Description

Wedlug niniejszego wynalazku urzadzenie zawiera stylus do analizowania arkusza zapisowego celem otrzymania zadanej kopii dokumentu, przy czym wspomniany stylus .posiada szereg elektrod przesu¬ wajacych sie wzdluz arkusza zapisowego i wytwa¬ rzajacych znaki w wyniku doprowadzanych do nich sygnalów elektrycznych; urzadzenie kodujace do wytwarzania tych sygnalów w wyniku dostarczo¬ nych informacji, obejmujace pierwsze urzadzenie do selektywnego zasilania przynamniej niektórych spo¬ sród wspomnianych elektrod celem wydrukowania znaku sposobem znakowym oraz drugie urzadzenie do selektywnego zasilania co najmniej jednej z wspomnianych elektrod celem wydrukowania co najmniej jednej linii informacji sposobem facsi- mile. 3 — czescio¬ wo schemat blokowy, czesciowo aksonometryczny, przedstawiajacy zasady i cechy wynalazku. Celem utworze¬ nia litery „F" podczas przesuwania zestawu stylu- sów w polozeniu H2 zasila sie tylko pionowe stylusy VI i V4, podobnie w polozeniu H3. Jezeli do przekazywania znaków pisarskich stosuje sie pole punktowe piec razy siedem, to jed¬ noczesne analizowanie siedmiu linii informacji zna¬ kowej dokonuje sie znacznie szybciej, niz w przy¬ padku indywidualnego analizowania kazdej linii znakowej oddzielnie. Wydajnosci przekazywania i magazynowania danych sa funkcja uzytego kodu.W przypadku danych cyfrowych stosuje sie kod dwójkowy do opisywania znaków, podczas gdy w sposobie facsimile opisuje sie kazdy element zawar¬ ty na stronie. Wracajac do fig. Rysunek uproszczono celem 55 umozliwienia latwego zrozumienia zasad i cech cha¬ rakterystycznych wynalazku. Inna odmiana zestawu stylu¬ sów 10 moze byc staly zestaw, gdzie napiecie sygna¬ lowe doprowadza sie do pary elektrod metalowych. Nr 2.893.810 wydany B. F. Millerowi dnia 7 lipca 1959 roku.Przy opisie fig. 3 wspomniano o papierze 20 slu¬ zacym do wykonania na nim odebranej kopii ory¬ ginalnego dokumentu. Papier taki moze byc typu elektrolitycznego, przy którym napiecie przylozone do stylusów wywoluje zmiany chemiczne w powloce papieru, powodujace uwidocznienie drukowanych informacji. Dalej papier moze byc typu elektrooporowego, gdzie prad doprowadza¬ ny do stylusa przeplywa przez papier przepalajac powloke powierzchniowa w stopniu proporcjonal¬ nym do ilosci pradu. Wracajac do fig. 3, jezeli stylus zawiera dziesiec oddzielonych elementów, to przy sposobie facsimile papier jest nieruchomy podczas dokonywania przez stylus dziesieciu skoków z kolejnym lub grupowym wybieraniem jego poszczególnych elementów.W ten sposób drukuje sie dziesiec linii informacji typu facsimile, a po ich zakonczeniu papier przesu¬ wa sie na przyklad o 0,1 cala i ponownie wybiera sie pierwszy element stylusa do nastepnej linii.W chwili przesuniecia papieru informacja kodowa musi wskazac, jaki rodzaj dzialania nastapi w dal¬ szym ciagu. Przy przekazywaniu danych typu zna¬ kowego odnosne dane kieruje sie do urzadzenia ko¬ dowego 30, uzyskujac wynik na polu punktowym piec razy siedem lub innym. Mozna przewidziec do¬ datkowe zabezpieczenia takie, jak nieparzystosc w przypadku drukowania znaków pisarskich i parzy¬ stosc w przypadku informacji typu facsimile. A zatem, jakkolwiek wynalazek opi¬ sano w oparciu o okreslona odmiane wykonania, osoby zorientowane w temacie pojma, ze moga w 15 nim byc czynione zmiany i wprowadzane elementy zastepcze bez naruszania wlasciwej idei i zakresu wynalazku. Ponadto celem dostosowania do szcze¬ gólnych warunków pracy mozna dokonac wielu mo¬ dyfikacji bez odbiegania od podstawowych zasad 20 wynalazku. PL PL PL PLPriority: 18/09/1969 United States of America Application announced: 10/04/1973 Patent description published: 20/12/1974 72943 KI. 15k,7/05 MKP B41m 3/00 Inventors: Edward H. Nutter, Alfred I. Moretti Provisional patent holder: Xerox Corporation, Rochester (United States of America) Printing method and apparatus for using the method The invention relates to a printing method and an apparatus for using the method. Many methods of transmitting information from one location to another are known. One such method is the facsimile system, in which the transmitted document is analyzed in a transmitter, the information contained in the document is converted into electrical signals, and these signals are transmitted to a remote location, where, thanks to the use of a facsimile receiver, an exact copy of the original document is reproduced. A modern facsimile device can transmit any type of graphic or printed information. Such a device analyzes lines one at a time, and the printing device prints them in order. Another type of data transmission is the character system, in which characters are printed individually at the remote location, similar to a conventional typewriter, dot reproduction on an oscilloscope tube, and so on. The above-mentioned system of character transmission has advantages over the facsimile system. For example, typewritten text can generally be transmitted in a time many times shorter than it would take with the facsimile system under the same transmission conditions. However, the main disadvantage of the character-based system of data transmission is that it does not allow the transmission of graphic images. Such images include, for example, maps, plans, charts, and so on. Basic character systems and facsimile are at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of information transmission time. Transmission with the facsimile system is relatively slow due to line-by-line analysis, whereas character-based systems