Abstract

Cyano-bacterium Spirulina platensis (Gomont) Geitler culture is prepd. by a semi-continuous method to produce a protein-rich biomas also contg. other cpds for food or pharmaceutical use. The bacteria are propagated in a vessel on Zarrouk nutritive medium which is inoculated with alfal suspension in an exponential growth phase. The suspension height is 15-20 cms. The suspension is homogenised by compressed air bubbles or other mechanical agitaiton. The system establishes itself when it extinguishes the optical density of 1 and 1.2 units of extinction. The culture is maintained at a constant (optimum growth rate at the same biomass concn. level, and constant rate of reproduction by several in-process harvests. The suspension vol. is kept. at constant level, and essential nutrients are added periodically.
