Eng., Józef Janikowski, M.Sc. Eng., Adolf Jung Patent owner: Łódzkie Zaklady Kinotechniczne, Łódz (Poland) Device for developing images in photocopiers The subject of the invention is a device for developing a latent electrostatic image by the cascade method. In the xerographic technique, two types of images developed by the cascade method are distinguished: line images in which the width of lines and graphic characters does not exceed about 1 mm, and halftone images in which the line width is greater than 1 mm. The practical implementation of developing line images on xerographic plates using the cascade method generally does not present technical difficulties and can be accomplished in the known device described, for example, in U.S. Patent 2,600,580, in which the loading of the photo-semiconductive layer, exposure and development of the latent electrostatic image were performed in separate operations. The efficiency of this device was low due to the large amount of manual labor involved in the xerographic process. Another disadvantage of this device was the ease of accidental damage to the photo-semiconductive layer due to the need to use a light barrier between individual operations, inserted into the xerographic plate holder at a small distance. distance from the photo-semi-conductive layer. There are also known methods of cascade development of halftone images, carried out in such a way that an electrostatic screen in the form of a metal plate or a stretched conductive fabric is placed over the surface of the xerographic plate, at a short distance from it. It was found that in the known devices during development, difficulties occurred in the free and uniform flow of the developing mixture through the gap between the electrostatic screen and the xerographic plate due to the presence of significant electrostatic field strengths between the surface of the halftone image, causing dielectric polarization of the carrier grains. The polarized carrier grains were attracted to the xerographic plate at the edges of the halftone image, where the electrostatic field strength was the largest, which hindered the free flow of other carrier grains, which as a result were deposited on large areas of the halftone image, preventing proper image development. These disadvantages are not present in the device in which a xerographic plate without a backlight frame was used, and the development of continuous tone images is carried out in the presence of an electrostatic screen in the form of a movable guide belt. The subject of the invention is shown in an example embodiment in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows the device in a side view in vertical section, Fig. 2 — the device in a front view in a partial vertical section, Fig. 3 — the xerographic plate in an axometric view, Fig. 4 — the xerographic plate hook in a side view in vertical section, Fig. 5 - the xerographic plate feed mechanism in an axonometric view, Fig. 6 - the left xerographic plate guide inside the developing cassette in a front view in a vertical cross-section, Fig. 7 - the transport rollers in a top view. According to the invention, in the light-tight housing 1, in which an opening 2 is made, used and ¦) for exposing the xerographic plate 3, there is a darkening chamber 4 inside which two identical anti-light curtains 5 are placed, suspended in a rotatable manner on axles 6, and guiding rollers 7 facilitating the introduction of the photo-semiconductive plate into the interior of the device. In the housing 1, supports 8 are permanently mounted, in which the roller 9 is placed. On the shaft 9 there is a frame 10 attached to which are attached guides 11 with inclined thresholds 30, as well as transport rollers 12 and levers 13 with a pressure roller 14. Inside the frame 10 there are transport belts 15, the ends of which are mounted on drums 16 and 17 mounted on rollers 18 and 19, which are coupled to each other by means of two identical toothed wheels 20. The transport belts 15 surround the rollers 21 and are tensioned by springs 22 through rollers 23. On the belts 15 there is a strip 24 with a catch 25 mounted in a rotatable manner on the axle 26 and pressed against the edge of the strip 24 by a spring 27. On the front part frame 10 is provided with a bumper 28 and a loading device 29, manufactured according to commonly known solutions. On the rear part of frame 10 there is a device for developing images. The developing device has a container 31 with a door 33, inside which there is a developing mixture 32. In the container 31 there is a conveyor 34, consisting of blades 35 mounted in two side discs 36, which are mounted on a roller 37. On the opposite side to the container 31 there is a container 38 with an inclined bottom 39 and a cover 40. A device for developing continuous tone images is attached to the cover 40. This device consists of an electrically a conducting tape 41 mounted on drums 42 and 43 coupled together by means of a chain 50. Drum 43 is driven by a motor 48 through a belt 49. The tape 41 goes around guides 44 and is tensioned by roller tensioners 45 with the aid of springs 46 and rods 47. The guides 44 are mounted on levers 51 and pressed by springs 52 against the retaining angles 53. The levers 13 are supported by projections 60 located on two sliding strips 61 coupled by means of levers 62 and 63 and a shaft 64. The lever 63 is connected by a rod 65 to a pusher 66 cooperating with with a locking cam 67 mounted on the shaft 68. Cams 69, a driving cam 70, a locking cam 67 and a toothed wheel 71 are also mounted on the shaft 68. A pusher 72, articulated with a lever 73, permanently mounted on the rotary axis 9, cooperates with the driving cam 70. The toothed wheel 71 cooperates with a worm gear 74 driven by a motor 75. The xerographic plate 3 consists of a conductive substrate 76 covered with a photo-semi-conductive layer 77. A strip is attached to the bottom of the substrate 76 in its front part. 78, and in the rear part on top of