Abstract

The marine propeller is in the form of a slewing thruster mounted on the underside of a ship, floating dock or offshore drilling rig, for propulsion or manoeuvring. The unit is mounted in an opening (3) in the bottom (2) of the hull, through which it is coupled to driving machinery (25) and steering gear (20,22), the latter slewing it about a vertical axis. The thruster can be installed and removed as a complete assembly from the outside and underwater, and is enclosed inside the hull by a unit (18,19,22,26,28) which can be filled with compressed air during these operations, to prevent water penetrating into it and/or the hull.
