Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for the production of a lignin oil, and the lignin oil obtained by the method. The method comprises liquefying a lignin material comprising at least 40 wt% lignin by thermal treatment at a temperature of from 100 °C to 240 °C in the presence of a base comprising potassium hydroxide, potassium methoxide, potassium ethoxide, potassium tert-butoxide or potassium hydride, and a non-aqueous fluid comprising ethanol to obtain a liquid comprising lignin oil, followed by addition of an acid to precipitate salts and then subjecting the lignin oil to a temperature of from 10 °C to 320 °C to obtain a demetallized lignin oil having a total metal content of less than 200 ppm.
