1 przedstawia schemat ogólny urzadzenia ba¬ dawczego, a fig. 2 — blokowy schemat elektrycz¬ ny ukladu pomiarowo-odczytowego. Waclaw Cybulski, mgr Kazimierz Lebecki, mgr Marian Madeja, mgr Jan Sliz Patent owner: Central Mining Institute, Katowice (Poland) Device for measuring the volatility of stone dust • The subject of the invention is a device for measuring the volatility of stone dust, used in hard coal mining as protection against coal dust explosions. This device can also be used to test the volatility of other dusts, e.g. coal. The devices used so far to assess dust volatility are primitive, and their indications are subjective. These methods are based on assessing the looseness of the dust by touch and visually assessing its ability to be blown into a cloud, as well as assessing the diameter of a dust sample scattered after falling from a certain height. The Schuhknecht and Kuntz device is also known, based on measuring the amount of dust removed from a sample by prolonged exposure to a very low-velocity air stream compared to the velocity of the air carrying the dust during an actual coal dust explosion. This makes the results obtained by this method unreliable due to changes in dust moisture during the measurement and the dependence of its mass loss on its fractional composition. The results obtained using the devices described above are unique. The aim of the invention is to measure the volatility of stone dust, free from the disadvantages of subjective evaluation of results and to achieve their repeatability. This aim was achieved by constructing a device according to the invention, which consists of a closed measuring chamber, equipped with a nozzle and a plate for placing the tested dust sample, set at an angle of 165° to the nozzle axis, a system supplying the nozzle with a pulsed gas stream, and a photoelectric measuring and reading system, wherein the nozzle supply system consists of a tank containing compressed gas, a pressure reducer, a pressure dosing chamber, and a quick-acting valve feeding a dose of gas from the pressure chamber to the nozzle. The pressure chamber is continuously supplied with gas through a reducer from a reservoir at a predetermined pressure. A photoelectric measuring and reading system is built into the measuring chamber so that the dust cloud, generated by the action of a gas pulse from the nozzle on the dust sample on the plate, is located between the light source, which includes a light bulb, and the light receiver, which includes a photoresistor. The dust concentration in the field of view is measured by an RC differentiator, which includes a microammeter integrated in the circuit. Furthermore, the photoelectric system is equipped with regulating and compensating sets for the measuring circuit. The device according to the invention does not have the disadvantages discussed. Dust volatility is defined as the ability of dust to be lifted into a cloud by a gas pulse of constant energy and a short, known duration. This volatility is an essential parameter for assessing the ability of stone dust to transition into a dispersed phase in air, which occurs after the passage of the blast wave during a coal dust explosion, and thus to extinguish the explosion. In the device according to the invention, dust volatility is measured while the dust is lifted by a short-duration pressure pulse at a speed selected to provide a large safety margin compared to the minimum velocity of the blast wave. The short duration of the pulse also ensures that the dust maintains constant moisture content and reduces the influence of its fractional composition on lifting. By using photoelectric measurement of dust concentration, the volatility value is made independent of the evaluator's subjectiveness, which ensures comparability of results. The subject of the invention is presented in an exemplary embodiment in the drawing, where Fig. 1 shows a general diagram of the testing device, and Fig. 2 — a block diagram of the measuring and reading system. The device consists of a tank containing compressed gas, which is connected by a reducer 2 to a pressure chamber 3 filled with compressed gas at an overpressure of pn = 0.5 atm. Chamber 3 is provided with a manometer 4 to control the pressure therein. A quick-acting valve 5 connects chamber 3 with measuring chamber 6, in which A pulsed gas stream with a pressure of 0.5 atm is formed by nozzle 7. The diameter of nozzle 7 is selected so that the total gas flow from chamber 3 occurs in 0.1 s. A dust sample weighing 3 to 4 g is placed on plate 8, the plane of which forms an angle of 165° with the nozzle axis. The dust concentration in the lifted cloud is measured by a photoelectric system mounted on the walls of measuring chamber 6. A light source in the form of a tube containing an illuminating bulb 9 and an optical system ensuring the parallelism of the light beam are built on one side, while a photoresistor, which is the receiver of light passing through the dust cloud, is placed on the other side of the chamber. 6. The photoresistor 10 is shunted by a capacitor 11 and a resistor 12, which form an RC differential circuit. This circuit includes a readout microammeter 13 for measuring current, as well as resistors 14, 15, and 16 for regulating and compensating the circuit before and after measurement. The circuit is powered by two rectifiers 17 and 18, so that rectifier 17 powers the photoresistor, and rectifier 18 generates a compensating voltage. The rectifiers convert the alternating voltage received from a transistor converter 19, powered by a battery 20. The electrical circuit has a logarithmic current and voltage characteristic, which, given the exponential relationship between light absorption and dust concentration in the The gas provides linear readings of the device. The device operates as follows. To assess volatility, a dust sample of a determined volume should be poured onto plate 8 placed in measurement chamber 6. Then, after checking the system compensation, valve 5 between pressure chamber 3 and measurement chamber 6 is opened and the current value on microammeter 13 is read, or after appropriate scaling, the dust concentration in the cloud is read directly. The result of this measurement, divided by the light absorption cross-section, measured by known methods, determines the dust volatility. The cross-section is taken into account to compensate for differences in the size of the grain surfaces in different dusts. The use of the device will allow for the establishment of a standard for the minimum permissible volatility of limestone dust found in explosion barriers in mine workings and objectively assess the volatility of this dust. This will allow for purposeful and justified periodic dust replacement and prevent premature removal of good limestone dust and retention of less valuable dust.
