A machine for washing clothes comprises an impeller 3 mounted at the bottom of the tub and driven by a motor 11 mounted above the tub. The impeller is mounted on a removable plate 5 and driven from drive shaft 8 by an engaging pinion 7 or friction wheel. The top of shaft 8 is releasably coupled to the motor drive shaft 10. The motor casing 12 can thereby be removed and inverted to close the tub again with the motor housed substantially within the tub. The top closure is completed by a lid 28 having tongues engaging the casing 12, and which lies above the shaft 8 when the motor is housed. The liner may be separated from the impeller by a removable grid.