the substrate 76 there is a handle 79. The operation of the device is as follows: The xerographic plate 3 is manually inserted along the rollers 7 into the interior of the device through the darkening chamber 4, wherein the front edge of the xerographic plate 3 moves aside the anti-light curtains 5 which prevent light from penetrating into the interior of the housing 1. The curtains 5 have undercuts in their central part which form a gap above the xerographic plate 3 in order to avoid scratching the photo-semi-conductive layer 77. After the xerographic plate 3 has passed through the darkening chamber 4, the anti-light curtains 5 return to the the initial position under the influence of gravity force 25 or built-in springs, which tightly closes the darkening chamber 4. The front edge of the xerographic plate 3, after passing through the chamber 4, gets between the guides 11 and rests on the strip 24, simultaneously pressing the strip 78 on the lever of the control switch, which switches on the generator supplying the charging device 29 with a constant voltage of about 6000 V to about 12000 V, and starts the motor driving the tapes 15. The tapes 15, winding 35 on the drums 16, cause the strip 24 to move, whereby the catch 25 catches on the strip 78 of the xerographic plate 3, introducing it into the exposure zone. The xerographic plate 3 rolls on transport rollers 12, the rotation planes of which are inclined with respect to the guides U by an angle of about 5° to about 15°, which causes the side edge of the plate 3 to adhere precisely to the side surface of one of the guides 11, thus enabling the repeatable positioning of the plate 3 in the exposure zone. In the end part of the exposure zone, the front edge of the plate 3 presses the strip 78 on the lever of another control connector, causing the movement of the plate 3 to stop and the generator to switch off and the light source to switch on, causing the xerographic plate 3 to be exposed with the desired image through the opening 2 and activating the time relay which automatically measures the set exposure time. 55 Then the xerographic plate 3 is introduced into the developing device. The cam 70, by means of the pusher 72 and the lever 73, tilts the frame 10 together with the developing device placed on it. At this time, the locking cam 67, by means of the pusher 66, the rod 65, the levers 63 and 62, moves the strips 61, releasing the locked levers 13, which, through the rollers 14, press the tightly closed xerographic plate 3 against the guides 11 and the lower edge of the positioning angles 53.5. In the initial period of developing, the developing device is tilted around the roller 9 in such a way that the container 31 rises smoothly upwards and at the same time the conveyor 34 feeds the developing mixture 3^ onto the inclined threshold 30 of the guide 11. The developing mixture 32 flows under the influence of gravity along the inclined surface of the xerographic plate 3 and falls through the semi-inclined threshold 30 of the second guide 11 into the container 38. After the appropriate amount of the developing mixture 32 has flowed from the container 31 into the container 38, the driving cam 70 in its further movement causes the developing device to tilt in the opposite direction. At this time, the developing mixture 32 flows from the container 38 along the surface of the plate 3 into the container 31. Thanks to the inclination of the bottom 39 in relation to the surface of the plate 3 and the appropriate shape of the driving cam 70, a gradual and smooth flow of the developing mixture 32 over the surface of the plate 3 is achieved. After the developing mixture 32 has flowed into the container 31, the driving cam 70 brings the developing device to the initial horizontal position. At this time, the locking cam 67 releases the tension of the rod 65, thanks to which the strips 61 return to the initial position by means of appropriate springs and, through the projections 60, cause the lever 13 to be blocked, thus releasing the pressure of the plate 3 against the guide 11 and the angle brackets 53. Then, the strip 24 withdraws automatically. together with the xerographic plate 3 to its initial position. In xerographic technology, a distinction is made between two known types of electrostatic images developed, i.e., line images and halftone images. The device according to the invention enables the development of both types of images. To develop line images, the ribbon 41 is raised from the surface of the xerographic plate 3 by a distance of about 5 mm to about 10 mm by means of a manually operated lever located outside the device. To develop halftone images by manually rotating a lever located outside the device, the ribbon 41 is fixed at a distance of about 1.5 mm to about 2 mm parallel to the surface of the xerographic plate 3. 6 During the electrostatic image development process, when the developing device is tilted appropriately, the tape drive 41 is activated by means of the motor 48, which causes the tape 41 to be rewinded from the drum 43 onto the drum 42. After the appropriate amount of the developing mixture 32 has flowed from the reservoir 31 into the container 38, a special cam coupled with the axis id by means of a gear. Then, after the developing device is tilted in the opposite direction, while the developing mixture 32 is flowing from the container 38 into the reservoir 31, the tape drive 41 is activated in the opposite direction by means of the appropriate cam 69. At this time, the tape 11 is rewinded from the drum 42 onto the drum 43. After After the developing mixture 32 has flowed into the container 31, a special cam coupled to the drum axis 43 switches off the tape drive 41. The device according to the invention uses a xerographic plate without a light barrier, which prevents accidental damage to the photo-semiconductive layer that occurs when using a light barrier. The device according to the invention also enables the correct development of halftone images.
