Abstract

An ingot mould has at its head a recess 2 extending around the whole of the innerside and a cast iron (or steel) collar 5 supported in the recess, the collar having an inner surface aligned with that of the mould and an outer surface spaced from the recessed mould surface which space is filled with a thermally insulating material e.g. Kaowool. The head may last the life of the mould and the conventional heat insulating tiles consumed with every ingot are not employed. <IMAGE>
