Abstract

The present invention relates to an instrument to be used in operating theatres, specifically adapted as an elevator/retractor of the thoracic vertebrae in operations on the coronary arteries. The surgical instrument for use as a thoracic elevator and retractor is made up of five elements: fixed shaft with curved rack rod 1 and 5; mobile shaft with slide block 2; handle with articulated grip 6 which is applied in the slide block, has a cone gear which engages in the rack and serves to open or close the instrument; a square jaw 3 for application in the fixed shaft, and an in-line jaw 4 for application in the mobile shaft. The thoracic elevator allows the position of the jaws 3 and 4 to be exchanged and in this way is converted into a retractor for various uses in surgery. The five elements which make up this instrument are manufactured without frosting, screws, nuts or welding and are assembled or dismantled without the use of secondary tools.
