Abstract
A heat exchanger comprises a vessel containing a stack of parallel, spaced apart, perforated plates (e.g. 10) over which fluid flows generally perpendicular to the planes of the plates. The vessel wall may be formed by welding or brazing together adjacent plates around their periphery. Or the plates may be joined to the wall of a vessel (Fig. 9). Distribution and collecting means e.g. 68, 69, 70 are arranged at the ends of the stack. The stack may be enclosed in a shell (e.g. 60) which defines a passage for a second fluid. Stacks of annular, perforated plates may be arranged concentrically and the second fluid may be conducted through a central space and through spaces between the stacks (e.g. 14, 34, 44, Fig. 7). The spaces may contain electric heating elements (e.g. 35, Fig. 4). Alternatively one fluid may be conducted through an inner stack and the other fluid may be conducted through an outer stack concentric therewith (e.g. Fig. 5). <IMAGE>
