Abstract
An apparatus for measuring the volume of a liquid per unit time flowing through a tube comprises a tube member of diameter D, the axis of which is considered to lie along a z- axis of a right-handed coordinate system. The tube member is insulated at least in the interior thereof and a pair of electrodes E1, E2 is arranged diametrically (defining the x-axis) and connected to a voltmeter. A magnetic field substantially perpendicular to the x-z plane is provided whereby variations in the flow rate of fluid through the tube member cause corresponding variations in the measured voltage. The magnetic field is selected, e.g. by using two pairs of pole shoes or coils on respective sides of the electrode (x, y) plane, such that the y- component of the field descends from a saddle point (xs, ys, zs) in both directions parallel to the x-axis and rises in both directions parallel to the z-axis and descends after exceeding a maximum, where ¦xs¦<0.1 D, ¦ys¦<0.45D, and ¦zs¦<0.1D. The resulting measurement is thereby less dependent on the rotational flow state of the fluid. <IMAGE>
