ions from the cathode to the anode chamber. Chemical modification allows obtaining electrolysis products, i.e. chlorine, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen with a concentration and quality comparable to the concentration and quality of the above products obtained with the participation of classical diaphragms deposited using the vacuum technique, with much more favorable technical and economic indicators of the electrolysis process.
