Abstract

Holder for supporting an aerosol spray cartridge during inhalation of a medicant allows the aerosol to discharge via a mouth-piece incorporating a flap valve to automatically increases the back pressure during inhalation. The flap valve includes an integral or ancillary spring to allow air to pass alongside the cartridge into the mouthpiece until a predetermined level of suction is applied by the user, whereupon the valve chokes off the ancillary airflow substantially or totally except for a narrow clearance concentric with the outlet nozzle fitted to the aerosol cartridge. The valve promptly opens during exhalation, to vent the mouthpiece. Used esp. for administering anticongestants etc., without being disturbingly noisy or requiring delicate manipulation by the user to alternate between inhalation and exhalation. The integral mouth-piece may accept an extension tube. Pref. the walls of the aerosol cartridge chamber are ribbed to ensure clearance for ventilation past the cartridge.
