Abstract
1419665 Welding by pressure; jointing by tube expanding; dividing ULTRACENTBIFUGE NEDERLAND NV 13 Dec 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 57826/73 Headings B3J B3R and B3W In explosively welding a metal pipe 2 having a circular cross section in a cylindrical opening 4 in a metal body 1, the outer diameter of the pipe being smaller than the diameter of the opening, the pipe is positioned coaxially in the opening and in a circular opening 12 in a metal plate 11 detachably secured to the body, the plate opening 12 having a minimum diameter equal to the outer diameter of the pipe and a maximum diameter, adjacent the body, equal to the diameter of the opening 4 and the surface of the opening 12 between the maximum diameters being curved in crosssection and having a radius of curvature equal to or greater than the difference between the radius of the opening 4 and the radius of the pipe, an explosive charge 6, having a detonation velocity equal to the sonic velocity of the pipe metal, is positioned in the pipe and detonated so that the explosion commences in the portion of the charge within the opening 12 in the plate. In one embodiment the plate 11 is secured to a wall 1 by clamps, bolts or a holder and after detonation of the charge the pipe becomes welded into the bore but although the pipe is thrust against the aperture in the plate, the presence of oxides, &c. prevents welding thereto. The wider end of the aperture 12 in the plate has a radius of curvature 13 which may be at least equal to the width of the gap 3 between the pipe and the bore and at most equal to two and a half times the said width then upon detonation the portion of pipe 2 above the bore will be severed. If the radius of curvature is at least equal to four times the width of the gap shearing does not take place. A number of pipes may be welded simultaneously into a numbr of bores in a wall. A smaller pipe may be welded into the wall of a larger pipe, the upper plate being curved to fit the interior of the larger pipe and being supported by a block fixed in the larger pipe. One of the electrodes for the firing charge is in contact with a conductor in the block and the electric firing supply is connected to the pipe and to the conductor in the block.
