Abstract

Method for marking and cross-cutting trunks after determination of dimensions, the butt end of the trunks preferably having been freed from rot damage and the like, if required, before the measurement, and the measured values having been stored in a computer for subsequent display and cross-cutting of the trunks into sawn timber and pulp wood, and each trunk being transferred to a longitudinal conveyor (9) after or in connection with the measurement. The method is characterised in that each trunk (11) is caused to assume with its butt end face a predetermined position on the conveyor (9), e.g. by guiding it against an end stop (13), in that the trunk is then lifted, upon a pulse from the computer or an operator by means of a lifting device (14), in a substantially vertical direction to a position significantly above the conveyor (9). A further characteristic is that the computer generates and sends out pulses with regard to suitable cutting points on the trunk (11), and the pulses actuate drive means (26) of cross-cutting apparatuses (23) displaceable, individually driven, along the conveyor and arranged in an appropriate number, so that said cross-cutting apparatuses are displaced to cross-cutting positions corresponding to said cutting points. Cross-cutting then takes place substantially simultaneously by means of the cross-cutting apparatuses (23), after which the trunk parts formed are lowered to the rest position on the conveyor (9) by means of said lifting device (14) and then carried away by the conveyor. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method. <IMAGE>
