Abstract

In a method and an apparatus, the acoustic emission signal is used to determine the roundness of a workpiece. The cutting variation is monitored by sampling the acoustic emission signal. The cutting variation is then correlated, preferably in the frequency domain, to the workpiece roundness. By using such a method there is no need to perform post-grinding measurements in order to determine the roundness error of the ground workpiece.

Description

516 '954 2. workpiece by the amplitude variation that a contact point on the workpiece will feel when the workpiece is rotated one revolution. This can be described by the following example.

Antag att ett arbetsstycke efter en avslutad operation har en maximal radievariation på ungefär 4 um och den form som visas i figur l.Assume that a workpiece after a completed operation has a maximum radius variation of approximately 4 μm and the shape shown in Figure 1.

The workpiece is measured to find out if the requirement for a specific maximum ovality is met. These variations can be expressed if a displacement variation is measured over the circumference of the workpiece.

Figure 2 shows an ideal curve where the amplitude variation (pm) is measured over one revolution.

The signal is normally divided by Fourier technology into its frequency components with corresponding amplitudes. It is now possible to express the roundness error as separate lobes with the possibility of comparing the displacement of each lobe (ovality, three corners, etc.) by the measured amplitude.

In the example above, you can clearly see ovality with a superimposed triangular lobe. The reality is more complicated than this and different techniques are applied to take into account measurement errors and effects of different filter techniques. It is also important to compensate for the characteristics of different sensors.

These elastic load waves are the result of rapid release of stress energy in a material due to internal structural rearrangements. The load waves are transmitted and propagated by the material and / or other materials connected to the AE source, which ultimately results in a displacement of the surface where a sensor is mounted. The displacement of the surface is transmitted to an electrical signal by means of, for example, a piezoelectric transducer. The acoustic emission signal is generated in the deformation zone of the cutting process, thereby providing an opportunity to investigate different steps in the process. The frequencies of the signal depend on the working materials and the load conditions, and range from the conventional acoustic range to MHz.

However, prior art does not show any technique for quantifying or determining roundness errors with the possibility of real-time evaluations. A ground workpiece must instead be removed from the grinder to measure the roundness error. This is of course undesirable and costly.

OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to overcome the problems described above and to provide a method and apparatus by which the roundness of a workpiece can be determined in real time without measurements having to be made on the workpiece after grinding to determine roundness errors.

This object and others are achieved by a method in which the acoustic emission signal is used to determine the roundness of a workpiece. The cutting variation is monitored by sampling the acoustic emission signal. The cutting variation corresponds to the roundness of the workpiece, preferably in the frequency domain.

By using such a technique, it is not necessary to perform measurements after grinding to determine roundness errors of the ground workpiece.

The use of the method and the device means that the machine can start producing workpieces of a certain quality, with a high probability of being within tolerances before traditional measurements after grinding have confirmed the quality of the workpiece. High production volume can thus save time. ,, «U» 516 954 'in the start-up phase for a new type of workpiece when setting up the machine tool, since the waiting time from a measuring department can be reduced or eliminated.

Fig. 3 is a general view of a system for determining the roundness of a workpiece, Fig. 4 is a flow chart illustrating the steps performed in the signal processor shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an example of a polar diagram as a result of the process illustrated in Fig. 4, Fig. 6 illustrates a spectrum of the polar diagram according to Fig. 5.

BESKRIVNING Av FÖREDRAGNA UTFöRINGsFoRMER I fig. Datorn 16 är företrädesvis förbunden med något lämpligt utgångsmedel, såsom en skrivare eller en skärm (ej visat).DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Fig. 3 shows a general view of a system 10 for determining the roundness of a rotating workpiece 20. The system 10 includes a sensor 12, a digital signal processor (DSP) 14, and a computer 16. The computer 16 is preferably connected to any suitable starting material, such as a printer or monitor (not shown).

The sensor 12 is located at a suitable location for sensing acoustic emission signals from a workpiece being ground.

The position of the acoustic emission sensor 12 will affect the amplitude but not the shape of the obtained signal. A suitable location for the sensor may be at the spindle of the workpiece.

In addition, a bandpass filter should preferably be used if vibration and noise are to be removed from the machine. For example, a bandpass filter between 50 and 100 KHz can be used.

In general, emissions up to the order of megaherz are generated by the plastic deformation during the cutting process for the workpiece. The sensor is preferably optimized to provide a characteristic as distinct as possible in the frequency window of the hardware used for signal processing.

I fig. I ett steg 401 amplitudmoduleras först signalen frän sensorn och kvadratroten ur kvadratmedelvärdet för den akustiska emissionssignalen (AEmß-värdet) utvärderas i steg 403.Fig. 4 shows a flow chart of the process steps performed in the system shown in Fig. 3, to determine the roundness of a workpiece. In a step 401, the signal from the sensor is first amplitude modulated and the square root of the square mean value of the acoustic emission signal (AEmß value) is evaluated in step 403.

The process information is thereby carried by the emission range above the affecting vibration range (0-20 KHz), since the high frequency range of the acoustic emission signal (AE signal) is not affected by low frequency vibrations from variations in the cutting force in the grinding zone when transmitting from the machine tool structure.