are relatively fast because they allow the transmission of an entire character at once. However, there is a need to combine the advantages of a character transmitter, with its short transmission time, with a facsimile system, which allows for the transmission of graphical information. The facsimile system allows for the transmission of a document containing both graphical and character information, but the transmission time is independent of the amount or type of information contained on the page. It is therefore all the more clear that a system having the features of both compared systems would constitute an interesting and economical combination of them. The aim of the invention is to develop an improved method of transmitting information data, to increase the efficiency of the data transmission system for both character and facsimile information, to develop a system for transmitting character and facsimile information having the advantages of both the mentioned systems, and to develop a device for printing character information in one way and facsimile information in another. According to the present invention, the device comprises a stylus for analyzing a recording sheet in order to obtain a desired copy of a document, said stylus having a series of electrodes moving along the recording sheet and generating characters as a result of electrical signals supplied thereto; an encoding device for generating said signals as a result of the supplied information, comprising a first device for selectively energizing at least some of said electrodes to print a character in a character manner and a second device for selectively energizing at least one of said electrodes to print at least one line of information in a facsimile manner. Such a stylus assembly would include a series of electrodes moving in parallel across a received copy of the document. In a character manner, some or all of the electrodes would be selectively energized in accordance with the character to be printed. In the facsimile method, continuous movement across the same part of the document would be effected, with only one electrode being energized at a time, each being energized in turn until all of them were energized and the document was moved to the next working position. The invention is illustrated in an example embodiment in the drawing, where Fig. 1 is a drawing of information printed using a stylus set in accordance with the method of the invention; Fig. 2 is a typical drawing of a resulting copy of a document containing both character and graphic information; Fig. 3 — Partly a block diagram, partly an axonometric diagram, illustrating the principles and features of the invention. The drawings show a character printer employing an analyzing electrode assembly comprising a series of electrodes arranged along an endless belt driven by pulleys, which enables the movable electrodes to be sequentially moved across a recording sheet. Each electrode has a series of finger elements that slide along the paper and respond to electrical pulses applied to them to produce dotted characters on the sheet. One type of electrode assembly comprises a one-seven stylus assembly which draws seven parallel lines as it moves across the sheet. Referring to Fig. 1, the stylus electrodes 10, shown schematically as triangles in the drawing, move horizontally across the document and leave a dot on the sheet when energized. The vertical characters VI to V7, shown in Fig. 1, are printed according to the information supplied to the electrode assembly. As the latter is moved across the sheet, the stylus assembly is energized five times per character, resulting in a five-seven dot field for each character. The letter "F" in Fig. 1 shows that during the first (counting in the horizontal direction) position HI, all vertical electrodes VI to V7 are energized. To create the letter "F" as the stylus assembly is moved In position H2, only the vertical styluses VI and V4 are fed, and similarly in position H3. In each of the two remaining positions H4 and H5, only the vertical stylus VI is fed. In this way, any character can be printed on a document by means of selective feeding of the styluses 10 in Fig. 1. To implement the facsimile method, the same styluses working across a similar recording sheet can be used. The set of styluses is moved across the sheet as many times as there are vertical styluses before the sheet is moved, but only one stylus is fed at a given moment. Thus, during the first movement across the page, the vertical stylus VI is selectively fed, during the second movement, the stylus V2, and so on up to the stylus V7. After the last line has passed through the stylus V7, the paper can be moved vertically to be placed under the paper. Styli of the next blank section can be offset, or the stylus set itself can be tilted to achieve a relative shift. However, with such a stylus set, it is usually more effective to move the paper vertically after printing a group of characters or graphic information. The stylus set shown schematically in Fig. 1 has three additional vertical styluses. In this particular application, the first seven are used for printing characters, while all ten are used for the facsimile method. However, in this variant, the stylus and paper advance is constant for each of the two methods. The use of ten styluses spaced vertically in a set automatically creates a spacing effect when printing characters, namely, with each paper advance following the