Abstract

The filter is manufactured from a continuous material web (14) which is folded in zigzag, one layer upon the other, e.g. by reciprocating movement of a trolley (3) on which the first layer (52) is held, the folds being formed by alternate use of press rolls (26, 37) as the trolley moves. During the folding of each layer, said layer is joined using welding, glueing or stitching heads (24, 35) to the layer below by parallel, lengthwise seams, the seams produced by heads (35) being halfway between those produced alternately by heads (24). The interconnected layers form, when the filter unit is extended in a direction at right angles to the layers, a filter unit comprising a plurality of tubes that are essentially square in cross-section. A plurality of such filter units may be mounted in parallel in an apparatus for filtering solid particles from a gas stream. <IMAGE>
