Abstract
Description
J .. 500 039 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 Attempts have been made to deal with the resilience phenomenon by plasticizing (softening) the wood before compaction. This has been done by treatment with mainly ammonia, which has a very good ability to also soften the lignin in the wood. The method has been applied in, among other places, the Soviet Union, where a pilot plant has been built in Riga. The disadvantage of this process is the technical / environmental difficulties that the handling of concentrated ammonia solutions entails and that the wood is darkened.
Uppfinningen behöver inte heller medföra något extra steg för härdning av ovannämnda kemikalie, då härdningen enligt en speciellt föredragen ut- föringsform av uppfinningen sker i samband med en varmkompri- mering av trämaterialet.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention, it has been found that the disadvantages or shortcomings mentioned above can be eliminated or at least substantially reduced in a surprisingly simple manner. This is achieved by using a new type of chemical in these contexts, with which the wood is impregnated, namely a chemical capable of hardening and thereby locking the wood in a compressed state. The chemical used according to the invention does not have to cause any special technical or environmental difficulties in handling, since one can choose a chemical which is water-soluble and one can consequently work with purely water-based systems. The invention also does not have to involve any extra step for curing the above-mentioned chemical, as the curing according to a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention takes place in connection with a hot compression of the wood material.
More specifically, the process of the invention is characterized in that the wood is impregnated with a curable monomer or prepolymer and that during or after the compaction step the impregnated wood is subjected to such curing conditions that the monomer hardens out and locks the wood in a compressed state.
The impregnation of the wood is carried out in practice suitably before the compaction, as otherwise it can be difficult to get the impregnation chemical to penetrate into the wood, at least at higher degrees of compaction. At lower compaction rates, one could theoretically imagine impregnation at a later stage of the process, e.g. after the compression, with a certain improvement of the properties as a result, so that even such an alternative falls within the scope of the invention. .w 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 .3 503 G3 For the curing step, this preferably takes place in connection with the compression itself, as an additional treatment step is thereby avoided. Said preferred embodiments using fold form are of particular interest in thermosetting monomers or prepolymers, as will be elucidated more below, since the desired curing can only be achieved by a hot compression. The prerequisite here is that the hot compression is carried out at such a high temperature that the polymerization or curing process starts.
A preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention thus means that the impregnation is carried out with a thermosetting monomer or prepolymer and that the compression step is carried out at such an elevated temperature that the monomer or prepolymer is thermoset. However, even in such a case, cold pressing of the wood and subsequent heating, e.g. at a later hot gluing of the wood to a substrate.
As for the curable monomer or pre-polymer, it should be of this kind, i.e. have such a size or configuration that it can penetrate the cell wall of the wood material.
Härigenom uppnår man nämligen förutom en inre låsningseffekt, vilken medför minskad àterfjädring, ökad hårdhet utöver den rena komprimeringseffekten, dvs. även en förstyvningseffekt. In this way, in addition to an internal locking effect, which results in reduced resilience, increased hardness is achieved in addition to the pure compression effect, ie. also a stiffening effect.
An especially preferred group of curable monomers or prepolymers for use in the process of the present invention are aminoplast monomers or prepolymers, as within this group of materials are those which provide extremely good locking of the compressed state of the wood and in addition a stiffening effect. Aminoplast has the usual meaning here, namely based on a resin of an amine, especially melamine or urea, and an aldehyde, especially formaldehyde. Urea-based systems are particularly interesting, partly due to the fact that, in addition to the above-mentioned combination of effects, they produce uncoloured hardened products.
Monomers and prepolymers of the methylol type have been found to work very well in the process according to the invention, the said terms being understood to mean compounds which contain or during the process form one or more methylol groups, such as mono-, di- and trimethylol compounds. Compounds of this kind 500 039 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 g - (CH 2) n -O-CH 2 OH, where n e.g. is 1-6 "l goes in textile chemistry under the name cross-forming chemicals on N-methylol base and this group of compounds are of particular interest according to the invention. An especially preferred monomer according to the invention is dimethylol urea, e.g. the product marketed by BASF under the trade name Kaurit S. Another concrete example of a useful thermoset monomer is the product Fixapret CPN (BASF), ethylene urea. Other examples of compounds within this group which are a product of the dimethylol dihydroxy type are dimethoxymethylurea, dimethylolethylene urea, dimethylolpropylene urea, dimethylol-4-methoxy-5,5-dimethylpropylene urea, dimethylol-5-hydroxypropylene urea and dimethoxime. In addition, non-amine type or non-N-methyl-type crosslinkers are also conceivable, such as, for example, dimethylol alkanediol- [hOCH 2 -O- and sulfonium-Betaine.
In addition, for the monomer or pre-polymer, it is combined in a manner known per se, from the beginning or at a later stage, with conventional hardeners or catalysts, e.g. acid.
As indicated above, the process according to the invention need not entail any technical or environmental difficulties, since the impregnation can be carried out at least with the above-mentioned particularly preferred chemicals in an aqueous system, i.e. with an aqueous solution of the monomer or pre-polymer in question. In other words, the monomer or pre-polymer is also selected depending on its solubility in water.
Optimal results are generally achieved in the range 2-10%, especially 4-8%, calculated as weight percent monomer or prepolymer of the aqueous solution, so that the chemical in question should at least be able to dissolve to a value within said range. However, the invention is not limited to the said concentrations, as a suitable value may be selected from case to case, ie. after using chemical and desired effect. A certain effect is thus achieved already at very low concentrations, and correspondingly further improvement of the effect can be achieved in some cases at higher concentrations, e.g. up to 20% by weight, which improvement may, however, be weighed against the increased chemical costs. For the impregnation step in the process according to the invention, this can be carried out in accordance with conventional technology in connection with impregnations, whereby vacuum-pressure impregnation is preferred, as this method generally gives the most effective results.
With regard to the process, it can also be added that, as in other known impregnation methods, it is usually suitable to carry out a drying step at a slightly elevated temperature after the impregnation itself, before the wood material is fed into the press.
Finally, in the case of compression, it is of course possible to select the degree of compression in accordance with principles known per se and depending on the desired effect in the method according to the invention.
The invention will now be illustrated in more detail by certain embodiments with respect to some embodiments of the method according to the invention.