Den bildade AE-signalenveloppen innehåller vanligtvis användbar processinformation från 0-1000 Hz.The variations of the cutting force are of course strongly affected by the vibration state of the machine tool and vice versa. In this way, the vibrations that affect the grinding zone can be studied with the acoustic emission technology. In a step 405, an envelope is formed for this high frequency signal which is analyzed as an analog RMS signal. The generated AE signal envelope usually contains useful process information from 0-1000 Hz.

The generated analog envelope signal is converted from analog to digital (A / D) in a step 407, and fed to the digital signal processor (DSP). In step 409, the DSP extracts frames having an appropriate number of samples, and calculates a power spectrum from the sampled frames in a step 411. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of power spectra may be calculated, calculating an average power spectrum.

In a step 413, the energy distribution in the frequency domain is then evaluated. Thus, a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of the digital signal (AEmß) is performed, preferably using a fast Fourier transform (FFT).

Därefter härleds en energimatris i ett steg 415. Detta utförs i två delsteg: Först härleds ekvation (1) för det första varvet hos arbetsstycket (n=l): em,=,4-snfl2-zvj'-Û-+A1-fin(2-n-fl-b)+.n (1) För det andra och efterföljande varven (n=2,3,m), introduceras ett skift (n-l) och (1-ïfi), vilket resulterar i ekvation (2): em =A -sin(2-fi-f -t)+A,-sin(2-1r-fl-t+(n-1)-2-/z-(1-ç1/1)+..... (2) där Aj - amplitud från spectra fj - frekvens motsvarande Aj t - tid Wj - fasförskjutning m - sampelnummer n - antal varv hos arbetsstycket.Then an energy matrix is derived in a step 415. This is performed in two sub-steps: First, equation (1) is derived for the first revolution of the workpiece (n = 1): em, =, 4-sn fl2- zvj'-Û- + A1- fi n (2-n-fl-b) +. N (1) For the second and subsequent turns (n = 2,3, m), a shift (nl) and (1-ï fi) are introduced, resulting in equation (2 ): em = A -sin (2- fi- f -t) + A, -sin (2-1r- fl- t + (n-1) -2- / z- (1-ç1 / 1) + .. ... (2) where Aj - amplitude from spectra fj - frequency corresponding to Aj t - time Wj - phase shift m - sample number n - number of revolutions of the workpiece.

The frequencies (1 to j) are preferably selected as the frequencies deviating from the noise level. In a preferred embodiment, the frequencies (1 to j) are obtained by using a suitable 516 954 1% 7 'filter. The energy can be calculated for each data position and adjusted against each set of data frames and number of revolutions made during this time interval. Then the energy matrix is derived by equation (3): 911 912 9111 921 922 931 932 (3) ml m2 mn The matrix E [m, n] now represents a number of turns of the workpiece (columns), and a resolution for a maximum wave frequency (rows ). By adding one revolution (by adding the columns), to the next, the most relevant radial cutting variation of the grinding zone is represented. Thus one is added to one and one is added to one, and so on.

Formation of a vector E by adding the columns in the matrix E will give an estimate of the roundness of the workpiece if this cutting shape has been the most dominant throughout the process.

Slutligen, i ett steg 417, uppskattas ett estimat av rundheten på arbetsstycket, baserat på energimatrisen enligt ekvation (3).Finally, in a step 417, an estimate of the roundness of the workpiece is estimated, based on the energy matrix according to equation (3).

This is preferably done by studying the vector E, as described in more detail below in connection with Figures 5 and 6.

Fig. 5 shows an example where this technique has been used. An appropriate radius of the polar diagram has been selected, based on the amplitude variation of the vector Én An appropriate radius can be derived by: radiuspomu fl o, = x * (Emax ~ Emax), to the extent qualitative 0 annu: uno: nun 0 n, 1 nunnan 0. c vaunoo c annan ». o, .aol ~. n, 1 un un u n: nu ncvu, n: nun. n »nonon u anno, a, 4 .roa 516 954 6 correlations for the state of the grinding zone are taken into account, where x is a constant selected by the user as the radius of the polar diagram.

Diagrammet i fig. The diagram in Fig. 5 thus constitutes an estimate of the shape of the workpiece, which can be used to determine the roundness of the workpiece instead of having to perform a special measurement at a separate location.

The estimate obtained in this way can be used as an input signal in a closed circuit in the control system and / or displayed to the operator to control the machine.

6.A new Fourier transform of E will give the number of lobes and their amplitudes relative to each other, where the result is seen in Fig. 6.

It should be noted that the information extracted from the acoustic emission system is an analogue RMS value.

The gain can be varied and thus also the amplitude of the variations sensed in the cutting zone. This gives a situation where the amplitude needs to be calibrated for each situation, while due to the varying degree of removal, the frequency content will be the same in the signal, regardless of the settings.

Thus, it is only convenient to make relative comparisons regarding amplitude.

Finally, the appendix shows a computer program written in Matlab where the algorithm is applied to calculate the roundness error from a number of frames of a digitized acoustic emission signal.

The method and apparatus described here achieve the benefits of realizing process variations in real time, making it possible to relate changes in settings, tools, etc. to the effective signal change.
