Abstract

An individual refiner unit is described which is constructed and arranged in such a way that it has a single primary grinding face which interacts successively with each of a number of additional grinding faces, each of which thus forms a different stage of a breaking down or material grinding process. In a preferred embodiment, the first grinding face is located on the outer circumference of a rotating drum and the additional grinding faces are arranged at a distance around part of its circumference. In this embodiment, the feeding of the material to be ground and the outlet of the end product take place on the side of the drum located downstream in its direction of rotation. The unit according to the invention permits a new and improved breaking-down process which allows a multi-stage successive treatment of materials at a relatively low speed and in a printing pattern which tends to crush or break up thoroughly and completely wood and other materials to be treated so that they can be converted into their most advantageous form for use in end products.
