Abstract
1471171 Aromatic polymers RAYCHEM CORP 12 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 30988/74 Heading C3R Aromatic polymers comprise or consist of units of formula where the rings are phenylene rings, one having the linkages optionally in the meta or para position, x, m and n are each 0 or 1, p is 1 to 4, n is 0 when x is 1, m is 1 and x is 0 when p is greater than 1 and the polymer has an inherent viscosity of at least 0À4. The polymers are prepared by reacting appropriate nucleophilic reactants with electrophilic reactants in the presence of hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride. In examples the nucleophilic reactants are 1,4- diphenoxy - benzene, 4,41 - bisphenoxybenzophenone and 4-phenoxybiphenyl and the electrophilic reactants are terephthaloyl chloride, 4,41 - diphenylether di - acid chloride and isophthaloyl chloride. Other reactants are mentioned including ones which may be used to form co-polymers. Uses.-Films, fibres and electrical insulators.