printing of the entire analyzed line, the band corresponding to the three lower styluses does not The three lower styluses in Fig. 1 are shown as not being applicable to the character method, but it is obvious that these three styluses could also be the three upper styluses or form some other combination, which would still fall within the scope of the present invention. If a greater resolving power than that provided by ten vertically spaced styluses is desired, the arrangement of the styluses in the set can be changed from the vertical arrangement shown in Fig. 1 to a zigzag or diagonal arrangement, and this arrangement would still fall within the scope of the present invention. The five times seven dot field and the seven or ten selectively powered styluses should be understood as exemplary only, as any combination of styluses and character codes, such as ASCII, may be used. Bandot, and so on. The advantages of the solution discussed above are apparent from Fig. 2. It is often requested that the transmitted data contain both character and facsimile information. However, as explained above, earlier data printers used either character reproduction or facsimile printing, and none of them allows for both. Fig. 2 shows a weather map that can be transmitted from one location to another along with information expressed in characters. Although it is obvious that the entire document can be transmitted by facsimile, the combination of character and facsimile ensures much faster data transmission. If characters are used for transmitting If a dot field of five times seven is used, then the simultaneous analysis of seven lines of character information is performed much faster than if each character line were analyzed individually. Data transmission and storage efficiency is a function of the code used. In the case of digital data, a binary code is used to describe characters, while in the facsimile method, each element contained on the page is described. Assuming that 64 characters are to be distinguished in the character method, six-bit characters would normally be required. If a dot field of five times seven is to be printed for each digital character, then lines of 100 characters can be transmitted or described using 600 bits. Assuming a resolution of 100 lines/inch, the same line of 100 characters would require 5950 bits in the facsimile method, which means an increase in tenfold. For the facsimile method, the message contained in the seven lines of the original copy is indifferent, while the digital system is sensitive to the number of characters per line. A number of 100 characters per line was assumed, for example, to obtain an element of 0.010 inches in both methods of operation. A full page of character information (100 characters per line, 8 lines/inch) can be printed using the stylus set according to the present invention, at a speed of, say, 600 characters per second, in 18 seconds. This time already includes 3 seconds for the 88 paper feeds required for an 11-inch document at 30 milliseconds per feed. At the same stylus speed, a page of graphic information or facsimile can be printed in 160 seconds. The paper feed in the facsimile method is the same as discussed above for the digital method. Hence, if, using the same device, a full page of character-type information can be printed in, for example, 18 seconds and a full page of facsimile information in 160 seconds, then the transfer time for mixed information, i.e., character-facsimile, will be intermediate between the above, and its length will depend on the ratio of the amount of character-type information to the amount of facsimile information that must be printed in total on a standard 8v2 x 11-inch sheet. Returning to Fig. 2, at the top of page 20, character-type information 22 will be printed, occupying about one-third of the sheet, at a speed of 18 seconds per page. Weather map 24 will be printed facsimile at a speed of 160 seconds per page. On the rest of the page until its end, character-type information 26 will be printed at a speed of 18 seconds per page. As can be seen, the combination of printing by both methods, i.e. character and facsimile, combines the advantages of both methods and ensures faster transfer of information, or the transfer of a larger amount of information 5 in a given unit of time. Fig. 3 shows a proposed system based on the principles of the present invention. The encoding device 30 receives information via a transmission line through a modulator-demodulator 32 from a remote facsimile or calculating device 10, from a magnetic tape or disc 34, from a local television camera 36 or from a keyboard 38. The device 30 decodes the information supplied to it and passes it on to the stylus assembly 10 in the recording device 12. The information supplied to the device 30 is contain the necessary data to instruct this device in the nature of information (character or facsimile). The code device may include a "series-to-parallel" converter as well as special logic and timing circuits for generating the electric signals that power the styluses. A control device 40 for starting a motor 42 is coupled to the device 30, which provides the necessary drive for the recording device 12. In the illustrated embodiment, the motor 42 causes the stylus assembly to move across the sheet 20 in the indicated direction by means of pulleys 44 and 46. The motor 42 is also coupled to rollers 48 and 50 for advancing the sheet 20. Depending on the mode of