Abstract

A detector for detection of ionizing radiation comprises a substantially planar cathode (31; 71) and anode (33; 61), respectively; an ionizable substance (35) arranged between the cathode and anode; a radiation entrance arranged such that radiation (37) from a radiation source (39) can enter the detector and pass through the cathode, for ionizing the ionizable substance; and a read-out arrangement (33) for detection of electrons created during ionization of the ionizable substance, and subsequently drifted towards the anode. The detector is characterized in that the substantially planar cathode and anode, respectively, are patterned (41, 45; 81) and capable of being set to different voltages such that an electrical field within the ionizable substance can be obtained, whose field lines (49) are pointing towards the radiation source, for drifting electrons created during ionization of the ionizable substance in parallel with the field lines towards the anode.
