Abstract
Description
Object of the invention An object of the invention is to provide a method for computerized modeling and interactive visualization of the controlled or directed reflectance properties of a surface, which makes it possible to visually and interactively present a measured, modeled or simulated surface via a graphical computer interface. By interactively visualizing the surface via an interface, the three mentioned problems are taken into account. First, the computer-based interactive visualization means that the handling of the physical sample is reduced to a single measurement occasion, which can further be performed by skilled and experienced personnel, thereby minimizing the risk of destroying the physical sample. Second, the computer-based interactive visualization facilitates precise high-resolution control of the sample handling and is consequently a powerful tool because changes in the appearance of gloss can often be drastic even with limited changes in the illumination-sample-observer set. Third, the computer-based interactive visualization also guarantees that a pairwise comparison is performed under perfectly consistent inspection conditions, such as tilting or bending of the two surfaces. The overall control of the inspection permits is essential for a well-conducted paired evaluation, and is crucial if the areas to be evaluated are very similar.
Another object is to interactively manipulate the orientation and geometry of the sample surface by means of the computer interface via a similarly visualized virtual sample holder assigned a neutral gloss appearance. The visualized virtual sample holder is an aid for the observer to obtain information about the prevailing shape of the sample surface and consequently an aid for perceiving and evaluating several distinctive features of the visualized sample surface. By using an interactive visual interface in combination with the visualized virtual sample holder, a high degree of "presence" state is achieved for the evaluator. The term "presence" is often used in the field of virtual reality to describe the state of the object that forms part of the simulated reality, instead of being an observer of a simulated scene. An important component in terms of presence for the human eye is considered to be the sense of interaction experienced when a visual interface is manipulated.

The dynamic and interactive manipulation of the images in the graphical computer interface is preferably realized via manipulation, dynamically and interactively by a simulated sample holder for the irradiated surface.
The manipulation is preferably also selected from a group of operations of a virtual sample holder for the irradiated surface including tilting of the sample holder, translation of the sample surface over the sample holder, bending of the sample holder and topographic reshaping of the sample holder.
The model of the sample surface can optionally be obtained by recording directional reflectance data from an actual sample surface or obtained by simulating directional reflectance data from a virtual sample surface.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment In the virtual viewing situation shown in Fig. 1 to be modeled and simulated by the invention, a surface 12 of a sample 10 is illuminated by a light source 16 forming an A with the surface normal N. The illumination may be angled by a so-called standard lighting (standardized illuminant), ie. a lighting a well-defined energy distribution as a function of spectral wavelength and which meets a certain standard specification. The frequent use of fluorescent agents in, for example, printing paper may make it necessary to generalize this description to include incident radiation other than just the visible light. The distinguishing feature of fluorescent agents is the ability to convert electromagnetic radiation from smaller to larger wavelengths. The most common use of fluorescent agents for printing paper is to convert ultraviolet (invisible) radiation to (visible) light radiation and consequently achieve an increase in the perceived whiteness of the product.
The characterization that is necessary when using fluorescent agents is also directional radiation emitted from each sub-surface. The characterization can be done either directly as radiation values or relative to a reference surface (a perfect diffuser) as a radiation factor. The generalization from the directed area of reflection to the more general area of irradiation is well within the scope of the invention. For many applications, however, the directed reflectance characterization is sufficient, and since this term is more familiar, the term "directed reflectance" is often used in the descriptive text, bearing in mind the possibility of generalization to directional radiation and directional radii characteristics.
Reflekterat ljus från ljuskällan 16 betraktas från en variabel vinkel Zl mot yt normalen N samt avkänns och registreras av en betraktare 18.Reflected light from the light source 16 is viewed from a variable angle Z1 to the surface normal N and is sensed and registered by a viewer 18.
Läget för varje delyta på provytan 12 bestäms av dess respektive koordinater XI, YI.As indicated in the circular enlarged area in Fig. 1, in the preferred embodiment, the surface 12, for modeling purposes, is considered divided into a large number of sub-surfaces 14, each sub-surface being considered to exhibit uniformly directed reflectance properties over its area. The position of each sub-surface on the sample surface 12 is determined by its respective coordinates XI, YI.
In the preferred embodiment, the virtual surface 12 is modeled from an actual surface 12 of a sample by a recording apparatus 20 shown in Fig. 20. For a more detailed description of a similar apparatus limited to the use for recording only gloss, as a special case of the term directed reflectance, reference is made to applicant's U.S. Patent 6,147,750 which is hereby incorporated by reference.
In the recording apparatus 20, the surface 12 'is also irradiated by the electromagnetic source 16, while the viewer 18' is a sensor such as a spatially and spectrally resolving receiver.

The digital image information is a sub-area of an image related as "N1.tif" in "ISO 12640 Graphic technology- Prepress digital data exchange- Standard color image data (SCID); - Annex A, Standard color image digital data".
As can be seen from the above, according to an alternative of the preferred embodiment, a simulated surface such as the simulated surface 48 can also be modeled and organized in an information volume. The simulated surfaces can, for example, be assigned subjectively varying good and bad reflectance properties and presented as examples together with measured actual surfaces in an evaluation of print quality carried out by a group of persons using the invention.
A simulated surface can be modeled to more or less resemble a measured surface by systematically modifying the directed reflectance values in the information volume of the measured surface.

. a s a a o »- c f '_ _,. . a. . . . . a a c _ _ u. a -. u - ~ ß I _. _ ,,. g n q 1 O I 0 O 5 q a n n I s * 10 15 20 25 524 059 8 110071800 One conclusion based on the results of subjective evaluation of a set of physical samples was that the performance of the individual group members was very much due to previous experience in the field. All experienced members of the evaluation group gave highly correlated results, while the inexperienced members generally showed very low correlation to other group members. In order to test the possibility of using the invention as a tool and an aid for subjective evaluation, another test was recently carried out.
Based on the results of the previous subjective evaluation, only the experienced evaluators were selected to participate in the following subjective evaluation, where the samples were evaluated using a realization of the invention. Results and experience from the two subjective evaluations can be summarized as follows: the results based on the evaluation according to the invention were not only highly correlated with the results of the evaluation of the physical tests, but very interesting was also that the variation between the evaluators was also lower for the evaluation based on the invention. See Fig. 5 for a comparison between the ranked results of the evaluation of the samples that were first measured and then visualized and judged on a computer screen against the results of the evaluation of the same real (physical) samples.
Fig. 5 illustrates both the similarities in ranking results and the relatively lower degree of variation for the evaluation performed on the screen. The error bars show a 95% confidence interval. An important fact to emphasize is that the test series were considered a challenge to evaluate, because the differences between the tests were so small. This may be the reason why the inexperienced team members failed to show results in accordance with the experienced evaluators.
It is of high industrial value to have access to evaluation tools that help to reduce the variation in the results from the group members.