operation, the motor 42 moves the paper 20 in front of the sheet 20. stylus set 10 via various gear or clutch arrangements under the control of the controller 40. In the character method, the motor 42 advances the sheet 20 to the next available space after each pass of the stylus set 10. In the facsimile method, the motor advances the sheet to the next analysis area after every ten passes, if that is the number of styluses in the set 10. This method enables the same printing mechanism 40 to be used for both character and facsimile printing without the need for any changes to select one or the other. The mode of operation is selected electronically for the 45 line groups of a given document under the influence of appropriate control signals preceding code words received by the code device 30. The review device 41 can be used for visual inspection of the information to be printed; it may comprise, for example, an oscilloscope tube. In Fig. 3, only one set of styluses 10 is shown attached to a belt 45 and coupled to a code device 30. The drawing has been simplified to enable a clear understanding of the principles and characteristics of the invention. In fact, the set of styluses 10 is coupled to the device 30, for example, by means of an arrangement of plates or blades on a stationary electrode element 60, which has straight parallel surfaces in contact with the other side of the set 10 and extending along its travel path. Another variation of the set of styluses 10 may be a fixed set, where a signal voltage is applied to a pair of metal electrodes 65 arranged on opposite sides of electrochemical paper. One electrode is in the form of a knife-edge rod extending across the paper and in contact with it. The second electrode is arranged to intersect the first and moves so that the point of their intersection moves across the paper at the same speed as the document or drawing is analyzed or characters are transmitted on the transmitting side. Regarding this solution, we refer to U.S. Patent No. 2,893,810 issued to B. F. Miller on July 7, 1959. In the description of Fig. 3, mention is made of paper 20 for making a received copy of the original document. Such paper may be of the electrolytic type, in which a voltage applied to the stylus induces chemical changes in the paper coating, making the printed image visible. printed information. An electrographic variant of this system can also be used, where the stylus imparts an electrostatic charge to the paper, which can then be developed by any known electrographic or xerographic method to make the writing visible. Furthermore, the paper can be of the electro-resistance type, where the current supplied to the stylus flows through the paper, burning through the surface coating to a degree proportional to the amount of current. To implement the principles of the present invention, any of the above or another method can be used. Returning to Fig. 3, if the stylus contains ten separate elements, then in the facsimile method, the paper is stationary while the stylus makes ten strokes with the subsequent or group selection of its individual elements. In this way, ten lines of facsimile information are printed, and after these lines are completed, the paper is advanced, for example. by 0.1 inch and the first stylus element is reselected for the next line. When the paper is fed, the code information must indicate what action will occur next. When character data is transferred, the relevant data is sent to the code device 30, obtaining the result on a five times seven dot field or another. Additional safeguards can be provided, such as odd parity for printing characters and even parity for facsimile information. After the line is completed, the next control code signal is transmitted. If the printing of characters is to be followed by facsimile information, ten more operating characters are made before the paper is fed again. During this time, the printing device 12 waits for the next instruction for printing character or facsimile information. The vibration problem encountered in facsimile transmission, can be reduced by applying a timing principle to the printing device 12. The set of styluses then contains a time track referenced to the motor collector 42. In this way, each line is referenced to the same physical point on the sheet of printed copy 20. This measure radically reduces the effect of stylus speed variations on the received copy. The above describes an apparatus for efficiently printing character and facsimile type information on a received document. Although the invention has been described on the basis of a five times seven character code with specific parameters, it is obvious that any type of code and associated transfer speed can be used therein while still remaining within the scope of the principles of the present invention. Next, for the facsimile method, a set of styluses containing ten styluses is described, but one would be wise to Anyone familiar with these topics will realize that more or fewer of these can be used within the principles of the invention. Therefore, although the invention has been described with reference to a specific embodiment, those skilled in the art will understand that changes and substitutions can be made therein without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention. Furthermore, many modifications can be made to adapt to specific operating conditions without departing from the basic principles of the invention. PL PL PL PL
